AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
A classic example of the folly of picking for positional needs instead of the most talented player, with a top 10 pick.Heh, those two available and they pick the next Josh Schache instead
Don't agree, but he isn't going to crack our top 25.Fellas need to get over Crowden..
Hack. Good clubman but hack.
I'm loath to join the Crowden bashing (there will be consequences) but I wouldn't really even say he's a 'dominant' WAFL mid. That was only the 5th time in 38 games he has exceeded 30 disposals and the third this year. It's also the only time he has exceeded 32 disposals. He's a good WAFL mid with a far better than average kick (but not complimentary decision making. If it was he'd be AFL quality I reckon despite all his other limitations).Crowden will always be the type of player that dominates at WAFL but is just a journeyman at AFL level. OK to have as depth but will always be in strife around contract time. We need list spots so I think his time with us is up
He can hit targets.Crowden would have been an absolute weapon in early 2000s footy, bombing the ball over the flood into open space. Teams structure too well now, you need to actually hit targets.
He can, but that doesn't mean he does. He far too frequently just kicks for distance. There are plenty of players who are small and slow who have made it by pairing good skills with excellent decision making (Caleb Daniel being the superlative example).Mitch would be one of our better players at hitting a target. He has an amazing left foot.
He's just in that awkward place of being small without being lightning quick or being played off half back.
You haven't see Crowden then... Laser kickCrowden would have been an absolute weapon in early 2000s footy, bombing the ball over the flood into open space. Teams structure too well now, you need to actually hit targets.
Playing in the backline and doing that is easier...He can, but that doesn't mean he does. He far too frequently just kicks for distance. There are plenty of players who are small and slow who have made it by pairing good skills with excellent decision making (Caleb Daniel being the superlative example).
I've seen 5 years of Crowden with only a small improvement in his decision making. He's gotten better at making decisions a little faster and not getting caught HTB so often, but he still makes far too many bad decisions. You haven't see Crowden then... Laser kick
Sure, then make Crowden a HBF. I'm not saying he's a lost cause, but in his current WAFL role it is no surprise that he cannot get AFL games in a contending side.Playing in the backline and doing that is easier...
I think you'll find that kind of player invariably has good skills on either side of their body (Sam Mitchell, Caleb Daniels, Liam Baker all come to mind). Mitch is very much a one-sided left footer which means he is so much easier to corral or catch. He can, but that doesn't mean he does. He far too frequently just kicks for distance. There are plenty of players who are small and slow who have made it by pairing good skills with excellent decision making (Caleb Daniel being the superlative example).
I have been looking over our list and I can't help but be excited for the future when all of the listed players are under the age of 25 and we are still competing in the finals in season 2022.
AGE 24: Logue, Darcy, Shultz, Brodie, Meek, Cox, Banfield
AGE 23: Crowden
AGE 22: Sturt, Brayshaw, Frederick
AGE 21: Serong, Clark, Henry, Young
AGE 20: Chapman, O'Driscoll, Treacy
AGE 19: Walker, Johnson, Amiss
AGE 18: Erasmus
Best 22 under 25:
Walker - Logue - Chapman
Clark - Cox - Young
O'Driscoll - Brayshaw - Johnson
Henry - Treacy - Frederick
Amiss - Meek - Shultz
Darcy - Serong - Brodie
Erasmus - Sturt - Banfield - Crowden
I left out the unknowns in Western, Worner, Benning, and Kuek and that is still 22 players, let that just sink in for a moment.

This seems like a massive fail - traded up to get a player they really wanted and he's delisted not long after...We could do a lot worse than take Liam Stocker for free for experienced, ready made depth
