Surely Dunstan isn't best 22 at Melbourne given their stacked midfield. How is he going to handle being disrespected again?

I reckon he will be up against it if he does go there. I think they must be a fall back option if nothing else comes up unless they are worried that they need injury cover while they have a chance at another flag. They would be lucky to have the same type of run with injury again.

Will be stoked if Dunstan signs with Melbourne.
Not the silliest idea given outside of their starting 22 they dont really have any inside mids. Although their best 22 does have 6-7 inside mids
I expect it will be only a year on not much so we will be lucky to get any compo sadly
Fingers crossed for a end of 3rd round, otherwise it wont equate to any points to pay for the NGA's

Biggest problem is that he’s sh*t though isn’t he?

Mason Cox had a Rhys Stanley feel for me. Both were persistently played as forwards and didn’t set the world on fire. Like Rhys though I think Mason could become quite a serviceable centre bounce ruck and we can send Marshall forward if we need to.

I come in peace. I just heard that we were/are into Luke Dunstan. What's he like? Strengths? Weaknesses? Why is he called "Spook"?
Lukey Dunstan is a divisive figure here. Most definitely not a lazy player by any measure, he's one you can rely on to crack in every week and get a respectable number of touches and some clearances. His kicking can range from okay to atrocious but I think with the right system he can thrive. There were times with us in the purple patch he had mid season where he didn't really change the kicks he went for but the same 'bang it on the boot ASAP into the forward 50' kicks started working out because our setup was expecting them.

He's not a slow decision maker he's just a poor one sometimes so if your forward line is capable of thinking on their feet and able to play that Richmond style chaos ball he'll be fine.

He can tackle well and put pressure on opposition midfielders which he did in his best games this year, running with a player then beating them in numbers a bit like Jack Steele from his tagging days lite.

Not a fast player off the mark or even at full acceleration but if you don't have him doing the outside stuff you should be fine. If you got a much less talented and classy version of the way Libba at the dogs plays it'd be Luke Dunstan. Does the hard grunt work and lets the stars do their thing. Pushed out at the Saints because we don't have any star mids other than Jack Steele and old man Hanners. Brad Crouch our most recent midfield recruit has been good for us but he's not a star that can be let off the chain either, he was brought in to do what Dunstan does but at a higher level. A few of our younger players fill the same role too, not quite at the same output yet but with scope to improve Dunstan was just found to be unlucky in his position and the composition of the list.

Good character to have as a clubman though. Well liked among the players and did a bunch of work assistant coaching our AFLW team in the midfield. Hope he lands on his feet if you guys get him.

I reckon his late season form was as good or better than Crouch. His disposal and his tank seem much better, the two things that made him hard to watch early on. I think if he hadn't done his pec and played like he did this year we wouldn't have chased Crouch. You can't really carry two of those types when you already have a thin midfield with little variation. Hard to see him pushing Viney or Oliver out so you imagine he's playing at Casey.
Dunstan's formed dropped back again once Jones returned to the side. Crouch started spending more time at half forward since that point while Dunstan was starting primarily in the middle, and their numbers are very similar.

I doubt his peck injury changed much. He had already been dropped from the side after kicking it at 30% in rd1, so he was already on the fringes of our side. He would have had to have a huge turn around for us to not go after a better midfielder considering we had already forecast thats what we were after.

Viney he's in direct competition with for spots but I think Oliver has the ability to deal some real damage if he's not soley responsible for clearance duty.

Melbourne lose Nathan Jones, gain Luke Dunstan. Not near their best 22, but the opportunity may arise for him. And for Melbourne he's reasonable cover for Oliver, Brayshaw or Viney if one goes down.

But he had heart, which is more than can be said about some of our other players. He did care when the team lost.
I’m fine with him leaving, but some of the stuff said about him is a bit much. We’ve seen him nearly in tears after losses, contrast that to the chosen one in Brad Hill who’s all smiles looking for a laugh with the opposition.
Yes we should only keep players who cry and dump the ones who are top 5 in the B&F.
If he cared so much for the team why would he not follow team rules and refuse to play anywhere but midfield? All about him in my opinion.

And you wonder why from one year to next why Richmond, the Bulldogs and Melbourne are able to win Grand Finals and we are not. Can you imagine any of those teams, regardless of positional need, taking a player like Xerri. Seriously????

And the fact that the bottom team seems to have no problems letting him go seems to speak volumes. If he was so 'dominant' why is a team struggling to climb the ladder not wanting to hold on to him, even as a backup?

I wish the supporters of this club held the people responsible for list management up to the same standards as the players.
Old cheap stopgaps make sense to me since they're very obviously disposable but cheap young stopgaps tend to stress me out a little. Once they're on the list the team has to give them a fair crack and look at them with the hope of developing them. Not often you trade in a young player and not want to immediately play with the shiny new toy. It's also hard for them to be let go and they hang around too long since there's always that allure of "they could be anything", taking up one of the young development spots on the list . Very easy to just write off someone like Paul Hunter as "we gave it a go time to go" vs a 22 year old ruck depth that we might look at as "give a couple years more just in case/could possibly be part of our future"

He's a back up ruckman Ray.

3rd in line.

All of those clubs have recruited similar break glass in emergency types to back up their main guys.

Calm the hysterics.

Played below what he is capable of for years with his biggest flaws being his tank and kicking. Would have booted his arse out the team at the start of the year, no dramas. As it turned out, he put his head down and got stuck into improving himself and was a good reason why the club turned its fortunes around in the second half of the season. His kicking THIS year was fine, his tank is now standard, he can bully other mids, break tackles, rack up getting the ball etc

I believe him fully when he says Ratten didn't want him but in saying that, this was an opinion formed before this season and i rate our coach as stubborn with little insight to change his mind when wrong. To prove this point, one only has to look at Carlisle and Hill.

I was in no doubt he would be picked up but admit i am finding it to amusing he is likely going to Melbourne. If he works his arse off and wants it he will be in your best 22 at some point. It's up to him.

Remember when we were the laughing stock of the league for getting a rookie called Marshall when we had two gun rucks in Longer and Hickey?

That's an insane highlights reel. There aren't many of these around so he really stands out. He looks like he could be a star type but pretty sure he's going to GC or GWS. There are going to be more and more of these South Sudanese kids coming into footy. My son played a against a few who looked like stars in the making as well. Their size and athleticism are insane.
I played last season with a guy. Unbelievable. Nice kick, lightning quick seemingly effortless and great in the air. Doing match sim, your standing next to him and then its like whoosh he's about 20 meters away

Surely you're taking the piss with this post? He's a backup ruckman.

He's a pretty similar quality player to Nate Jones who I doubt would have stopped you winning a flag had he played.

I reckon he's only cover if you lose an inside mid but he's better than you'd expect.

Sorry, meant more if he is getting a game I reckon Oliver or Petracca are out hurt. I think he is a decent player and I am surprised no club was willing to offer a decent deal to him as surely there are midfields out there who could use him.

You mean like when Richmond took a relatively unknown ruckman called nankervis because he was in the 2s ar Sydney. Melbourne grabbed Daw last year as depth....

He will be depth, pure and simple I feel

But if the young ones come good then you've got a quality ruckman for the next 5-10 years.

it is true but when looking to find a decade type key position player I'd rather be filling them with quality from the draft rather than cheap stopgap types. There can be sunk cost fallacy with young players and then the club doesn't find it worth still looking for an improvement in that area anymore. Once you invest enough into a position it becomes a bit hard to justify anymore.

Why do teams have to give younger back ups a fair crack? If his performances demand it & there's an opportunity, he'll get it.
