North has apparently looked at him as well. Personally, I think that we are better off retaining Dow and letting Setters go. Setters is another one pace inside mid... like the rest of our midfield. Dow has an explosive burst out of the middle which is something we need.
I tend to agree, he has limited trade value - if his contract is at the low end he's better on our list than as a gift elsewhere. Showed improvement in the VFL I thought, you never know when the opportunity might present itself.

If Kennedy or Hewett goes down for an extended period... it would be the perfect chance for Dow to show that he belongs in the AFL ahead of the end of his contract. You're right, he showed a lot of improvement in the VFL... however everyone is going to say "but he can't run out games". I would postulate that the games where he didn't go back out in the second half were the games where he was named as an emergency, in a Victorian game, and the club didn't want him cashing in all his tickets if he had to suddenly had to rush to the big game.

Yes, that would be a major element.
We could trade contracted Dow or keep him (the clubs choice?) or we could trade un-contracted Setters for whatever we can get or lose him for nothing.
Or we still might trade them both.
If Dow remains, It could just as likely mean that we've decided to retain some kind of depth without offering Setters a mid-length contract on good money.
I think it's more if Setters were contracted and Dow wasn't, we'd only consider trading Setters for a really good deal, and we'd be taking whatever we could get for Dow.

I haven't heard his GPS numbers but the defensive running is still the obvious weakness. If another club was offering a starting it would be a wise decision to grab it, but I think he'd be working his way up from the VFL at most clubs. Not sure if Vossy is the biggest fan based on his limited game time, but he's one I haven't put the line through yet.

Dow? Where is he physically right now? If he’s anywhere but Icon Park running and training then he’s deluding himself.

The culture of AFl players needing eternally long breaks bewilders me. They don’t understand fitness. No clue. They don’t understand the opportunity cost of taking all the time off they do.

Dow should be taking the chnace to have the almightiest of preseasons.

Anyone confirm if he is?

We had 19 rounds missed by the big 5:
Cripps: 5
Kennedy: 6, 11, 21, 22, 23
Hewett: 7, 8, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23
Cerra: 2, 14, 15, 22
Walsh: 1 & 23

Some games of particular note:
Rd 5: Cripps out. Dow unused sub.
Rd 11: Kennedy out. Dow 21d.
Rd 19: Hewett out.
Rd 20: Hewett out.
Rd 21: Hewett & Kennedy out. Dow 13d.
Rd 22: Hewett, Kennedy & Cerra out. Dow unused sub.
Rd 23: Hewett, Kennedy & Walsh out

His best game was 21d and he was dropped straight after because of his defensive efforts. The rd21 game was putrid. By the end Docherty was preferred to be parachuted in from half back rather than play Dow.

He’s useless anywhere except on ball so has to spend a huge amount of time on the bench, unless you want to sacrifice out midfield by moving our better midfielders out to accommodate him.

Unless he works his arse off and fixes some of his issues then he’s probably only a viable starter if all of Cripps, Kennedy, Hewett and Curnow are unavailable.

Also, there were games where he definitely stayed on the park in the 4th, including starting at pretty much every centre bounce, and just couldn’t get his hands on it or have any impact. Maybe he and Stocker were in the same running group.

Agreed. I'd probably offer 250kpa for 2 years plus games (15 games) trigger for a 3rd.

Clearly AFL level depth. Played two huge games at the back end. Might just be finding his feet finally.

I think it's terrible list management if he's leaving purely for the extra year. I don't think he deserves more than 250k but some contract stability is reasonable. He's far from a dead weight list position and clearly more valuable than a draft pick we won't use.

That said, if it's money, he can * right off.
Acres move to us was all about money..

Bottom 6-10 players who are never likely to get the 'golden contract' will more than often either leave for money, opportunity or in Setters case, both.

Yep, don’t do it for the cash - we have enough of them. Play for the love Setters, for the love. FMD.

AFL should have let this go through.
Will be interesting to see what happens. In the proposal, Port would get in #36, but they need to get a F2nd instead to be allowed to do the trade. Seems silly.

Agreed, interesting that the bottom 6 or so players are generally the difference between good and great teams but aren't rewarded with the big contracts.

Setters hasn’t been offered a contract. We forced him to look. It’s Tuohy all over. Don’t blame the kid for trying to earn peanuts, the club failed him and gave him no choice.

Absolutely it's about money.. it seems like the club has an offer of what they think he's worth, which seems less in $$ or contract length (or both) than what Essendon have offered and what Setters wants. Wouldn't blame him at all trying to maximise what potentially could be his last AFL contract.
But I don't believe the club has 'failed' him. Fringe players get cut/traded/low balled at every club, every year..

The difference is that Tuohy was best 22 every week and very much a required player. Setterfield has done SFA except for the last few games when his contract was up for renewal.
