Good heritage, but a flanker?
It's the least of our needs, but we're not exactly flush with anything. We've been playing guys like Cal Brown and Bianco on that high half forward role and will soon lose Sidey and Pendles, who are currently playing as flankers for us. Anyone who is good in any role will improve both the team immediately and the list for the longer term.

Yeah fair point. If he’s half as good as his father happily take him

Yep and Hine is getting really desperate now.

Sounds good in theory, but the reality of having a good idea in just 6 months isnt too realistic. At the end of this year, after 24 months at the club, many of our 2020 crop will still have futures that could go either way.
In reality the 6 months is like getting preferential access. It can always be extended for a year or two as you correctly suggest.

You know Roo isn’t actually on our list yet right? It’s hardly crazy to give a speculative kid a scholarship that essentially gifts him to us if he develops in to something worthwhile, that’s just good business.
Thank god you’re right.
I’m using Roo as an example because he is another experiment where we invest in hope of a longer term return where we may yet list him. He’s a relevant example even though he’s not on our list. Yet. Nor likely will be.

If there is the opportunity to use two picks in the msd I’d take it

For one there is probably 8 or so players I’d look at delisting at years end

Secondly, Hine has done well with the MSD… all of noble, Begg and Johnson can play

Finally… we have depth issues and really need a further injection of mature age talent

Agree. We have to take every opportunity to improve what is a very thin list talent wise.

If there’s talent available and it’s in the 19-24 age range we have to look at it.

A post by Knightmare from our draft/trade thread on Voss:

Looking for a capable but underutilised general defender?

I don't think you have to look any further than the state leagues for a solution.

I'd first up be looking to Angus Baker through the MSD who continues in my view wrongly to get snubbed by AFL clubs.

Back in his NEAFL days, he averaged in excess of 30d across half-back and last year he was good for 25d+ and almost 7 marks per game in the VFL.

You're looking at a high level intercepter and ball user.

Casey Voss from the SANFL is another to watch and is similarly ready and improved last year into an AFL calibre general defender. Son of Michael. Big time improver who plays a sensational two way game. Rock solid competitor and component to a defence who does everything well. Brisbane missed by not taking him as a F/S last year I feel and is better than a lot of the guys they already have.

I'd view both in a Collingwood context as guys who can walk into the side and improve the best-22.

Hine will be a kid in a candy store with all the flankers!

We have so many needs, we should simply take the player most likely to provide a long term starter as an improvement in any position.

Agree with this. I reckon best bet is actually a midfielder. Even if we did go a flanker/small/medium that might be the player that frees up a Maynard for example to midfield. There's a flow on sometimes with these decisions.

Yep. Plus I'm expecting a kid. I think we need to be drafting kids for 5 years time. The only players we currently have that I think we can be confident of contributing in 5 years are Daicos*2, Quaynor, Moore, Ginnivan, Crisp and Grundy (JDG if we keep him). Hopefully a couple more from the last two drafts, but I don't think any are bankable enough to impact player type chosen, although I probably wouldn't go a medium forward unless he was rated well above the other options - due to Henry and McInness.

I feel good about Maynard and Lipinski, and I think there’s always a spot for what Noble provides albeit that he’s unheralded.

Otherwise I agree with you. I’m not even 100% confident that Ginnivan will continue to produce what he’s currently putting up. Fingers crossed.

I would add Maynard, Noble, Cameron, McCreery, Begg, Henry, Lipinski to be contributing in 5 years.
That's 14 - a good base to build from.

Do this and we end up like NM - no thanks.
If you were really ruthless, we could do a bit of both. Keep Sidey, Howe, Roughy and Pendles for as long as possible to go with Moore, Grundy and Maynard and you've still got leadership. Trade Mihocek, Crisp, Adams and Elliott and let JDG walk. We'd be really bloody hopeless for the next 3 years though and it would likely to negatively affect the development of our kids. But there is a fair chance that we're going to hit really bloody hopeless pretty soon anyway.

I’d prefer a genuine crumbing small on flank or to push another forward on the flank.
