I’m not across this discussion across Hewett and co. But that supposed info from an interviewing recruiter sounds like genuine BS to me. Yep jumping on a public forum like this and saying “Cracking the s*#ts”. Sounds a little like tip top Sumich and the comments he made about Trew.

Sumich was correct about Trew.
He’s since been delisted

I heard Hewett got kicked out of his HS due to a certain incident. Idk if it is true or not so I won't say why

Darcy Jones if he drops and is available would be my preference at our first. Yes he is small but is a small forward and gun midfielder. Happy to try and move a few spots up to secure him.

41. Best Available (hopefully Gilbee is still available as a utility)
42. Jed Adam’s/ Ethan Phillips
50 odd pick: Ruckman
Scaife, Draper etc.
Draper, Scaife have the height required to add depth to the key positions.
So I think we may try to fix some holes, depth to the list.
I think the combine results will have a bearing on our decisions.

I agree. I'd bet my life that post was not from anyone who has been anywhere near a player interview. And if they are working for a club, zero chance of that in my humble opinion, they won't be for long.

Barnett if he’s still there for me , no one knows if he’ll end up a Ruck , Fwd Ruck , KPF or KPD nice versatile big lad and he attacks the ball at its high point and can drag in a contested mark …… something that is a diabolical weakness in our squad

Tabs - has he ever left the ground

Amiss - early call but doesn’t look like it’s his go

Kuek - same as amiss

Jackson - decent leap but doesn’t seem to have the timing

Darcy - lol , can’t even get of the ground at centre bounces

Treacy - no hope

Barnett won’t help much this year but at least it’s progressing

I agree re key positions. We're set in that area imo. Need to back in the ones we've got and then as you say, add Scaife and Draper.

A young developing ruck I can understand though.

The main focus for the draft needs to be forwards and or goal kickers imo. Every player taken needs to have a record of hitting the scoreboard regardless of position, size, weight etc, even the young ruck.

My thoughts on Scaife and Draper are that they'd be good freebies as Cat B rookies, but I'm not basing my draft around getting them. If I have someone like a Jed Adams or Ethan Phillips rated higher, I'm not overlooking them for a lesser tall as a rookie.

And personally, I think we have room for another KPD - and I would argue, a need for one. Hamling looked better as the season went on, but do we want to go into a season with him as the only realistic back up? Benning being able to step in to a key defensive role in a finals campaign seems pretty unlikely. If he does develop that quickly, well that's a problem I'd love to have. But otherwise, I'd absolutely look to bring in a KPD with one of our main draft picks.

Medium forward, back up ruck and a depth KPD would be my 3 biggest 'needs' going into the draft.

How many KPD in this draft that'll be available to us address that issue?

I’d happily take Ethan Phillips and be comfortable with him playing next year. Jed Adams would instantly be ahead of Benning in my opinion, looked more comfortable in his one league game.

Hugh Davies, Josh Weddle, James Van Es are all physically well developed and could come on quickly. Not saying they’ll definitely be able to step up if required. I was more just highlighting how with one injury to Pearce or Cox and we’re going real deep into the depth chart if a project ruck/defender is next up.

Spot on as usual. With Logue gone we need to bring in KPD. Hamling is injury prone. From what I’ve seen of Benning (incl. reserves) he is miles off league level KPD to date. I really liked Jed Adam’s game. He lost South’s Jimmy Adam’s once but otherwise played him well. He had a good year in the colts and already weighs around 90kg.

I like Ethan Phillips as well. I’d be happy with either.

Hamling is injury prone, Benning a lot of development to go and is very raw. Still think Benning can play ruck where he did his best work in Colts. Slightly undersized but has good athletic traits. Peel gave Meek a few runs in defence as part of his development.

Some will argue that we had too many KPD and that was why Logue played forward. But he also played quite a few games as KPD and remember APearce and Cox suffered some injuries over the past few years but both generally had a good run in 2022. Swapping Logue out for an early second and bringing in a decent KPD with a third is a reasonable outcome. My preference was to retain Logue but he has moved on.

Yeah I’d draft a key defender with the same view - to develop Benning as the back up ruck. I think it’s probably his best chance and fits as the versatile athletic #2 to play behind either Darcy or Jackson if needed.

I wouldn’t be opposed to sitting on the ruck position for now. See how Benning goes, and reevaluating come mid season. Depends how the ruck prospects fall at the draft.

Agree. Jackson will probably take number one ruck if Darcy goes down. We probably need a developing Ruck/Forward and Benning will probably be a better option in that role.

A broken clock is right twice a day.

In Sumich’s case it’s the first thing he got into the media. I guess that makes Sumich significantly less reliable than a broken clock.
Whether right or wrong. It isn’t appropriate for him to say it in public media. Sure give Walls or the Eagles a quiet call where I’m still sure he wouldn’t say “Cracking the s*#ts”.

My point is Sumich isn’t showing himself to be the most professional in recent times and even then he wouldn’t say words to that effect. Yes he was right about Trew but he still toned down his inappropriate response. The reading of that transcript about a private interview is totally unprofessional. Sounds more like a keyboard warrior totally trolling.

Maybe. Guess it depends how well Benning has come on. I’d personally do both (KPD and ruck/forward).

I have barely seen Josh Draper due to injury but read at 197/198cm he has the ability to play some ruck.

You’re in South Aus what about Harry Boyd as mature age pick up - as very late ND or Rookie? He is at least quite versatile having played KPD and KPF.
