If we are trading TDK I'd much rather it look something like...

TDK>Geelong
Pick 7> Cam Mackenzie
Pick 10> Liam Ryan + 20
Pick 28> Lloyd Meek
Pick 20> Olli Hotton

Lewis Young>STILL IN THE BACKLINE BECAUSE HE'S A FUTURE GUN

Anyway that's enough fantasies for tonight.

No one invests in past performance mate - because the past has nothing to do about teh future and the future is what everyone is paid to do well in.
All teh past does is keep or put a player in the game - for as long as their future potential is relevant to the demand side of the equation.

This is pretty basic stuff btw- nothing Arrow is saying is anything more than common sense and how any successful business runs its books as far as people go ...

Was Cripps' last 2 years a factor? Or was his value placed more around his 2019 and earlier form?

Would be very happy with Tarryn Thomas, but would be sad to see some players go on the back of it, which seems to be the mechanism for how that will come to pass.
I'm not sure anyone other than the most one-eyed North supporters would agree with you on this.

Very good young footballer, but he's nowhere near Daicos right now nor is he close to being a great AFL footballer.
I think you're forgetting that I'm the one who wanted North to bid at pick 1 for Daicos. I'm saying he's already a great player, but Daicos is absolutely better.

If I were North I'd be asking for more than the picks Port have on hand.
Panicked? Are you having a laugh Jim?

Question the acquisition all you like, I certainly have, but there's absolutely no part of it that even closely resembles a panic buy.

More than happy for both Dow and Setterfield to find new homes via trades
If we shoot both out the door we've completely run through our senior inside midfield depth. Would much rather we trade away general defenders or our less regarded half-forward types, than shoot ourselves in the foot this much when it comes to midfield production.

Also the bar for Setterfield has just been set at a pick in the 40-60 range in this draft, and a mediocre future 3rd next year, at best. He's out of contract. Dow doesn't seem like he'd generate more than a pick in the 25-35 range, which I'd still argue is abysmal for his talent level.

This is why I wanted us to chip away at other aspects of senior depth instead of throwing contracts at everyone: imagine being able to grab Tarryn Thomas right now for pick 28 and maybe swapping our future 2nd with North's future 3rd, all while freeing ourselves of Newman, Plowman, and Owies.

Opens up plenty of opportunities for our U22 bracket to step up.

Not every player on the list has a upside.
As Arrow mentioned average wage is going to be close $400k soon.

TDK has a year to run on his contract, he has 12-18 months to hit his peak, despite some negativity on here he carried the load on his own for most of the season.
We would expect him to go to the next level in the next 1-2 years so $500-$550k is not far off the mark.

Geelong are very keen to attract him in the near future.

Don't want to get into someone else's bun fight but if he has a year to run on his contract why should we be thinking of a new one now?

I've never understood this, the AFL world has many ex coaches who have had contracts extended and have been sacked during that extension. And how many players have peaked before being offered big money, long term, contracts that clubs have tried to get rid of?

In Clarkson's first year (pretty sure) Holland was the highest paid player on the Hawthorn list and spent most, if not all of the year in the two's. Wasn't even given a send off game from memory.

If TDK grows a leg next year then he's possibly worth even more than the money thrown around here but if he remains stagnant do we still go with four years at $550K?

How long do you continue to take a stab at how good a player will be?

I wouldn't be offering big money to TDK, but I don't believe it's accurate to say he's a reserve ruck.

Played 19 games this year including a significant number in tandem with Pittonet. He's clearly very much in the frame for senior selection each week.
He’s played more games than Pitto since he arrived at the club.

TDK last 2 seasons 32 games. 39 last 3.

Pitto last 2 seasons 21 games. 34 last 3.

TKD took massive steps this year. He’s never going to massive grappler type ruckman

He’s athletic. Geelong just won a flag with Stanley and Blicavs who are both athletic and play multiple positions on the ground

TKD will be fine

Looks like Harmes ‘may’ ask for a trade has met with Essendon.

As much I hate *, if I was a solid/fringe mid who had ever seen the inside of a centre square, I would probably explore trade talks with *.

If you're over 180cm and weigh more than 36kg, you've got an inside mid role for the rest of your career.

Past performance is a pretty good indicator of future output- it’s a factor.
Not saying is weighted as highly, but it’s a metric used.
Like any successful business you balance what’s worked previously, what’s working now & what u hope to achieve in the future. You take in all relevant data- surely that’s not to hard to grasp.

the discussion was about what TDK's future contract might be fair value - and Arrow was challenged about the figure he mentioned - by people ( including yourself) who suggested his past performance wasn't indicating that a future contract pointed to by Arrow 550K as a guesstimate was too high - just read the flow of 'discussion'

I pointed out the line of thinking regarding any player's future value based on how the world works - looking forward- which included everything you have repeated above.

Clubs have to make calculated 'guesses' about what a player is likely to be able to contribute and where that fits into the whole playing group's ability to execute a game plan to beat the opposition. It isn't an exact science - but the focus is always on a particular player's ability to contribute to team outcomes.

Carlton kept Murphy on for a few years too long - because of thinking about his past. WC overpaid for Kelly thinking too much about his current form and not the cost to them of two first rounders - Geelong spent those two first rounders to get Cameron in...

it all boils down to fit - cost isn't a big deal in the scheme of things - because fit sorts that out.

A big tall marking forward ruck forward who is progressing well is a harder type of player to find and develop than a typical smaller player - paying them a premium over average payment of 30% for an unknown duration ( contract length) isn't a stretch - if the players projected output potential is a better risk return bet than alternatives.

I don't usually participate in trade / draft discussion because draft in particular and even trades are a bit of a lottery. Kelly went from Geelong most damaging midfielder to bog ordinary form at WC - his projected fit with the WC team wasn't a good as expected or to repeat myself- not as impactful as Cameron's 'fit' at Geelong - absolutely magnificent trade / swap by Geelong - able to be done because Geelong seem to have smart list management down pat - they have a at least a basic understanding of portfolio management and apply it better than most.

I agree with everything U just said.
Top tier ruckman are usually cheapish young & then astronomically expensive-Brody Grundy contract (2017-2020) before the latest mega deal was a 3yr extension & he was all Australian 2018- for the life of me I can’t find how much he was being paid at that time- would be an interesting piece of info.

Definition of madness- Trading TDK
Definition of Absurd- Dropping/Trading Kennedy
Kennedy missed 5 games last year.
How many Kennedyless games did carlton win?
Elite marking inside bulls with great kicking skills do not grow on trees. Stop focusing on what he isn't ( a 2 way runner) instead of what he is.
I always thought Kennedy's issue was more with being slow. He plods, but he seems to plod all day when allowed. Reckon his lower TOG games were when we had Crippa, Hewett and one of the slower guys on a wing (Setters, Newnes) and it was more about managing the field to keep some leg speed out there.

TDK needs a bigger tank...and also have another share at least 40% of the load. There were times this year he just leapt over the opposition ruck a-la Nick Nat. But he doesn't seem to be able to sustain that leap just at the minute. If Pitto can stay fit and TDK gets a bit more fuel in his legs, look out.

Trade Radio saying Liam Jones deal will be lodged soon.

TDK will get offers in excess of 700k in 12 months time. There was already talk of it during the season and I’m sure Geelong are in his ear as we speak.

550k to take him to free agency is not outlandish. Obvious overs on current output but you would’ve said the same about Tim English in 2020.
