Steven May never showed his current level at the Suns, was either injured or suspended most weeks.
That’s more of a ‘discipline’ thing than a ‘work ethic’ thing, you could always see he had the talent and he made it work at AFL level whenever he played. They made him captain for a reason

They go hand in hand, you asked if anyone coasted and went onto bigger and better things, Steven May absolutely has. When he first signed at Melbourne he was labelled as unfit, overweight etc, funny how he pulled his finger out.

He wasn’t close to a fringe AFL player putting up wildly inconsistent performances, though. He obviously belonged in the league, he’d shown his talent for a good 8 years and 123 games. Melb wouldn’t have paid pick 6 for him otherwise

Can anyone actually think of any high-talent players who, in recent times, coasted at their first club for a good four years without putting up consistent AFL performance, then actually went to another level at their second club?

I’m struggling
Gary Ablett... but 35 years ago!

More recently Charlie Cameron

Yes but apparently we have money in the bank for recruits. So...a rookie payment wouldn't break the cap. If anything it was to get Gibbs AFL benefits. Its ok to be a family club etc and endeavour to look after our ex players but damn. Aren't we chasing opportunities to access genuine talent for a rebuild.

We had to keep him on the list because we couldn’t fit his final year $600k into the 2021 cap. But we certainly didn’t need to use our first rookie pick on him, it’s not like anyone wanted him.

It wasn't about a rookie payment, which I agree would have been trivial.

It was the last year of the contract we agreed to, when we brought him over from Carlton. It was a hell of a lot more money than a basic rookie contract. I can't remember how much was involved, but $600K is probably a reasonable guesstimate.

The AFC couldn't afford to pay him out and stay under the salary cap, so they delisted him and drafted him in the rookie draft, before placing him on the inactive list.

They then signed Nick Murray as his replacement.

Don't be fooled into thinking that sentimentality had any bearing on the decisions made. It was all about the salary cap, and we were able to take another player to replace Gibbs anyway.

Mutineer I couldn’t find the appropriate thread but here is as good as any I suppose.

Kim Kantilla played a blinder debut for South Adelaide against Crows. Any knowledge about him?

I saw a few Crows players reach for their phones to find out who this lad was after he mesmerised everyone with some astonishing moves. Lightening quick. Fabulous skills.

Know of him? Heard any talk about him?

He's related to David Kantilla, who is a South Adelaide and NTFL legend.

I don't know if it still exists, but there used to be a restaurant at Marrara Stadium (now TIO), called "Kantilla's".

I'm fairly sure he was the first Aboriginal player to come down from the NT, and make it in the big leagues - a forerunner to players like Michael Long and the Riolis.

I'm old enough to have watched David Kantilla play in the sixties. I was very young but still have vivid recollection. Was my favourite player of the time. Such a tragic loss when he died so young. An older friend of mine, ex SANFL sixties footballer, was given the job of minding the resting ruckman in the forward line back then, said he was impossible to beat, and a ripper bloke.

Would you Dylan Shiel? He'll be 30 by start of next season, so could prise him away from Bombers for a later pick and them picking up some of his salary. Not a solution to the long term project, but would help make the team viable in the next 2 seasons and the development of those around him.

Nope. We have Laird and Keays to run the midfield, and if not there, he's just going to get in the way of kids who are trying to find their way.

Peak Dylan Shiel I would, but sadly he's been pretty ineffective the last two years.

Only if Essendon paid us in draft picks to take him and we traded out Matt Crouch and Sloane retires

If I were to look at anyone from the Bombers it’d be Andy McGrath. Shiel would just be wasting a list spot

Speaking of the Bombers, hopefully this isn’t the year we finally go down the Aaron Francis path

Is he eligible? He would need to have nominated for the 2021 ND.
To be automatically eligible he would need to have nominated for the most recent AFL draft or previously been on an AFL list - I assume that he satisfies neither. Hence he would need to apply for an exemption, which you’d hope would be a formality.

He looked impressive against the SANFL Crows, but it’s only one game. I think he’s 22yo and is listed as a handy 190cm/84kg. If he plays well in the next 1-2 SANFL games and is willing to nominate for the MSD, then I’d be tempted. I suspect he is well short of AFL fitness and would need 18 months.

Likewise South’s 19yo small forward recruit Jye Menzie from Tassie, who kicked 6 against Port and has 13 to date (=4th with TT and others). However we have too many 2nd tier small forwards and too many Tasmanians.

Lots of Kantillas running around St Mary's and Tiwi Bombers over the years.

Loved his pace on the weekend.

Hopefully we'll have another Tasmanian drafted this year too...Lachlan Cowan would be nice get.
