Can anyone tell me if Toby McQuilken from South has nominated for the draft.
He is a quality player, maybe not what we require, but he has much more development in him. Also, now a seasoned player.
Would his size, or lack of it make him hard to select? Only 180 and 70 Kgs.

I heard someone on the radio recently - might have been Mick Ablett - who said McQuilkin tested well at the draft combine. He won the 2km time trial in Perth and also came 1st in the agility test. Was he a top up selection for West Coast this year?

The translation for this is that pick 30 is being spent on a defender. We are being conditioned. My guess is we are all up in the Gilbey.
My read was midfielder at 30-34.

When asked about this years and next years drafts he said this year was very strong midfielder draft and next year strong on KPP.

He said best available at 30-34 and then more needs focused with reference to replacing Logue and Lobb.

I don’t mind utility type Sam Gilbert.

Although I was hoping for a dynamic small forward at our first pick, realistically there probably won’t be much quality left around that point. But I’m not too concerned looking at the list of draft nominees. We could do A LOT worse than having one of Narkle, Aarts, Stack, heck I’d even consider Elijah Taylor provided he’s done some work to improve his personal situation/respect for women.

At our first pick which is likely to be early-mid 30’s I’m looking at one of the following who may fall through to us.

Barnett, Hayes, George, Burgeil.

Other options are Munkara ( as after 40 he’s Essendon) or Magor, or even Jones as a forward in the Ballas mold.

I'd love for one of the top 30 to fall to us but can't see it happening even though there are surprises every year.

I think it'll be Harry Cole first up. Just have a feeling that we rate him highly and will see him as best available at 33 or so.

Then following Walls supposed plan, we take Harry Lemmey with a view of playing him as a defender and being the eventual Pearce replacement.

Next a ruck and I think we take Will Verrall.

With our last pick I think we won't be able to resist taking Jed Hagan who'll still be available.

Wallsy did keep saying character test.

So as much as we all have our personal choices, if they young fellas fail the character test they ain’t coming to Freo.

Maybe A few fall into that category.

We aren’t privi to the one on one discussions, but going by the edited interviews their are a variety of interesting individuals in every draft.

That's where we're all at a disadvantage and why Bigfooty predictions and phantoms vary so much from reality.

Okay, let me give a draft for us a shot...

#30ish - Coby Burgiel (183cm, 80kg mid/forward from VC)

The first pick might be the hardest to guess, because we'll obviously be hoping for someone we rate first round to slip - someone like a Charlie Clarke or Darcy Jones would be my ideal scenario, but I think it's unlikely. So I'll go with someone who's probably slightly better than 50/50 to be on the board, and Burgiel would give another forward/mid option.

#43ish - Jed Adams (194cm, 89kg defender from WA)

I just don't see us not getting Adams if he's available here, not that I have any secret info or anything. We've said we want a KPD and this guy has been under our nose all year, it just seems to fit. Ethan Phillips and Tom Scully might be in the mix as other talls.

#44ish - Jake Walker (189cm, 85kg midfielder from SA)

This is just a guy I like and would be happy to pick up, I rated him in the 40-60 range at the end of the Champs and there's now talk he's grown an extra 5cm to reach 189cm - which could well push him up the order a bit more. He flashed for SA, tough aggressive midfielder who can play forward too. James Rowbottom is one of my favourite opposition players to watch, and there's a bit of him to Walker's game. Other guys like Jaiden Magor, Jason Gillbee, Jaxon Binns, Kaleb Smith, Jed Hagan and Noah Long would be in the mix.

#65ish - Harry Cole (187cm, 77kg forward from WA)

A favourite of the Fremantle board it seems, so I'll include him too. He certainly fills a need for us. The biggest question here would be whether we take our top ruck preference before other teams could swoop in the rookie draft - particularly if Jackson Broadbent is the guy we want and we need to get ahead of West Coast. But there'll be others available. The other option would be a tall like Harry Lemmey, maybe a Hugh Davies, Phoenix Foster or James Van Es if we don't go tall earlier.

Rookie - Hudson O'Keeffe (202cm, 89kg ruck from VM)

Could really take your pick out of many ruck prospects here - Broadbent, Knobel, Verrall, Steene. But I think O'Keeffe probably has the highest ceiling, so I'll go him. It does seem David Walls will probably look to this position earlier though.

The West has also said we've had a few conversations with him (and Hugh Davies)

I'd be pretty surprised if he's not picked as well

If you want another developing defender then Jed Adams is the one. Looked right at home in his WAFL debut for Peel. If we dont take him WC will.

My guess

30ish Sam Gilbey
43ish Jed Hagan
44ish Tom Scully
65ish jed adams

Rookie spot
Kaleb Smith

And leave a spot for a ruckman

Stand aside, let the maestro make his prediction

30ish Harry Cole
43ish Conrad Williams ( matched bid)
44ish Jed Adams
65ish Jackson Broadbent

Rookie spots/Cat B

Josh Draper
Don’t think they’d have to take Cole at 30. Wouldn’t surprise me if he gets to rookie draft

Love it Chris25
Really hope we take Coby Burgiel.

Thanks for the write ups and input.

I've payed little to no attention to the draft this year, perhaps due to our late picks or perhaps due to the coverage of the draft this year, which for some reason feels less than it has been in the past, so forgive me if this kid is a gun and his draft footage looks wild. Saying that, I can't help but feel if we're looking for a tall, either forwards or back, then they need to be up near the 200cm mark.

The game is very much evolving the way of KPP's being around that 200cm mark. With Cox at 195 and lacking the athleticism to go with the giants, and Pearce in the back half of his career, who usually takes the 2m beasts, I feel we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot by taking a mid 190cm tall, who will be fighting out of their weight class in the air against these next gen talls. We saw something similar with Pav towards the back end of his career, where that slight disadvantage made a massive difference.

~200cm or GTFO, IMO.

This is why I like Phillips, at 198cm and 90+kg he’s the only one I can see offering that cover if Pearce is injured. Walls talked up Hamling but he’s only 194cm so not sure how effective he’d be against the King’s, thilthorp or Sam Darcy.
