A lot of noise in the offseason that we didn't improve our list unlike Brisbane who traded in some talent.

I know it's only been 1 round but that conversation has probably been put to bed already? We only traded Francis in but already looks like our list has improved since last year
It was always a question of "will our natural development be better than new talent we could get?" and yes it is only round 1 but that seems to be a yes. Hopefully it stays that way

I think it’s also a question of whether the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The players seem to have bought into the system and are working for each other. Trade in a few flashy players on big contracts and that team spirit is potentially broken.

I think trading in players that fit is no problem but it requires care and diligence. I was really concerned about Bud but that worked out OK. We dealt with BBBH. And of course with 18 year olds things can go pear-shaped.
Your comment about the whole being greater than the sum of the parts is critical. Not just the players either.

Darcy Parish has put contract talks off til later in the year. Geelong Falcons boy. You know how this goes.

But I have to say this is one I'd most certainly be OK with Geelong picking up. Overrated IMO.

Hard to judge in such a shit team. If I was Geelong, I'd be taking a punt on him for sure.

Herald Sun Trade News:

SYDNEY

ATTACK MODE

The Swans will finally be able to consider acquisition rather than retention this year given an improved cap picture.

Of their top 10, the seventh-ranked player Dane Rampe (8, “Sydney’s general”) and eighth-ranked Lance Franklin (eight) are both out of contract.

But they are still very well paid while Tom Hickey (6.5) has just turned 32.

So it is no surprise that the Swans are prepared to have a huge crack at Tom De Koning with speculation of an eight-year deal being offered.

They have signed up so many of their youngsters and midfield stars that a succession plan for their key position players can now take place.

They were keen on Griffin Logue last year but missed out to North Melbourne, so watch this space as they try to improve their ruck and key position stocks at both ends.

LOL literally my first thought when I saw that Herald Sun had decided to rate every player in the league by some arbitrary system* was "You watch them refer to these ratings in every single article from now on in the future like they're gospel."

From now on, Dane Rampe isn't just Dane Rampe. He's Dane Rampe (8) and Tom Hickey isn't just Tom Hickey, he's Tom Hickey (6.5). And poor Justin McInerney can only be known as Justin McInerney (5.5) for the rest of his career now.

*a rubbish and massively incorrect system.

I don't know why your so cut up about rating people randomly, Caesar88 (3), is it because your upset by your board rating? I don't see Punts (7.1353859501) or Bedford (5apX*2tyR) complaining.

Bedford always complains about everything American and Saintly and off topic, and off topic, Caesar88 complains about anything he has not posted yet, until he does, and Punts needs to be more positive about anything.
I rate them all top 3 (so that I don't get on their bad side)........

Rusty with your quantitative data skills you’re certainly underselling yourself here.

On a separate note, if we're splashing the cash then there is no one I would want more than Himmelberg, however, slim that appears.

Larkey would be my second choice but he seems rather loyal to North sadly.

For some reason I get a bad feeling about signing TDK but perhaps that's just the PTSD from the whole Tippett debacle.

Upcoming draft F/S & brothers etc - mentions Isaac Barry briefly

Hawks have F/sons coming out of their ears this draft.
Interesting considering they traded out their second round pick for this year. You would think that with all those f/s picks they would've been keen to keep all of this season's picks.

Bid is likely all thing being equal to come between their first and second so that pick would have been useless. They do have a second rounder to match with (think it may be Port's or something)

I'd like Himmelberg. But I get the vibe that he likes where he is. Just vibe.
I don't reckon we go for TDK just because everyone seems to know about it. I also think we have ruck pretty much covered with Ladhams, Stretch, Edwards, so no need for a tall that can pinch hit in the ruck in that regard. Plus we have Amartey and McLean that can pinch hit.
That leaves FF position.
We have Reid and Buddy expiring and McDonald the "rising star". McLean and Amartey as potential partners. They are not superstars but they are servicable. Ideally we had another McDonald or Himmelberg but they don't grow on trees. This year is not a problem.
I think because we are "in the window for a premiership" there is a sense of urgency to get another gun tall. And we apparently have the cap space to do it according to others.
The alternative, if we cannot land an experienced tall, is to maybe move Parker forward to combine with Heeney and Haywood. We will have McDonald taking the number one defender and Papley and another small crumbing(Sheldrick/Konstanty). Though with Parker forward Sheldrick might be in the mids if he is signed again this year. Another benefit of moving Parker forward is that there are limited midfield position available to fringe players. Players like Sheldrick may decide to move if there are few opportunities to play first grade footy. It is what it is.
Options for next year to "fix" tall forward issue(if there is one)
  1. Get a Himmelberg/TDK
  2. rearrange our forwards like moving Parker forward and having a more mobile forward line
  3. or just draft one(we have additional picks this year to package up and move up the order) and keep doing what we do
  4. Do points 2 and 3.
I really don't know what the Swans recruiters are thinking. I trust them to make the right decision, even if it might take them to plan C, because plan A and B did not eventuate. It is difficult to get a lot of players to move to Sydney as part of a trade.

We were VERY interested in DGB in his draft year (but Logan fell into our lap).

He’s contracted to 2024, but Hawthorn has parked him in the VFL.

A promising young key defender that we liked and has mates at the club….

And there’s no rumours doing the rounds ….

Must mean he’s coming.
We are getting a King

I do wonder why we have been so reluctant to go with that sort of a set up with Parker, Hayward, and Heeney all great overhead and good vertical leaps they play as if they are a tall but with more ground ball pressure.

With all the great ball users we have in this side looking to deliver inside 50 surely they can kick to advantage of a smaller player.

With the speed the game is played at now maybe having one tall at home and 3 medium options might be the way to go. Could always go for 3 mediums, Papley, McDonald, and McClean.
