This goes to the heart of our philosophy of trading / drafting and the mob down the road. We had pick 5, an F1 and gained an extra 2023 R2. Getting Rankine will be awesome - we had to do it BUT, could we have split pick 5 for a couple of 1sts??, traded one of them and a couple of 2nds for Rankine and kept a 1st in this round. I know we had Max M as a F/S and he was projected to attract a bid anywhere from the later part of the first round on so there was no point holding a late 1st. But could we have bundled our 2023 1st with a later 1st from the pick 5 split to get back into the top 10 this year should Phillipou have still been on the board for a live trade with a side??? I don't know the answers but I have not heard the club say we tried everything to get back in the frame for Phillipou.

Contrast that to the mob down the road - almost everyone to a man outside of their recruiting team thought they don't have the trade capital to get JHF..so what do they do, work up a complex 5 club trade option and not only end up with JHF but Rioli as well and did not have to trade a player as part of that when all and sundry said they would.

It seems like you say, we rest on our laurals and go 'well, we looked at things but we got Izak and Max M for some later picks and we got a steal in Dowling who we thought was going to go much higher...etc etc etc and the rest would have been too hard'

Port it seems say ' we have this but we are going to work every angle and push as hard as we possibly can to get what we want and be damned if we are going to die wondering'

I'd love to hear from the club honestly on what they really did to try to get draft collateral for Phillipou.

I agree totally with what you have said ( proposed a different option at the time but outcome would have been the same) but also let’s analyse Port
Has there more aggressive strategy paid dividends so far? It probably has allowed them to rebuild without a bottom out - but for every good aggressive deal they have done they have butchered others

Look at what they pushed Ladhams out for and then the extra picks for Sinn. That kid may be good but they paid a fortune. The pushed up and got Rozee for the loss of Wingard - who is shot now but played some good footy initially for the Hawks and could have helped them in one of their prelims
Then Dougal Howard - that trade probably cost them a GF berth, he was their rising genuine key defender
Couldn’t keep Amon and I think that has come to bite them as well.

For all the moves their list doesn’t appear to be well rounded or deep. They made aggressive “missing piece” moves pretty every year in Kens tenure and it hasn’t even got them to a GF

Could have got both if we really wanted to

There’s always a way … ask Port

Needed to be a 3 way trade with Geelong, GC and us

Geelong get Adelaide future first and Bowes
GC can have 5 and whatever pick Geelong have them
Adelaide got pick 7

No way Geelong turn down a future first from Adelaide as a free hit, regardless of how much they wanted Clark - they could have packaged our first with something else if they needed

Agree

If we really wanted to get it done we could have made it happen

Port would have convinced one of their players to leave if they really wanted to do it

We didn’t want it enough and it will hurt our rebuild in medium term

Not if we get Day (which I feel is unlikely but obviously a pooosibility)

A lot of water to go under that bridge just yet both draft wise and where we finish.

Reid has been good the first 2 weeks but he hasn't actually shot the lights out performance wise to this point and has also been spending time forward.

Doesn't always take the first option that presents and IMO he's been overdoing the physical stuff with his bigger body and strength.
Haven’t been overly impressed with the draft bunch this year so far in games I’ve seen

Need to see the SA boys and looking forward to seeing Tholstrum and Edwardes from WA

SA TEEN ON THE RISE
AFL clubs in need of key forward help have a new name to follow throughout this season, with the emergence of Central Districts target Liam Fawcett.
Fawcett finished last year strongly – kicking 14 goals in his last five under-18 games – and has picked up where he left off, including racking up 27 disposals, 14 marks and 13 score involvements, and kicking 3.4, on Saturday against South Adelaide.

The 17-year-old is a big, powerful forward whose contested marking has come on in leaps and bounds, and recruiters are also impressed with his work rate and significant improvement in the past 12 months.
Fawcett appears to thrive in pressure moments, too, slotting a game-winner from a set shot in the dying seconds against Norwood last season.

Don't tell me the pear boys are all tracking to be guns...

I watch Rome Burgoyne often on SANFL Now. He will make it. PA breeding program appears better than ours.

Edit. Do we need a GoFundMe program to raise funds to encourage more F/s.

I see ESPN have a new draft guru replacing Doerre...Jasper Chellappah.

This looks like a pretty decent effort first up.
Maybe Mitch Edwards a tad low but not too much to disagree with.
We aren’t getting Moir, are we.

Unlikely you would think, but I would be going all out to get him.
Out of this draft (assuming Reid is out of the question - because he is perfect for us), I would want Moir (an absolute game winner. With him, Pedlar, Rachele and Rankine, we would be incredible) AND Kane McAulife.
McAulife is an inside mid that stands at 187 cm, has a good build, good hands and can play more than one position.

These two would make for an incredible result.

Maybe we can take Lukosius's contract, and GC will give us pick 2...

lol..you have things mistaken...you think that we get to be the one who dominate in that relationship?..no, we are the ones who need to lube up before GC pillage us. We aren't a big Vic club

We would be parting with multiple 1sts for them to allow him to leave and we would have to take on his contract to boot

Another small forward?..

Would the crows Bigfooty board survive?

Can he become a mid would be the first thing I ask..

Lets say Rachele becomes a fulltime mid.. that opens a potential spot in the forward line..

But we are pretty full in that position list wise and that spot could easily be filled by Tyler Welsh the following year..

We need a high class mid with hopefully a big frame.. do we really need another small/medium forward?

Eh, a small/medium forward today is likely the high class mid we're looking for in 5 years.

There is little to no point taking stock in where a kid plays their football in their junior years. If they have the talent, they'll end up switching, unless circumstance gets in the way.

There's something strange that went on.

Giving up a top five pick so quickly for Rankine seems at cross purposes with us also really wanting a top ten pick for a midfielder.

At the time, I thought we must have really not rated the top of the draft - but ultimately it's actually seemed quite decent.

Yeah, I don't get it.
Probably have an email copy of an agreement that we’ll get Hollands for a 2nd rounder if we give 5 for Rankine 😆
