This goes to the heart of our philosophy of trading / drafting and the mob down the road. We had pick 5, an F1 and gained an extra 2023 R2. Getting Rankine will be awesome - we had to do it BUT, could we have split pick 5 for a couple of 1sts??, traded one of them and a couple of 2nds for Rankine and kept a 1st in this round. I know we had Max M as a F/S and he was projected to attract a bid anywhere from the later part of the first round on so there was no point holding a late 1st. But could we have bundled our 2023 1st with a later 1st from the pick 5 split to get back into the top 10 this year should Phillipou have still been on the board for a live trade with a side??? I don't know the answers but I have not heard the club say we tried everything to get back in the frame for Phillipou.
Contrast that to the mob down the road - almost everyone to a man outside of their recruiting team thought they don't have the trade capital to get JHF..so what do they do, work up a complex 5 club trade option and not only end up with JHF but Rioli as well and did not have to trade a player as part of that when all and sundry said they would.
It seems like you say, we rest on our laurals and go 'well, we looked at things but we got Izak and Max M for some later picks and we got a steal in Dowling who we thought was going to go much higher...etc etc etc and the rest would have been too hard'
Port it seems say ' we have this but we are going to work every angle and push as hard as we possibly can to get what we want and be damned if we are going to die wondering'
I'd love to hear from the club honestly on what they really did to try to get draft collateral for Phillipou.
I agree totally with what you have said ( proposed a different option at the time but outcome would have been the same) but also let’s analyse Port
Has there more aggressive strategy paid dividends so far? It probably has allowed them to rebuild without a bottom out - but for every good aggressive deal they have done they have butchered others
Look at what they pushed Ladhams out for and then the extra picks for Sinn. That kid may be good but they paid a fortune. The pushed up and got Rozee for the loss of Wingard - who is shot now but played some good footy initially for the Hawks and could have helped them in one of their prelims
Then Dougal Howard - that trade probably cost them a GF berth, he was their rising genuine key defender
Couldn’t keep Amon and I think that has come to bite them as well.
For all the moves their list doesn’t appear to be well rounded or deep. They made aggressive “missing piece” moves pretty every year in Kens tenure and it hasn’t even got them to a GF
