Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

Whoah .... I'm not having a fight with you.

WTF?
I don’t know how many more times I’ve had to make myself clear, you’re peddling a point I’m not making. I looked at the ins and whether I believe those teams have improved for 2024 i terms of their premiership chances, the teams I’ve listed I believe they have and given that’s their objective, good on them, they aren’t rebuilding so picks mean little.

I’ve tried to leave it at that. I’ve been accused on here of not letting an argument go and I’m not trying to continue it.

Bizarrely, that year it technically still was first round

So yes.
"First round" has little to no meaning anymore as it can stretch into the low to mid 20s these days.

Statistically picks 1 to 5 have a hugely greater success rate than picks from 10 onwards. Statistacally a mid to late first rounder is barely more likely to guarantee a good player than a pick in the 30s yet people treat it like its something special.

Low to mid 20s feels generous. The first round made it to pick 27 in 2010 and 30 in 2011 (because of all the concessions that had to be made for Gold Coast and GWS). 26 picks in the first of 2020 is the current record for a season without a new team, and we're guaranteed to at least match that this season.

Jeez George - we are talking possible slight improvements by trades for most of those teams. Which player would you have wanted in the list of traded players below. I'd take McAdam :)

You’re at the bargaining stage I see ;)

May I point out my post from the last trade period
Hats off. :thumbsu:

His small forward craft this year for the Pies has been exceptional.

I rated Bobby too even before the GF, its a shame that the bookies didnt, he was paying $101 to win the Norm Smith.:rainbow:

So now they have 2 interceptors & BZT as a lockdown who isn't big enough to play on the really big forwards...
Port are trying to do their best imitation of Lever and May defensively. It may help in many H&A games, but the strategy will come unfold again in Finals and it will be beautiful to view. In any case, I genuinely dont like Port's chances of making it.

Opposition coaches just need to isolate these defenders so it becomes a 1 on 1 contest,

Always. Until I build that Time Machine or somehow get influence over the club … that is my most obvious way forward without going all the way over to Ice Hockey as my sport of choice

I wouldn’t say I’m excited by our list changes (love you Chris, miss you already Shane & Tom) but I’m not at the burn the place down point over it either.

Living in hope that we have turned a corner as a team is not ideal. Will be much happier when I see that we have more than just put the indicator on

Of course, the driver of the bus will get his mandatory AFC license renewal early in 2024 … which I think is unnecessary. I agree with all the discussion around waiting on giving Nicks more years.

i am one that believes Port’s trade strategy will ultimately fail, not because they are Port but because it will ultimately fail.

Port’s strategy is all in on the now, it’s about chairing that premiership, they have traded in some gaps to fill but traded in players that didn’t didn’t have huge impacts at their previous clubs.

Both Solo and Sweet were not in their best 22 sides, Ratugolea was dropped on multiple occasions and BZT won the reverse coleman for most goals kicked in him as a defender in 2023.

Yes it plugs gaps but does it really improve the team.

If port doesn’t rise with this approach what next?

They have invested so much draft capital in trades over the past 4-5 years, premiership lists are built through the draft with class added through trade and FA, I can’t see this in Port’s approach.

What I can see thought is Hinkley getting the boot in two years and the next coach needing to fix a list that has had zero draft investment over several seasons, this rebuild will be as challenging as any clubs in recent years including west coast

Ken will be sacked mid season.

Im just waiting for the fixture to be released before making my predictions and pin point after which round.

However, in fairness to the Coke addict, he has been there for 10+ years and Ive been making these predictions for the past few years.

With Rozee, Butters, JHF, Bergman, Georgiadis, Marshall, Houston, SPP, Sinn and Georgiadis there's enough there to build a team in the future.
If JHF, Rozee and Butters all stay A grade midfielders or better then they will be highly competitive.

I do agree though that in 3 years time their list decisions will come back to bite them for a short period.
It will be in that period where they will need to rebuild and by the time that group is ready Rozee, Butters and JHF will be approaching 30.

Always interested in a F1 from the Eagles - as you say its highly likely to fall within that top 5 area

Whether its for Draper is another story

So what you want for it :D

I actually think Soldo is a handy acquisition, and will make their already excellent midfield even more potent. The rest though...

A defence in which either Ratugolea or BZT have to take the number one forward will never be elite.

he averages 10 touches and 29 got our a game

i’m not seeing a big uplift here, I actually think Sweet probably has the higher ceiling but again either player is not going to take them to a flag

Fox had the Essendon v GCS match on yesterday. BZT was actually very good that match.

Soldo will do the job imho. Not a mug of a player.
