Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

I just hope Duursma is as good as the experts are saying .. as I’ve mentioned before, another HF is the last thing we need unless this guy is a star.
As a list need & flexibility & to * up Wet Toast good & proper Curtain for me with McKercher

Surely after the Sheez experience you get that we may well not be drafting him as a half forward?

Just because one club is prepared to use its F1 in this draft doesn't mean it is right for us to do so as well. Our circumstances are very different in that West Coke only has #1 and not much more and we have FIVE first rounders. With all our draft capital there is no need for us to burn our F1 by overpaying for another player in the 2023 draft.

I also suspect that WC rate Curtin higher than North does, which is why they are prepared to stick their neck out. There is also the return home factor that I think is more of a threat with Curtin than it for instance is with Reid, which I believe lessens the value of drafting him. I also hate the idea of diminishing our draft hand by overpaying for Reid who I think is overhyped. That doesn't mean that I think he won't be a good player, but I doubt he'll be an outstanding one.

Contrary to your belief, I don't think our rebuild can be completed in the 2023 draft and we will still need to have a strong position in next year's draft to continue the rebuild. Not all of our picks in the teens this year will succeed, so there will be ongoing list needs that need to be addressed in future drafts. Perhaps we will be able to invest in targeted free agency acquisitions from 2025 onwards to help us become a contender on the back of all the high end talent we've accumulated over the last few years.

The two potential trades I can see value in is using two of the late teens picks to get another pick in the top 10 if it gets us O'Sullivan, or to potentially trade away one of our late teens picks for someone's F1 + a pick in the late 20s or early to mid 30s.

That's my view as well, especially as that pick is likely to be around Pick 3 to Pick 6. As things stand, five picks in the first round, noting that 15, 17 and 18, will become 20, 22 and 23, should see us getting at least two very good footballers and hopefully the rest handy at worst.

Adding those to Sheezel, Wardlaw and George (if he eventually has a bit of luck on the injury front), I've forgotten who else we got last year, plus at least two good picks in the first and second round next year and Stephens from Sydney, will mean we will have 11 very promising players drafted/traded in over a three year period.

There will be no more handouts (or departures like McKay that will give us something as good as Pick 3), so now is the time when we have to consolidate on what we have and what we are going to bring in and hope that this combination drives us up the ladder and eventually back into finals contention.

If you believe what you read, I'm starting to think that Curtin will be one of our first two picks along with McKercher. In which case we won't get Duursma, and so the only thing that I would consider is seeing if a couple of 15, 17 and 18, might get us a pick that we could use to get Sanders. There is something about the way that he moves, that I really like.

Number of phantom draft links to NM:

5x - Kerch, Duurs
4x - n/a
3x - Hardeman, Dawson
2x - DeMattia, Green, Edwards
1x - Schoenmaker, Collard, Zakostelsky

So for those of us in the Curtin cheer squad, I think at this stage we've gotta accept its only a very outside chance we get our man.

With Dawson and Hardeman shaping up as the most likely among the end of first rounders, it'll be interesting to see whether the club opts to service a different position with the third pick.

With that in mind, I'm a bit surprised at how little representation Collard has had, given that "forward pressure" has been one of the key recurring themes of our needs.

Its also interesting that rucks feature in four out of the five phantom drafts. Has Clarko ever taken a ruck in the first round before?

Collard meeting in Perth may not have gone well. FWIW I think the club will be much more open with the media on who we take with 2 and 3 vs 15, 17 & 18.

One of the concerns re Clarksons game plan from a recently departed player, is lack of elite footskills and run in the back half to execute it.

Expect that to be right at the top of our priority list.
Agree, one major issue has been our overall lack of high level decision makers and players with elite foot skills. We are hopefully remedying this and should be a high priority.

Let's just draft s**t hot footballers and then figure out where they stand on the field later

Exactly. Those kinds of talents can play multiple roles as is

I agree. Though I think this is another reason to go Curtin, as he is rare tall with excellent foot skills. Or if we take Duursma, he may be playing back. It will be interesting to see how we organise the backline next year. I assume it will be some sort of zone, but who is in it is a bit of a mystery.

WC trading their F1 for Curtin is risky from a PR perspective.

If they win 2 games next year, while Curtin is fairly average for a 7th pick first year player, and they don't have that light at the end of a tunnel of getting pick 1 ... thats where people start losing their jobs.

They'll be begging for pick 1 as a PP.

So if we take McKercher and Curtin that leaves :

Duursma
Watson
Sanders
Caddy
Wilson
Windsor
Leake
O'Sullivan
Tholstrup

for the clubs to select with their first available pick. So who takes who and what club might trade out if the player they are after are not still there?

l'm still thinking Cats and GWS are the 2 picks that we have a chance of getting...

They'll win more than 2. I'm expecting a bounce back

Its clearly the plan - trade it out so they can ask for priority help next year.

Me reading another post about why we should take an undersized WA backman over the ultra skilled Victorian kid who is clearly the next Harry Sheezel.

Every side is supposed to be improving.

They hope to have Ryan and McGovern fit all year and they add Reid and Flynn. Any other big improvements?

They might be better or they might struggle to win a game. Trading your F1 makes that second option a very bad place to be.

I don't think WC will go that bad and expect them to win more than 3 games next year, but even if they finish last, the best they can hope for is a round 2 and a round 3 priority pick that they must trade away. The AFL has set a low ceiling on the assistance it is willing to provide based on what we've received. Even then WC may not come into consideration for assistance yet because they won the flag as recently as 2018. Having traded away their F1 would probably also count against them as I'd expect the AFL to adopt a "you made your bed, now you have to lie in it" attitude.

Can’t happen though. Not after what the AFL gave us.
