Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

Appreciate the effort but it’s all subjective as to how much those players will improve their teams.

No one would have dreamt of Bobby Hill winning the Norm Smith this time last year

May I point out my post from the last trade period

People on here have no idea, Hill is a smart trade will probably be BOG in next years Grand Final

Sorry, still not following. Don't we have 3 list spots available with Murray upgrade currently taking one?
Presumably would need to delist a main list player to use all 3 picks was my understanding.

We will have rookie list space for Borlase regardless?
I would have thought delist and rookie Borlase is the only realistic option.

Do the same with e.g. Hammill if we want a third main list spot. Only problem with that is it reduces our available rookie list spots and thus our chances of finding the next Rutten, Murray etc.
For the record though, this all depends on the Crows rating of the draft. They may only have 15 players they would consider drafting if available. So that 3rd pick may not be enticing at all.
I reckon if you matched our top 15 with the top 15s from all other clubs, there'd be a good chance at least one of our top 15 would still be there at 20.

I still think we'll do a pick trade and reduce our picks to 2, though.

Might be having 2 different discussions here. I’m not looking at who I would trade in, I’m merely saying I believe those clubs have improved their sides, how much time will tell, but at least they’ve made efforts to

According to most on this board, Port have made nothing but mistakes the last few years with their trading and yet they’re 3 from 4 top 4 minor round finishes. They’ve definitely failed in finals, but they continue to assemble a list capable of getting there. I don’t think anybody should be criticising the strategy. They’ve had numerous misses, but they have a crack.

Yep - so you don't think we made efforts AND we all admit that we do not have a clue if any of these changes will improve anyone?

Of course they improved their list. 3 of the 4 traded in will be walk up starts in the 23. If they weren’t acquired, they’d be replaced with fairly mundane draft picks who wouldn’t help whilst in a supposed window.

Yep. Esava is another Aliir but not as good. Both do their best work as interceptor defenders. Same with zerk thatcher.
Esava was traded in, to free up Aliir to play his original interceptor role that he was traded into the Club for.

I'm not sure 10 and 20 would get you 8, to be fair.

Depends entirely on the club’s talent orders. If you’re about to pick at 8 and you’ve got 3 that are a coin toss and someone offers 10 and 20 then it’s a free pick. That’s how Reid or Hamish explained it when we traded down and got McAsey. We had a group of about a handful that we couldn’t really separate, so the extra pick is a effectively a gift.

Im not 100% convinced Port have improved their best 22, in many ways I feel like Port have gone with a like for like replacement of players in terms of skill without actually improving the quality of their 22.

Sure Esava may free up Aliir, but coaches have also come up with strategies to make those intercepting players more accountable.

As a big forward, having Esava instead of Aliir match up on you, is more or less a like for like. Neither is elite.
Who knows though, they might go left field and run Alir as the CHB and use bzt as their intercept so rat and alir take tge big forwards.

I think structurally they have improved with these guys and they are very much upgrades on jonas and clurey etc

So now they have 2 interceptors & BZT as a lockdown who isn't big enough to play on the really big forwards...

What about essentially swapping draft hands with them.. 10+14+20 for 8+25+f3..if the player we really want is there at 8

There’d have to be a fair variance between the player you’d take at 8 and the next 2 on your order. And you’d have to be very confident that you’re all but flawless in your ratings and systems.

Port had the worst 1 on 1 defensive players in 2023 so they went and traded in an interceptor that can't play 1 on 1 and a lock down defender that also can't play 1 on 1. Should be interesting!

You're on the Burgess bandwagon then?

Pick 35 wasn’t it?

We took Harrison Wigg, but we’re apparently hoping Maynard would still be there.
Yep. A downgrade fron 35 to 47 moved them from 14 to 10. Thanks. Just checked.

That's fascinating, isn't it. I wonder why prices have changed so much?

Western Bulldogs paying three 1sts for a pick 4 is going to throw the pricing out for a while I think. Clubs have unrealistic expectations of what you should pay for an upgraded pick - and clubs are paying it.

What a strange angle.

So they improved their list by trading in players that are not 1st year draftees? No other analysis needed?
