Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

The club had to back Hamling in to be a good depth KPD if he was to still be on the list. Let’s face it if Hamling gets to say 80% of the player he was he’s probably the best defender in the AFL that’s outside his clubs best 22.

Yes we were playing a scratch match today but I thought I saw Hamling get beaten far too easily today tbh.

It might come back to bite us in hindsight but for me the list management decision makes sense.

I assume we’re talking mature aged depth because drafting a KPD with our top pick and getting another one as a Cat B is addressing the future.
Hamling fan here but he was bad. Didn't help that nobody could be bothered intercepting.

We also have Hughes on the list who can play tall, as can both Chapman and Ryan in a role reshuffle.

After that if it came to a KPD injury crisis, I would rather give a game in defence to Treacy, or a debut to Draper. Try Jackson in a different role protecting the attacking ball. MSD is also available to us.

I mean, we would be talking about both Pearce and Cox going down which effectively jeapordises our season.

Remember what happened in the 2020 season.....

Alex Pearce and Joel Hamling didn't play a game. Griffin Logue played the 1st 4 or 5 games in 2020 and his season was stuffed with injuries.

Brennan cox had to play full back.

Then a 187cm Luke Ryan or a 190cm Tobe Watson or a skinny 192 cm Taylin Duman had to play Centre half back.

Whichever kpd we would have taken in the draft would still have been behind the suggestions I made in my post though. Our next options aren't Duman and Watson. They are Hamling, Hughes, Davies and Draper and apart from Hughes they are all genuine KPD height.

Plus in 2020 the MSD didn't exist.

Speaking of the mid season draft...

I remember the 2021 mid season draft when a lot of dockers fans on here went nuts that Peter Bell didn't decide to choose some one in that mid season draft.

Some said it was for financial reasons. I thought that was a weak excuse because Freo made $2.43 million dollars in profit in 2022 and 1.55 million dollars in profit in 2021.

I don’t think anyone said we didn’t pick someone because of finances but rather that (effectively) it would be pissing money up against the wall to do so.

Financial reasons is salary cap right?

True.... But if there was a need. Might as well take it.

If there was a mature aged ruckman that's 21-25 years old in the WAFL, why not take the chance and give the dude an 18 month contract?

If it doesn't work, at least we tried.

We still struggled to score goals last season, despite making finals.

It's not like Freo didn't use 1st round picks to draft or trade players in our 2016-21 rebuild. Most of them sadly didn't work out.

It's also football department spending, which only loosely related to total organisation financial result because most of that profit came from members and game attendances and we can't spend more on football department ventures without incurring large costs.
Yep that's also true.

We did pay out the final year of Ross Lyon contract which was 1 million a year.

You would assume Freo will turn a profit again in 2023 keeping the ticket prices the same.

Hoping our crowd number increases too. Freo did play finals and played some decent footy last season too.

We also have 193cm Heath Chapman who played KPD in Colts with West Perth. He has added good size over the summer.

Why are people surprised Henry's name was on the whiteboard? Young specifically said he's up for grabs particularly if Freo got Jeremy Sharp as he wasnt getting a game. The club said no. Whether he stays at Freo just depends on whether he's getting a game

My take away from watching the player agent produced documentary was that young looked genuinely stressed out that lobb wasn’t going to get traded and might think long and hard next time he tries to railroad freo into a trade.

I didn't watch the show. Watching Colon Young would just piss me off. The guys a flog. Just reading posts on here about a flog who sounds like he only does things in his best interest through the players careers makes me hate him even more.

Tbf Colin Young has been pretty consistent in saying Liam Henry's goal is to play every game for Freo this year. Think his name may have been on the board as us getting Jeremy Sharp would've shown we're not overly committed to giving a shot to Henry in the best 22.

Thing is Henry has to earn his spot in the best 22. Getting Sharp wouldn't have overly changed that situation as he'd be in the same situation - he'd just be move competition but not someone Henry can't get ahead of if he's good enough.

Henry has had plenty of opportunities this pre season

He just needs to play good enough football to break in and keep his spot

He would be my number 1 target now Shai re-signed with Richmond. I think we're missing that explosive smaller-forward/x-factor type....and with Walters not long off retirement. If it drags on and he doesn't re-sign with Melbourne....my only concern is, how could we land him if he's interested in a return home?! Melbourne are bastards to deal with and would want a good deal and we have f*** all. You'd think West Coast would be more in the box seat as they'll have higher picks. But man.......let's hope he doesn't re-sign, keep things interesting

He's South Australian*, so the Adelaide clubs will have the go-home factor.

*I stand corrected, he is WA born. Starting playing in SA from age 16. His uncle Byron Pickett is from SA. Interesting that the article above says he is South Australian, and apparently Port Adelaide have been actively trying to get him since last year.

ah, didn't know that. My understanding was he was a West Aussie. It's not set in stone I guess - even if he left, we saw Bobby Hill go to Collingwood after all and WA players like Lobb, Logue and Acres leave for 'better pastures'. Equalling better money.

I personally think he would be a crucial get, it's just how the hell we'd get him....probably have to be a sacrifiical lamb you'd think. And...it's Melbourne.

Watch this space!*

*Probably ask for a trade to Carlton

As it stands, Henry is pretty much the no.1 seed for a wing position.

Every time I've seen him he's worked his guts out to run selflessly and structurally beneficial lines, navigated packs really well and not shirked the contest. If he keeps all that up, it's his position to lose and the club should really be putting a juicy contract in front of him not too far into the season (especially given there are no foreseeable Luke Jackson-type wrinkles for list management this year).
