Won’t Naughton be a free agent soon? I think that’s how we get him as a replacement for tabs.

Naughton still has 3 more season until he’s an RFA.

If he goes to WA I’d be amazed if it wasn’t the Eagles. There’s a bit of negative history with Freo dating back to his last season at Peel and the draft.

You've got a bigger problem with Collingwood for Naughton than either WA club.

Peter Wright? Out of contract end of 2023. He’s 26. Won’t need to wait to develop.

Throw the absolute book at him? Bombers a bit all over the place.

Would give us 5 years whilst in window. Amiss will continue to develop. Taberner will likely be on last legs over next 2 years.

He’s my biggest target.
Not sure he’s realistic option.
For one he’s been on massive money his entire career due to GC list management and would cost a bomb in salary to come to Perth.

Secondly - teams like freo don’t normally get B&F winners from powerhouse Melbourne clubs that grew up in Victoria to come west. Would be highly unusual.

Finally, I’m not actually sure he’s good enough to sell the farm for. Certainly improved this year but he’s a level or two below your Naughton/Mckay types.

If I understood how Essendon handled their voting system for their B&F correctly - every player gets a vote out of five (from potentially all the coaches) based on how they played their role, so players who play all season will poll highly since you're going to get votes for walking on the grass.

I agree that he is unlikely to come back to WA but he doesn't have a beef with Freo (other than us beating you guys in the finals). He has long since moved on from the Peel thing - none of the people at Freo/Peel are still around so why would he? If he is coming back to WA in the coming couple of years I'd say Freo would have a much bigger chance of attracting him than WC.

Haven’t heard anything about Collingwood since he said he’d rather be drafted by them than Freo. But I’m sure they like every other club would be keen.

There isn't a plan for the Pies to pinch him from the Dogs but when the time comes to consider options they will have a weighting added to their option for deep emotional reasons - like Luke Jackson did with Freo

No, as we just saw with Jackson, it's hard enough getting these guys out of contract, in contract is impossible essentially.

Needs to be a quieter trade year next year before hopefully bring in Naughton or McDonald the year after
I'd be spectacularly surprised if either left their respective clubs let alone to come to Freo. To the point of calling it complete and utter wishful thinking

We don't need to use a first round pick until 2025 where we will need to take two. It's not ideal for talent, but drafting Amiss and Erasmus in 2021 means we meet the two picks in four years requirement all the way through 21, 22, 23 and 24.

So we will be able to trade our future first end of next season if required.
Probably not too far away from extending what clubs can use in trades as well.

I suspect clubs leveraging "but we've only got this much to use" might trigger the AFL to adjust the rules next off season.

Agree to disagree

It's all well and good to want to poach Naughton or whoever. But how are we going to pay them? We need to be working a brown paper bag scheme like Carlton and Geelong, but I don't know if we have that in operation.

Think of how much Brayshaw, Serong, Young, Jackson, Cox, Darcy should be getting paid. Some of them need new contracts over the next few years. There's other ones who won't be on peanuts. The salary from Fyfe and Walters can be redistributed, but I don't know if that is enough to get a Naughton.

Again, people said the same thing about Jackson. I dont really understand why people think it's no chance to be honest, it's weird. We've been as active bringing players in the last 10 years as basically any club in the AFL. There is a range between "they are lock" and "wishful thinking / pipe dream" and we'll be as attractive a destination to play footy for over the next 6 years as any club.

I think we need to balance our list with superstars and handy players in right ratio
If it is all superstars, we can't afford.
With every contract extension, we should keep that balance in mind like what will happen to our list in 2 years.
If we balance it for the next 10 years.. chance for flag will increase.

Only after the draft they were saying that about Jackson. Literally ever since we asked last season when Cerra was being traded it was considered a chance.

Between Naughton's history with us and Logan ending up at Sydney and being groomed as the Buddy replacement literally neither of those 2 are the types to leave.

This explains some of my extreme reticence to overpay, like we did, for Jackson as it leaves us without the tools to either draft for our need, forcing us to chase those speculative offers. As for being one of the more attractive places to play footy at? You might have a point with Naughton at the Bulldogs but Sydney has the best of big game and crowd experience with tremendous support in Melbourne as well as getting to live in relative anonymity in a Rugby League town. I'd argue very few places are as attractive to play at as Sydney.

Well definitely minimal chance, but so is every that's been thrown up. Clearly Naughton would be a great get, but is he a realistic chance??

That's so fetch.

Ok, I'll go a step further in saying there is definitely a little bit of scuttlebutt around those two not being particularly enamoured at their current team for different reasons. Might turn out to be nothing, they might change their mind but I think both are a case of if we want them, they arent as impossible to get as you might think.

Bookmark this. Adelaide will go after Cox big time . . . every year they keep asking the question. Need to sign Ryan up asap next year and then work on Cox long term.

Serong I’m not worried about. He will 100% re-sign long term. . . Serong and Brayshaw are literally captaining the club already, every club decision goes tru them including recruiting.

We stacked our chips this year guys with player payments and draft stock.
This is the team we will be challenging with, the rebuild is over.
No way man, fyfes huge contract ends at the end of next year.

We just lost Logue who we ended up offering a decent contract to keep.

We put draft capital down to ensure hawks paid most of Jaeger's salary for next season.

We will have cap space to go after another big fish next season.
