St Kilda Round 1 - who will likely have M King and Marshall/Ryder with Membrey up forward. Don't think Madgen will cut the mustard on the big boys. Moore will take one of the 200cm types, and Howe for Membrey but we will need another taller defender to take the other big (Dean/Kelly/Kreuger)

I'm thinking kreuger might play defence first round
B - Maynard Kreuger Quaynor
HB - Howe Moore Pendlebury
C - J Daicos Degoey Crisp
HF - Sidebottom Mihochek N Daicos
F - Elliott Cameron Henry

Would be keen to hear more of Daicos picks out Daicos in the commentary, can we swap Nick and Sidey, otherwise looks a possible starting line up.

forward line seems to be the hardest to fill for best 22. Still not sold on our capacity to score, it’s arguably weaker than our midfield. Guaranteed spots are checkers and Elliot, and I’d lock Henry in to. How cox, Cameron and kreuger fit in have to wait and see. I don’t see any of them being able to kick 40+ which is a major issue, though Cameron being Ruck relief needs a goal a game. We are still very much lacking in scoring power. And checkers and Elliot aren’t getting any younger. Hopefully we get more forward entries, it’s the personnel up forward that concern me

Krueger hasn't been training down back, so I doubt he'll line up there.
He's also not much more experienced than Dean, and only 1cm taller (196 to 195).

Will be interesting to see where Krueger lines up in the practice matches. We may potentially see a Krueger (FWD) vs Dean (DEF) matchup.

Maynard. Dean. Quaynor.
Howe. Moore. Pendlebury

J.Daicos. Adams. Sidebottom

Henry. Mihochek. Ginnivan
Elliott. Cox. JDG

Grundy. Lipinski. Crisp

N.Daicos. McCreery. Macrae. WHE
Sub: Noble/Bianco

Preferrably a tall would be nice on the bench.. for WHE? But doubt they would not include him tbh.

Lets see after the intra club on Friday.

I was at the traffic light today, waiting to cross.
I saw Scott Pendlebury on a bike.
Very friendly.
I wished him the best for season 2022.
I said I had waited so long for success, thought I would never see another premiership.
He is one of the greatest players of the modern era.

Maynard. Dean. Quaynor.
Howe. Moore. Pendlebury

Sub: Noble/Bianco

Would have to be very close. Can't argue with this team.

This would explain Grundy practicing more up forward, really needs to stick more marks for resting him fwd to work (prefer Cameron to Cox as Fwd/Ruck)
Another big fwd would cost one of McCreery or Ginnivan ( I think Henry's a lock )
Lipinski at centre with Adams in and under on ball
WHE is interesting, pretty good on the wing and fwd. can play defence in a pinch, plenty of experience.
Reckon he's the perfect Sub if we can replace him on the wing (Josh on one side Nick on the other)

Have Cameron and Noble been playing with the seniors in match sim?

And how is Noble going in general. I'm hoping he surprises a few in a game plan with more run and gun.

A fan of the idea of WHE as sub given his tendency to go missing in a 4qtr game, ability to play multiple roles and the pace he would bring if brought on later in a game

That and I don’t see him at 28 as long term... I think youth surpasses him either on the wing or up front. There are better, longer term options in those positions

I think there is a lot of pressure on him this year. I suspect we'll play mids/runners on the wings and unless he can re-invent himself, he'll be competing with Henry for a crowded medium forward spot. Considering Elliott is one of the best in the league in the role and so is JDG when he plays up forward, there might not be a spot for either him or Henry, if we opt for an extra tall and/or an extra small up forward, which you'd have to think is likely.

Off and on. This past week, Noble was in the black. Sometimes white. Friday might give more of a sense.
Cameron similar. Off/on. Feels like he is being used as more of a ruck

IMO He has been performing pretty well. Have been using him off the wing and HB. Today, in the middle because we had no jordy, Lippa.

The thin list of experienced players we have is starkly outlined by the consequences of the Roughead injury. All the players suggested for his spot have almost no experience in the job. Just like last year, we have quite a strong first rank, but there is nothing behind it. Once a first choice player is down, we will be living in hope that an untried replacement will step up. History says that only a few will do so, so our season is terribly dependent on freedom from serious injury.

For me, Dean is the best choice first up, but it is a Hail Mary, and I am only going on the training reports. I am sure that the club did not want to have to make that choice.

This is true. The unfortunate comsequence of not having a back up key defender.

ROUND 1 team

B: Maynard, Dean, Howe
HB: Pendlebury, Moore, Quaynor
C: Crisp, Lipinski, J.Daicos
HF: Elliott, Mihocek, Henry
F: Ginnivan, Cox, Sidebottom
FOLL: Grundy, De Goey, Adams
Int: N.Daicos, Macrae, Hoskin-Elliott, Cameron/Kelly

Emerg: Poulter (sub), Cameron/Kelly, Noble/Bianco

Unavailable: Roughead

Next in line: Noble/Bianco, McInnes, Ruscoe, McCreery, Chugg, Krueger, T.Brown, C.Brown
Developing/Depth: McMahon, Johnson, Begg, Murphy, Draper, Murley, Harrison, Wilson, Madgen

*Wouldn't surprise me if Ruscoe is selected, to assist Dean. Otherwise we may be content with Howe playing the third man up.
*Cox seems preferred at training for FF, and if his eyesight is no longer an issue, he may become Fly's first choice.
*Cameron/Kelly to play as the third tall, who it is may depend on form and team focus. Having Cameron allows more ruck options vs Ryder/Marshall, but Kelly offers more protection in defence.
*Really want Bianco in the team, but I think Noble may offer more defensively at this stage, either way neither in the 22 at this stage.
*Reef to begin with a couple of games in the twos. Surely not too long until he's knocking on the door.
*McCreery unlucky but I prefer Gini at this stage.

FEBRUARY PREDICTION
If we are lucky with injuries, I can't see this team winning the wooden spoon as so many people have predicted (BF main page thread).
There's plenty of top line quality in the side, plus no distractions this year (I doubt the JDG case has any impact).

We play Gold Coast, Adelaide, Carlton, Essendon, and Melbourne twice. Surely we get at least 4-5 wins there.

First nine games: STK (A), ADEL (H), GEEL (H), WCE (H), BRIS (A), ESS (ANZAC), GC (H), RICH (A), WB (H)
We should be looking at wins over STK, ADEL, WCE, and GC here.
After round nine we should be gunning for 5+ wins.

Expected wins: 8-10
Expected finish: 10th-14th

Looks really good. I particularly like Pendles back, Sidey forward and Crisp in the midfield.

I’ll be surprised if Noble doesn’t play Rd1 but not sure who he replaces in your line-up. Perhaps WHE?

The team you’ve named will play an attractive style of footy. There will be some heavy defeats but we’ll see lots of progress and reasons for optimism.

I certainly hope we play an attractive style of footy this year, for sure!

WHE is in this side over Noble due to his ability to hit the scoreboard and also play up the wing.
Noble's spot is pretty much taken in my team by the Pendles/N.Daicos tandem.

WHE had a super 2018, but missed the start of 2019 due to knee swelling and surgery he had on a tendon in his leg. This created issues further with his knee, and once he eventually got back, he was slow to return to form.
In 2020 his form tapered off. Was he another player affected by the condensed rounds, and playing away from home?
2021 saw a return to form, getting over 300 touches for the first time since 2018, and equalling his 48 tackles of that year.

Despite Champion Data rating WHE as 'above average' for the wing (link), which is the top 35% for the AFL in the position, I'd like to see him pushed further into the forward line.
He can be dangerous playing deep at times, and other times running hard into space. He did that so well during 2018, when he kicked 42 goals. Here's some highlights - he also took some great grabs in our 50!

WHE is exactly the kind of player that could excel under a new coach. He's 28 and in his prime, and like all older players, is being pushed by our youth. As a former pick #4, he would know the pressure to perform early.

Out of all the experienced players on our list, I'm most looking forward to seeing how Will's 2022 shapes up.
I'm most interested in where he will spend most of his time. I'm hoping up forward again, releasing JDG into the midfield, and allowing J.Daicos, Poulter, and Crisp more wing time.

I should post this on the WHE page!

A passionate and well substantiated defence of Hoskin-Elliott! I quite like him too - that 2018 season where he goaled nearly every week and barely missed a set-shot was outstanding. Has mostly been brief cameos since then, unfortunately. Hopefully a new coaching regime and injection of youth brings out his best.

my impression of our best 22:

B - Howe Roughead Dean Maynard
HB - Quaynor Moore Pendlebury
C - J.Daicos Crisp Sidebottom
HF - Henry Mihocek De Goey
F - Ginnivan Cox Elliott
Foll - Grundy Lipinski Adams
I/C - N.Daicos WHE McCreery ???

Cameron plays over Cox.

ROUND 1 (based on Intra)
Noble Dean IQ
Howe Moore Pendlebury
Daicos Maynard Crisp
Sidebottom Mihocek DeGoey
Elliott Cox Henry
Grundy Lipinski Adams
N. Daicos, Ruscoe, WHE, Ginnivan

I'd love to see more of Maynard in the middle. I feel he could ease the bullocking burden on Adams and really open us up on the spread.

Leppa's press conference was interesting. I wonder if we're quick enough over the ground for a territory-based gameplan.
