Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Dunno, probably just a fringe player. I don't remember him either, just reading the Wikipedia page. Looked up the games he played and I remember every single other player on the field. B&F at Peel in 1998, then rookie drafted to Freo in 1999, played 2 senior games in Rd 3/4 and then the rest of the year at South, then delisted end of 1999 and went back to Peel.
He was a fringe player but was solid build, not exceptionally fast or with great endurance. Did have good skills and stood out at Peel because of this - at AFL level he really was not anywhere near the level. His son is far quicker, certainly leaner but reckon dad had better skills. Bolton jnr however is a far more freakish talent.

I wonder if Ross Lyon ever had this conversation with Nathan Fyfe:

Still think the biggest mistake was not drafting Ben King, (instead of Hogan)when Andy Brayshaw was his captain in U18 level and they are good mates

Yep. Ben King for Neale should have happened.

Second to that, IMO, we should be getting games into the 10+ year combination of Amiss, JVR and Jackson. JVR was right there for the taking. WA boys, Amiss and JVR in their 2nd years showing how good they will be.

Why are our forward lines always cobbled together afterthoughts since the heady days of Pav, Sharpshooter Mayne, Ballas, and Walters 10 years ago? Adelaide shows that you are always in with a chance when you have a super forwardline even if it has to become a shootout because your backline isn't as strong. Our version shows that you can have a great backline but it can't save a game when you are never really confident of where your goals are going to come from.

I totally agree re the forwardline and its importance and we've neglected it via the draft for many years but I have no problem with us taking Erasmus over JVR. We still needed quality mids so to take a forward and a mid made sense. Having said that, I believe we're now set for mids and the drafting focus this year should be all about forwards.

And, who knows we might get JVR back so will have both Raz and JVR. Could even have JVR's bro.

I don't think people will be too disappointed that Erasmus is on our list within two years tbh.

JVR was never in the frame for a top ten pick. This boards obsession with any WA KPF that isn't complete dog**** doesn't change that. Literally no where else in Australia was he in the conversation.

It'd be like saying West Coast should've drafted Nat Fyfe at pick 7 instead of Brad Sheppard even though Fyfe went at pick 20. Hindsight is great.

what's hindsight got to do with it? Plenty on here including myself were arguing around the draft to take JVR and Amiss and shore up the forwardline talls for a decade. We were repeatedly told that picking him top 10 was too high. He's now showing himself to be one of the best 2nd year tall forwards going around with big potential. So all it showed was that we were right and and a bunch of so-called experts who think they have drafting down to a fine art have egg on their faces.

No one in this country apart from posters on this board (public opinions anyway) thought he was in consideration for our pick.

For every JVR there's ten Mason Shaw's.

I'm slightly obsessed with the idea of Brayshaw playing wing given his skill set and our severe lack of quality in that area.
I think this is spot on. In the end 3 players rotating through the wings is ideal. I would introduce Brayshaw to the wing position and rotate Johnson with him and O'Driscoll.

There's some great dynamics there.

Rules re non Victorian clubs

West Australian and South Australian teams[edit]

In addition to the standard eligibility rules, the South Australian and Western Australian clubs have a modified rule in place with eligibility to be determined by a certain number of games played for specific sides in SANFL or WAFL, if those games were played prior to the club entering the AFL.[5][10] Specifically:

Until 2006 these rules would only apply during the first 20 years of the club's existence in the AFL. This 20-year provision was removed because it was felt to be unfair if a player had a son later in life.[11]

These rules have been frequently criticised by non-Victorian AFL club officials as a "grandfather–son" rule[12] that is biased against them.[13] For example, the Adelaide Crows have not had a single father–son selection in 21 years, and missed out on Bryce Gibbs despite his father's 253-game career with SANFL club Glenelg from 1984 to 1994. Gibbs was subsequently selected by Carlton with the first overall pick in the 2006 AFL Draft.

He could play similarly to Walsh at Carlton.

Almost the same skill sets.

Erasmus is super young. He is 2 months older than Josh Draper and is 1.5 years younger than NOD, and 8 months younger than Matt Johnson.

This kid will be a star. Finds the footy so easily and already a biggish midfielder. He tackles ferociously. Loved his game on the weekend. Ran really hard and didn’t get brushed aside despite being I think the youngest on the field.

I’m not sure JVR is anything special. I’d like him on the list. But not at the expense of Erasmus, Amiss or Johnson. Short sighted to believe so, particularly as our midfield is actually pretty thin and needs both Johnson and Erasmus to become top end AFL players.

Eh, he was definitely talked about for our 2nd pick

Amiss wasn't even near our first pick until a month before the draft, then he moved up the boards

Name one place that isn't this board and within two months of the draft.

If it exists please link me to said article.

Where players were rates 12 months out from the draft means absolutely **** all to what happens on draft night.

Just draft his brother SVR (looking a good player in his own right anyway )and JVR ‘s a Monty to come back to us when his contracts up.

I just hope by that stage Bell’s been ****ed off or someone else is in charge of list management so we don’t get bent over by Melbourne again.
