The article was a puff piece that didn't really say anything other than they wanted to play a blend of mids with different strengths and rotate more players through there. If they are seriously going to play a bigger rotation - Pendles is the most likely to see significantly reduced stoppage time from previous years, due to the stage of his career and Daicos and Lipinski likely to be viewed as offering similar stoppage strengths, I think the article also suggested Maynard and Crisp also for the same spot within the midfield- and also because Jen is saying that he's not seeing much stoppage action throughout preseason. We'll find out soon, but Im expecting that Pendles will start the season mainly not in the centre square. Injuries, form etc are pretty likely to see things change though
Agree its a puff piece but if we are taking other things from it then what it says about pendles should be also considered

I think the main thing however to take Pendles largely out of the midfield after he has been its main pillar for so long seems drastic. ND and Lippa and no and very little CS experience at AFL level respectively so I would expect them to be secondary players for 22 until they show they can handle the role. Cant see them being considered Pendles stoppage equals at this point.

I think the same with taking Elliott out of the forward line and giving him serious midfield time - I'm hoping that isn't going to happen. At his age adn stage of his career, body - when he's such a good forward, why are they re-tooling him for a different role where he's never shown that much.

With Pendles, new coaches often try to play a bit of funny buggers. I wouldn't be surprised if Pendles starts out of the square and then moves into a more midfield role after the stoppage, with Maynard or Crisp doing a reverse Dusty.

Good call. I would have De G and Adams as the 2 stalwarts of the centre sq. Elliott for cameos. I think its fair not to overburden Lippa with expectation. 6th year player who hasn't been able to cement a spot in the 22 at a previous club. Big ask to be a centre sq mainstay. Let him settle in the 22, not expect him to be a top man from the start. If he becomes one quickly all the better.

I read the article but it’s just not the evidence I’m seeing at training. Can’t tell you that last time pendles attended a centre bounce more than a handful of times over the last few months

Would that be because it is more likely to be Adams, Lipinski and De Goey/Elliott in the square?

Thats my view. Pendles/Crisp/Maynard will rotate.

Looks like Nick is playing midfield with a bit at HB and some forward tomorrow, he confirmed on the clubs tik tok.

The way I see it, midfield has three different roles - centre square stoppage, around the ground stoppage and general play linking/defence.

I differentiate between centre square stoppage and other stoppages due to the more and lesser space, so Elliott may be effective at a centre square stoppage where he is more likely to be able to burst into space, whereas around the ground stoppage is more about clean distribution to try to find someone already in space. Pendles on the other hand is still one of the best linking mids in the league, who is still very good at around the ground stoppages, due to needing less time and space. When they're talking about playing blokes through the midfield, it's difficult to know whether they're talking about all of the midfield roles or just centre square. We might see more players play the way Dusty has the last few years - centre bounce then moving forward for the majority, and thus someone like Pendles may see less centre bounces, but still play as a midfielder for the most part. Daicos the same at this stage of his career. I still think coaches are working out how best to exploit and defend the extra space of the recent rule changes regarding centre bounces - Dees may have worked it out and have the cattle to exploit it - cattle who are rarities who play all the mid roles well - other teams might have to compete with more switching of players.

Hmm..

Not missing anyone from that line up?

I'm already liking the competitiveness for spots, especially amongst the younger players. Would love to have Ginnivan, Henry and Beau all in the team Round 1 but at least one of them will have to play their way in through the 2's.

hmmm i wonder why, when he first joined as coach he did sort of roast Macrae and Henry for their tackling efforts
If I was on match committee Henry would be in my 22 for sure. Maybe they think with Cox, Michocek, Kreuger, they need an extra genuine small. But even that doesn't explain Henry missing out if it comes down to him vs WHE.

Good side but I'd have McCreery in place of Ruscoe.

I've updated my predicted team to this. I am confident in 21 of the 22 just not sure Henry will be picked. Will be one of Henry, Macrae, Bianco, Poulter, T.Brown, Ruscoe, Noble.

Pies by 63 now based on yesterdays game
