Going so tall does seem like a significant change in recruiting priorities.

Could it be because there is in fact a succession plan in place and as a result Carr was the one giving directives to the recruiters on player types we need?

Or is that just wishful thinking?

I was thinking the same thing. Let's just have a little hope and roll with it

He was state combine. He will probably go in the rookie draft as there's not much left in tall defender land. There really aren't many surprises in the draft. National combine players got selected pretty much in order. Players who aren't athletic get massively downgraded.

Would prefer to Rookie him over Williams. Williams is such a waste pick

What the club says:

"Given we traded in guys like Junior Rioli and Jason Horne-Francis who will help impact straight away, we really targeted young talls in the draft who might take some time to develop. Tom McCallum might only be 192cm but he's got great speed and agility. He's shown all season he can play on the tall forwards and we just thought with the profile of some of the tall, lean key forwards currently in the competition, that he’ll develop into someone who can play on those types because of his athletic ability." - national recruiting manager Geoff Parker

We have history picking lots of talls when we don't have high picks. Frampton, Howard, Austin and Palmer were all taken in one draft from like pick 55 onwards.

Its strategic and it makes sense, especially when there were heaps of (local) talls.

It would've been easy for the club to draft some ready made, half cocked tall defender (Phillips) to throw in next season and bandaid the problem. Would've helped donuts probably get another year. This year's draft approach is more holistic and long term though which appears to be geared for a post Hinkley era.

I didn’t see him, from what I did see we looked very light on. That does look like the great man’s head though.
I thought we were light on as well but we actually had 8 in the room. What stuck out to me was the lack of Ken, as most teams had their senior coach there.

Im not surprised we went for all tall players - it's an area we lack, this draft was always seen as great for KPPs, and none of the father-sons linked to use in coming years are regarded as key position players.

I am not sure what many of the people sitting around the tables actually do. They seem to sit there staring at each other waiting for the 5 minutes to tick down. As boring as it is it still beats listening to the inane banter from that FOXTEL panel. Those people just talk for the sake of it. I am not sure what relevance Tiger Woods has to the AFL.

Rather than hit fans with small talk FOXTEL would be better placed having some of the player highlight reels at hand so that supporters could see the selected players in action. Credit to the PAFC as the Club were pretty quick to get the incoming player profiles up on the website along with highlight reels. If the PAFC can do it why can't FOXTEL?

I imagine there's a bit of waiting to see if any pick swap offers come through, and there would be extras in the room as observers, social media people, etc. on top of the 5 or so recruiting staff who finally get their moment in the spotlight. I'd assume there would be more discussion while other clubs are picking players, especially if the players they want start disappearing off the board.

I'm not going to lie would have preferred Lemmey or a number of others with our first pick.
Having said that will back our team and Tommy in .
Our next 2 picks were brilliant picking needs for the future is what I wanted.

I don't follow the draft so have no idea aside from what I'm reading but I sense we've had a real 'athlete first, footballer second' type draft here.

I guess with only late picks that might not be the worst strategy. Pick some good athletes and hope we can develop 1 or 2 of them into decent players.

The McCallum pick in isolation felt a bit weak. With all the pieces in place now it looks better however. Looks to have some real upside and tools.

One concern I have is fitting in all these talls and giving them reasonable opportunity to develop. Other concern is not having an msd pick as it stands.
