Cheers! For George when I say he is "the footballer I wanted to be" his ability to look like the best player on the field when he's on is something that I think stands out. When I played football as a kid I always wanted to look like I was playing the best and when Wardlaw is on he has that star factor that seriously leaves an impression. His contested work and his sheer power are enough to make you sit up and take notice when he's playing, reminiscent of Jason Horne-Francis in many ways in his u18 year. I'd probably still take JHF over him though

For Jhye Clark he plays such an honest and clean game that you always know what you're getting. The Selwood comparisons are pretty apt, when Selwood plays you can usually tell from the start how good his game is going to be, when he plays a really good game he'll play a really good game for four quarters, and he'll usually replicate that really good game multiple times in a season. He could probably end up being the best player from the draft just from his ability to play well consistently, he'll play 250+ games, and 200 of them will probably be pretty damn great

Mitch Szybkowski is one I want to rate higher but I don't see the same star factor I see in the 15 players ahead of him. He's similar to Clark in that way where you know what you're getting but Clark as a player just consistently plays better games. He's really good at what he does but doesn't quite have the flash or the high peaks of the likes of the best midfielders in the draft. He's a good decision maker, he's got great hands and his contested work is brilliant, but I'm probably more excited by the peaks of the players above him.

I'd have Barnett ahead of him, but he's probably the best on a needs basis (if we're going to draft another ruckman I doubt we use Pick 30), given I think he can translate into a really good forward at AFL level after playing a lot of midfield as a junior.

I'd be happier with Jones being local and filling a need but if Barnett is the slightly better player I'd be happy with him too. Quality rucks are rare, so he'd fill a need for us in development but will also become a valuable asset at the trade table if need be.

They are free in all sense of the word. None of what is paid to category B rookies is on the salary cap. Any of the players who play another sport and haven't played AFL for three years can go straight onto any team's list.

It's just about securing their signature. This is what I was talking about when I said the track and field athletes in WA and SA who didn't quite make the Commonwealth Games team would be rich ground for unique physical capabilities.

Anyone got this?

FUTURE DOCKERS?
The three names in line to join Freo’s NGA draft class

Fremantle’s Next Generation Academy success hasn’t come by chance - and the program could soon add three more names to its draft class, according to coach Roger Hayden.

I thought it meant join AFL not just Freo?

Three is very optimistic, but the closest three to being added to AFL lists this year would probably be Jaspar Scaife, Josh Draper and Conrad Williams.

Would we add Scaife and Draper to Benning and Kuek? That's in addition to Amiss and Treacy who seem miles in front

They look like a collection of very long shots, and all seem to be long term prospects.

Think it depends on if we take Kelm as a cat B rookie or not.
Sounds like Draper may attract a late bid we’d need to match. Scaife and Williams could be Cat B rookies but we may only have 1 position available if Kelm is coming so we’d have to decide who we think is most likely to make it.

Probably not but I would say he would be more a very tall but athletic (197cm) utility that has the skillset could fill a range of roles, which could be a really useful thing to have on the list.
He sounds like Jackson lite. Maybe Westhoff if we are lucky?

Reckon KPD might be plausible based off the descriptions ( have never actually seen him play). Those athletic big dudes always seem like candidates for defenders.

Petition to ban the phrase “son of a gun” from the AFL. Is there a more overused cliche in the lead up to draft day?
Were they really all guns is my question? 🤔

If players who have no secure spot at AFL level can be called "AFL star player" then there's no integrity in the terms used.

Draper could fill the list spot vacated by Logue, in both application and the daydreaming of fielding him in almost every single position.

Living in non-AFL territory you get used to "AFL star" being used in stories about guys getting into off-field trouble who were never even AFL listed!

Finished picking for Freo over at the BF Phantom Draft, here's my picks for those interested

So close to Ed Allan :(

Pick 33. Jed Hagan (Utility/Western Australia) (174cm, 74kg)

Who doesn't love a utility? Jed Hagan is one of the most versatile players in this draft, having played a dominant role in the midfield at colts level, a small defender at state level and as a half forward at senior level for East Fremantle. Hagan has constantly played a starring role since he debuted for the East Fremantle Colts as a 15 year old and has effortlessly translated his game to 3 different levels of football and in 3 very different positions over the course of 2022. He's a complete footballer, with a brilliant footy IQ and an all around works-man game that will see him potentially play AFL football in his debut season

I picked him for Freo for both his versatility and for the fact he was best available. Hagan is the perfect pick as he adds both forward depth and midfield depth, two areas I was hoping to target in this phantom draft (Despite a really good starting midfield, it's likely that we'll only have Matt Johnson and Neil Erasmus playing as inside midfielders in the WAFL, and it's nice to have that extra depth, especially with someone who can play straight away). The WA factor always helps, but that wasn't considered when picking

Also Considered: Sam Gilbey/Jed Adams/Jaiden Magor

PMBangers you're up friend :)

Fremantle - Pick 43. Jed Adams (Tall Defender/Western Australia) (195cm, 89kg)

I'm in a pretty lucky spot here because I actually have two players in my top 30 still available. If I was going best available at this pick, I'd be taking Sam Gilbey, he's incredibly talented, but Jed Adams is only one spot behind Gilbey in my rankings and plays a role that Fremantle need. So yeah, here's my second Jed that I've picked in the span of 24 hours, how many list managers can say that?

Jed Adams is a very good key defender, he's not the best tall defender named Jed (or a variation of Jed, such as Jedd) but he's a brilliantly talented and exactly what clubs are looking for in a lockdown key defender. He is a brilliant one-on-one defender and when he ends up with the ball after winning a one-on-one, he's very good with the ball. Just like Jed Hagan who I previously picked he's a very smart footballer and has a real knack of finding the correct option.

But why Jed Adams for Fremantle? Well, we did just lose Griffin Logue and Joel Hamling is getting older by the day (and god forbid Alex Pearce falls over again) so there's a real spot for him to develop in the WAFL. He has already played senior footy for Peel this year and didn't look out of his element, and I think if worst comes to worst he could play AFL football in 2023

Also Considered: Sam Gilbey, Steely Green, Jason Gillbee, Jaxon Binns

Fremantle Pick 64. Jaxon Binns (Outside Midfielder/Vic Country) (182cm, 73kg)

Binns probably shouldn't have dropped this low, and could go as high as top 30 on draft night. Binns is one of the best outside runners in this years draft and has used his endurance and running ability to great effect in 2022 to prove his talents to recruiters and amateur draft watchers alike. Binns is one I've been back and forth on throughout the year, initially his kicking was a put-off, similar to Ed Langdon in his Fremantle days, he has a tendency to kick poorly not being a precision kicker. But his sheer weight of numbers and his ability to get on the scoreboard show that there is a lot of upside in Binns, especially if he can improve his kicking in the long run.

But why Jaxon Binns for Fremantle? The pursuit of Jeremy Sharp in this year's Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period (Has anyone here considered installing a Rheem btw?) shows that the club know there is room for more outside talent in the clubs list, especially with the loss of Blake Acres in the trade period. He'll be able to develop alongside Karl Worner at Peel Thunder, and he should have a spot on the opposite wing of the teamsheet. He is also too good of a talent to pass at Pick 64, I suspect in the real draft we'd be lucky to have anyone of his level here. Binns wasn't the best available in my rankings, Steely Green was, but he's very similar to Jed Hagan, so I decided to go with Binns instead

Also Considered: Jason Gillbee, Harry Cole, Toby McMullin, Hudson O'Keefe

eDPS is next

Fremantle - Pick 69. Noah Long (Midfielder/Vic Country) (178cm, 74kg)

I couldn't let him slide any further, even if he's not actually a need. Noah Long has all the traits of a great inside mid. He has clean hands, great stoppage work and a nice burst of acceleration that could see him become a very good midfielder at AFL level. His ability to impact the scoreboard has been a major improvement this year, he joins Hagan and Binns in being players who can impact the scoreboard and play in the midfield.

Obviously Freo fans won't be happy I've picked two smaller mids, but in reality I think Freo take 3 picks in the ND and 1 pick in the rookie draft, so think of this pick as a nice extra bonus. I do think there's a role for him in Freo, his forward ability that he's built on over the past 12 months could see him playing a role there with some midfield minutes, but you wouldn't be expecting a Pick 69 to play AFL football in a team that just made the semi-final

For others I considered, Hudson O'Keefe was next in line for a brilliant talent and filling a need. Harry Cole as a half-forward is a great goal kicking option, Steely Green is another player similar to Long and Hagan but with less upside. For some other experimental picks (who I thought I'd be picking at these late picks) there's Jasper Scaife from our academy as a tall forward, Bailey Maxwell who has some exciting upside as a ruck but one I can see not getting drafted, Kaleb Smith could become an absolute weapon off of half back or the wing and Toby McMullin is a great small forward who I also considered closely. Finn Emile-Brennan is another favourite of mine but would have required a bid

I also have Luke Teal, but he REALLY doesn't fit a need for Freo so I chose against him

If I had known Noah Long would slide so far I might not have gone with Hagan first. He's a bargain there and obviously picking two small midfielders is going against what we'll actually do in the draft but both players are pretty versatile and can play roles in the forward and back line

Had I gone purely on a needs basis, I would have gone with Hudson O'Keefe, a ruckman from Victoria who reportedly has family ties to Western Australia. I don't really rate any of the tall forwards on the board high enough to pick them besides Jasper Scaife, who we'd likely get as a category-b rookie. I passed on Draper for the reason I don't see him as a national draft pick

Either way, pretty happy to get 4 players I rate in my top 40 with only a single pick inside of the 40

Happy to answer questions 🤗

Was curious about not matching the bid for Draper, with 7 list spots available thought we could match the bid, still select 4 plays and have 2 spots left for the rookie draft (1 if we decide to keep a spot open for Tippa)
