For me it is take best available KPD at that pick.

Doesn’t have to be a defender but best available tall, though I wouldn’t be shocked if we don’t. We tend to go best available first round. It’s why I’m a fan of trading down to 17&18. Archer Reid (for example) would be there so that’s a tall and then you have another pick to go whatever way you want. Then add Cleary at say pick 30-40.

Curtin and Oliver probably the best 2. There's plenty others that are reasonable in top 20 considerations too.

We don’t even have the resources to get to pick 8 let alone 6-7. I don’t think people realise just how many teams will try this and offer substantially more.

I find the concept of winners & losers of a trade period to be so bizarre. I think you can do well to get the players you want, get the deals done efficiently etc. (as we did), but at the end of the day all any club has done is add names to their list. If that was all it took to be a winner, then we wouldn't even bother playing games each week, we'd just award the four points to whoever names the best 22 on paper at selection.

I have no doubt he hasn't operated this way, but assessing the performance of Adrian Dodoro at Essendon over the past 20 years makes you think that he actually tries to "win" the trade period. In this period, even, they got such classic Essendon players of the last 20 years; Gresham, McKay and Duursma are a perfect band of Essendon recruits. Biggish or at least recognisable names to varying degrees who the rusted-on fans will know and get excited by, but not one of them has proven themselves as a reliable quality player and not one of them you would want to be banking on as a leader to pull the rest of the side along when things are tough. Goldstein has been excellent as a player but he's 35 so I highly doubt you're getting much from him.

That bunch of players would form a great trade period if you already had the tough, reliable, dogged bunch of players in the side already to compete well and consistently. But I don't see that amongst what the Dons have. And boy, is that exciting to hopefully see more underwhelming play for someone who detests the Bombers.

We have lots of future picks if we want to do it.

Not nearly as valuable as many teams. Everyone will assume we are a top 4-6 side. It’s nowhere near enough. We basically have picks 12, Norths 19 next year and let’s say pick 15-18 next year. It’s not a lot actually

You realise what North would give for those picks?

You always have to pay substantially over the odds to do a pick swap in this area. We are likely to hold 12 and be done. Cats won’t trade 8 (if they do will be to North who hold 15,17,18 in this draft). Giants probably happy with 7 as they can get a defender to develop. Dees no hope traded up for a good reason probably for Sanders.

Hang onto those future picks. We have some good kids and there were some beauties in the futures game.
Our 12 will probably end up 16 with Walter, Read, Rogers and Croft bid on before our pick. Possibly even McCabe! That's the bad news.
The good news is that there will probably be some decent cattle still left. Murphy, Leake, Tholstrup, DeMattia, Reid, ZZ. A couple of rucks too but I think we'll rookie May.
Maybe not worldbeaters but good enough to draft along with Cleary.

Goldstein is the only Dons recruit I rate and could be the difference in tight games where you need posession of the footy. He's super reliable and can rest up forward and take marks.
He might be at the end of his career but even if he ends up in the VFL as a role model to their upcoming rucks he's still going to be good value.
The rest of the new recruits are very meh.

Exactly that’s why I wouldn’t be against splitting 12 and getting two of the 4 you just listed there. Then add Cleary if we go into deficit next year it’s on our second round pick who cares just pushes it from say 35 to 40 it’s nothing.

Only issue is how does Draper and him work? Another weird as signing. Don’t blame Goldy who probably has a coaching gig lined up there though

So it would push 3rd back.

Honestly love the Essendon chat. It’s exactly the type of downhill skiers I want them to waste their $$$$ TPP warechest on.

Will be defensively weak again next year in transition.

Port knew the deficiencies in Xavier Durrsma's game, he's fumbly at best.

Interesting that the "experts" rate JJ as a good get for us. I wonder if they are correct, or if they don't know much about our existing list, or both. I certainly hope that he turns out to be a good fit and a best 22 player.

He will be early with Mills out, I know we have Sheldrick but Jordan is more likely to get first crack there. I rate the Jordan signing he's the ultimate Mr Fix It, can put him anywhere, he isn't Hewett (sorry Ceasar couldn't resist) but he gives me some of those traits.

We need Head office to get their act into gear and let everyone know what their new selection criteria will be for F/S & Academy picks. Review will be next year so it will impact next years draft.

Gut feeling says all discounts will be removed and lets be real that's the right call, that's where the biggest angst is, it's not the matching it's the discounts.

Remember that one?
This one scares me. Smells of desperation from Horse trying to have one last crack.

trying to flog Wicks off was the most telling sign of Horse having entered desperate and dateless land.

shyte, who knows he may give Wayward a stern look when he continues to lose us games by bottling kicks for goal.

tosh.

Essendon are meme worthy when it comes to the trade period but this year they may have brought in enough fringe to move up and maybe sneak into the eight and heaven forbid win a final. Goldy might be enough to get some good use out of their speed. They have some very good players at half back so I don't see it as too bad of a call to to say they won the trade period. In fact I'd prefer that air of expectation on them so the pressure sits with them to deliver which could see them implode again.

Goldy is head and shoulders ahead of the other imports. (And not just coz he is taller)

McKay could spud it up for McCains

Gresham was third banana behind Higgins and Buttler as an ordinary small forward.

Dursma is slow from leg injuries and a B Grader at best.

Plus the Donnie’s couldn’t get rid of Shiel and have massively overpaid Parish who hits targets on a random basis and the only time he ran backwards to defence was coz he was lost at the time.

I've seen a few aforementioned "experts" saying he's a good pick up because he'll be a straight-swap for the loss of Stephens...

...who wasn't even in the team most weeks.
