Doesn’t sound like a mid. The only players that run kicking efficiency numbers like that are playing behind the ball.

CLAREMONT:

#7 Daniel Curtin

The highly touted Curtin returned as captain for his first Colts game since July and while he didn’t dominate proceedings, he was a valuable contributor to the Tigers’ victory. Lining up in the midfield, Curtin started slowly but grew into the game after quarter-time, with his aerial prowess coming to the fore with some strong marks. The 18-year-old was subject to strong physical attention from the Demons that somewhat curtailed his influence, but still he won plenty of ball and provided good penetration from his left foot. With Perth charging in the final term, he was swung behind the ball and was a calm presence under pressure, helping navigate the Tigers to victory. He finished as the game’s leading ball-winner with 23 disposals and five marks, with his attention now turning to the upcoming National Combine in October.

Did you miss Hamish comments predraft?

“No capacity to take a 4th player even if we wanted to like we did last year”

If you believe Kristofs options were plausible that’s on you. He doesn’t rate Borlase, the club clearly does.

Dawson is a big boy, his breakout year was because he was played in a position that suits him. Tex is still around to help with his leadership. To suggest we’d keep a cooked player on our list so he can help our captain with his leadership for one year and potentially miss out on a 15 year player is nuts. We didn’t have the capacity to draft a player past 27, just think about that.

So you have quoted Hamish’s words before the draft regarding not able to get in a fourth option and yet I assume Hamish sits in List management meetings.
Which suggests he (as part of that group) felt it was more important to sign Sloane than to have a fourth pick? Otherwise they wouldn’t have signed him - it’s not like this was a last minute pressure decision. Sloane was signed months ago and we have signed other players since.

You think Hamish would have a say if Sloane stays? The guy tasked with finding draftees. Crikey.

But let’s say he did, do you know what he said? Was it was unanimous? Is that how list management works?

And let’s assume they all agreed, does that make it the right decision? All club decisions are correct….

I’ve interpreted Hamish words like you have, if we had more list spots we may have taken a slider, but Mostyn even agrees with you that he wouldn’t have resigned Sloane either, so I rekon we leave it at that cos your both agreeing on the key point that in your opinions you don’t think Sloane should have resigned.

Would help if people stop quoting me…

Thanks to you guys . Hopefully we return the favour next year .
I’m surprised norf didn’t offer a couple of there late firsts for 7 …. We weren’t trading out of this year so the weagles pick didn’t attract us. You guys gave us a decent deal …. Worked out well for both teams as we rate the goat herder very highly

That's right .....had forgotten how it was we took him so late as a 17 yo ......yes, it was a NSW zone program
Story was for all of Rendells genius that Tex had to constantly badger our club to finally look at him after other clubs (Pies IIRC) were into him. Finally Rendell came good.

then the pick swap with Bullies where he was promised a second rounder for either Welsh or Hudson but the Bullies slid down a number of spots and gave us a pick at least 5 picks worse than Matty was expecting. His response , “we will have a laugh about it later”

then the Danger over Ebert called

wasnt the most popular bloke back around this time in 2007, his first season as Recruitment Manager…

I am very glad it worked out the way it did...but surely one of the scenario's you guys could have planned for was trading 7 for the Wce 1st then setting up a deal to trade your own 24 1st back into the draft (heck add your f2 if needed as well) to get the extra player..whilst banking a likely.top 3 pick next year. Your own pick 14 would have got you gothard or leake still.

Surely that would have been the best of both worlds?

It seems that second step was very tough …. All the ins and outs will come out eventually I guess

They worked out a private deal to get Himmelberg 😜

The thing is it’s you, Mostyn and some others who have tried to shut down the impact on keeping Sloane. You don’t have to react to posts bringing it up.

Keeping Sloane is nothing more than a feel good member PR stunt by the club and frankly its at Sloane's expense. A good coach knows when to move players on. Clarkson moved on his premiership leading midfield once they passed their prime to usher in a new generation. Scott moved on his star players to refresh the list. In other words a good coach knows how to have a man conversation with players who no longer will push for a best 22 position. Nicks had a prime opportunity to demonstrate his player management abilities but he instead chose to play the PR game and backed in a player to make their own call. In other words, be the players friend.

As a betting man, I see Sloane retiring by midyear. Thereby taking a spot on the list we could have used by keeping Hamill on and rookie listing a much needed Ruckman.

Things I don't want to see at the end of next season.

If Tex has a bad year and his form slumps to the level of Dixon on a good day, I dont want the club to do this member PR stunt of babying him into another season. I want the club to demonstrate that for the first time in 10 years, list spots are at a premium and we put our big boy pants on and say to Tex, thanks for the ride but the rides over.

If Sloane does end up slinking back to the Sanfl and retiring due to an inability to press for best 22 then surely the club must be put under the spot light and we demand an explanation. Sloane did not demonstrate that he deserved another contract.

Tell you what, if our boy Curtin really does play like Jordan Dawson as a midfielder, i'll back our best midfield in over theirs now going forward.

Dawson, Laird, Crouch, Pedlar, Rachele, Rankine, Curtin

JHF, Rozee, Butters, Drew, Wines
There's a reason I chose Dawson's body for Curtin's head in my GIF on page 8.

Yeah i think maybe they had an internal bet where Goad would go. Hamish doesn’t look displeased in that shot , bunik looks bewildered

If we were after a ruckman and north cut our lunch we would have gone for the next best with our last pick. But who knows, North probably had genuinely earmarked Goad for that pick a week ago. We were probably just thrilled that left Edwards on the table.

Agree with everything you’ve written in this post, but I dispute this. He’s gotten his wish, I don’t think he cares about his parting legacy, he knows so many of our supporters will just cling to the memory of mid-2010s Sloane for dear life.

His contract comes at the expense of the young kids, the team, and winning. Him going on record saying he won’t have to worry about being relegated to the SANFL for years (plural) and his continuous selection in the back half of the season (Sloane starting over Pedlar in the Sydney game was just abhorrent, but he’d just re-signed, what other choice did the club have 🤪) just makes it blatantly clear the club doesn’t hold him to any sort of standards. And he’s certainly not self-aware enough to bow out gracefully, he’s also on record stating he won’t retire on his own accord.

Next year is going to be very interesting, and potentially very frustrating if what we fear comes to fruition. Let’s hope for everybody’s sake (Rory’s included) that the club and Nicks handle this sensibly. His job as head coach should depend on it, in my opinion.
