What happens if we lose two players to FA and don't pick anyone up? Do we get two compo picks or one upgraded one?
depends on who we lose (to determine contract etc) but we do get two picks
they determine that picking up a FA means you get suitable compensation

Edit: off the AFL website:

Compensation
A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:

1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

• 1st round
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result

Still think if we get kelly the AFL wont award us compensation unless we lost 3-4 players

Maybe drop the 2nd rounder from Freo and add a first from Carlton would be far closer.

SPS can’t get a game and Dow has had a decent month. Cerra is quality top 5 pick is his worth and that’s not even worth it for Freo because Cerra is proven to a degree

Yeah its Carlton..

Not that GC would do it but would you consider trading pick 1 & something (future 2nd,etc) for their pick 4 & Rankine? Not sure if he's still contracted but we could also take on the remainder of his contract if so. Get him in the right headspace & at a club with good culture & he's exactly what we're missing I reckon.

So if we did lose two to FA at moderate money and didn't pick anyone up we may have three picks in a row around 20. If Kelly costs too much in cap space, that's pretty good reward for passing on him.

I think we draft kpps as opposed to trading for, and again upgrade the second rounder somehow get one of those WA KPFs

I'd do that. Horne may be the next big thing but Rankine fills a need and we'd still get an elite kid.

I feel the same way. Happy to give Walker another contract as mature KPP depth and have Taz, McKay and Corr as our main KPD's, alongside Turner, Atu, Bonar, Hall and Ziebell in defence. Pick up a KPF, a KPD and a small forward on top of Horne, or someone like Callaghan if we don't finish last.

27, coming off a reco? Nah, corr can be our sicily

Two at moderate and picking kelly up by their logic would be only one towards end of second round... I cannot see them allowing a top 25 pick

another year on his contract, its always a big if but if the lions go out in straight sets then anything could be possible. Nobes obviously has history with him which for mine tips him over Weid.
Really not enthused by either, let’s draft on

[Edited: Thanks FG, hj]

So who are we delisting at the end of the year? This year seems harder than others, with most of the list being contracted, high-potential kids or still-performing veterans
I figure we need at least 4 main list spots free: 3 draft picks, 1 FA/trade in, plus we use one to upgrade Edwards.
As far as I can tell:

We currently have 44 players:
- 36 main list (out of 38 possible)
- 7 rookies
- 1 cat B rookie

I believe the following are OOC at the end of 2021.
Main list: Ziebell, Tarrant, J Walker, Dumont, Young, Tyson, Atley, Garner, Atu, Bonar
Rookies: Menedue, Hayden, McGuiness, P. Walker, W. Walker, Campbell, Ham, Edwards

I can see us cutting Atley and Garner from the main list and four rookies: W. Walker, Hayden, Menedue, McGuiness.
We upgrade Edwards and Ham as a Rookie. Campbell can't stay as a rookie so we will probably lose him as a backup.
That leaves us with four free spots. Is that enough? What do we do if we want more?
- Delist Young?
- Delist J. Walker?
- Not upgrade Edwards?
- Lose Dumont and not get compo because we get Kelly as our FA?
- Not take an FA?
- Something else? (trade out Xerri...? Delist Tarrant!?)

That leaves us with three free spots. We still need space for any FAs or speculative draft picks. So what do we do?

Bonar just re-signed, Atu is 2023.

Campbell can't be retained as a rookie so I can't foresee him going on unfortunately.

I think we’ll go 38 and 4 next year (instead of our current 36 senior list and more rookies) so delist 3 rookies and already opens up 2 senior list spots available

those 3 rookies gone would be:
Campbell is gone had his max 3 years on the rookie list
Will walker
1 of Hayden/menadue

From the senior list
then probably let Atley go and try trade Polec, Tyson gone too. Gives us 5 senior list spots (3 draft picks and 2players brought in)

Think tyson garner w.walker and hayden will be the first 4 gone. Menadue aswell. Then Dumont will leave atley probably gone aswell so that's easy 7 players done already. Campbell as stated if we don't want to offer him a senior gig then 8 and possibly polec traded makes 9. Fair bit of space

Can't believe I forgot Tyson, he was first on my mind. I've edited the original.
But W. Walker, Hayden, Menadue and Campbell are rookies so don't free up spots. If Dumont or Polec leave we will get draft picks in exchange so they don't free anything. I think we might delist Tyson, Atley, Garner... and then?

Refer to my post getting rid of extra rookies will free up senior list space as we can go from 36 and 7 rookies to 38 and 4

It would have to be Pick 1 for Pick 5, 19, 2022 R1 + Rankine to even answer the phone call.
