Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

I was really keen on adding another elite runner with pick 14. Someone like Wilson, Freijah or Windsor.

With Stephens & Fisher joining us I think that need for outside run is less of a priority. In the event we keep 14 & 19 I’m tipping we are going to go tall.
And this may also be the rationale behind trading up for pick 1 to take Reid instead of McKercher with pick 2.

So what’s the big rumour about Edwards?

It's October and West Coast is at the bottom of the ladder.

It's a strange historical correlation with rumors of bad behavior, missed club meetings and injuries which preclude them from athletic tests.

No one attempts to stash and hide local players like West Coast does when they are down the bottom.

The other factor at play here is Thursfield.

Even though Rawlings and Clayton will be involved intimately in list strategy, discussion etc.

The final call on the talent ID of the draft board falls with Thursfield as the National Recruiting Manager.

We really have no evidence of the type of players he likes etc, as he's never headed up a teams draft before as the No.1 man other than this seasons midseason draft, which is no evidence at all really.

You can only really imagine he has been molded by Matthew Clarke, who very much emphasis foot speed and kicking ability as the top non negotiables on his board. If they don't have either of those, they are right down the list.

Clarke's top 30 picks as Richmonds NRM since he took the role:

Shai Bolton (29)
Jack Higgins (17)
CCJ (20)
Noah Balta (25)
Collier-Dawkins (20)
Thomson Dow (21)
Gibcus (9)
Tom Brown (17)
Tyler Sonsie (28)

Pretty much 90% of thatlists are super athletic types, if that is any clue to Thursfields taste in players.

All I can say, people stressing themselves out if we do ‘something crazy with picks 2 & 3’ have to remember;

1. We haven’t got pick 3 yet.. and if/when we do..

2. It’s only because a line-n-length backman has jumped ship at the perfect time for us while we’re down the bottom of the ladder.

If we traded him in the open market before FA he would be worth a pick in the late teens.

To me pick 3, 2024 picks 19 & 20 are all absolute free hits.

If we can cleverly use a combo of these free hits (obviously pick 2 will be involved) to get Harley Reid - the most talented kid in the game, I’ll ****in fly over and chauffeur him personally to Arden Street straight after his name is called out on draft night!!

Nah, that's a gamblers mentality who wins $10k and considers the $10k a fee hit if they go and lose it.

Pick 3 is absolutely not a free hit once it's sitting in our draft hand.

I'm with ya......but people will say "a small forward just won the Norm Smith". I'd like him, for sure, but not at pick 2 or 3.......better for later on.
I'd love to end up with McKercher, Curtin, Watson. Agree re taking Watson at 2 or 3, but I reckon Curtin is bigger chance to slide and could well be there at GWS 6/7 which will require a lot less than matching the WB GC offer. Target GWS pick, Haynes handy as Logue cover and should still have one of 14 or 19 to take Murphy / Schoenmaker / Leake.

WC Reid
GC Walter
NM McKercher
NM Watson
HA Duursma
WB Sanders
ME Caddy / Curtin
GW Curtin / O’Sullivan / Caddy

In terms of key forwards, who's the most reliable set shot in the draft?

All I can say, people stressing themselves out if we do ‘something crazy with picks 2 & 3’ have to remember;

If we can cleverly use a combo of these free hits (obviously pick 2 will be involved) to get Harley Reid - the most talented kid in the game, I’ll *in fly over and chauffeur him personally to Arden Street straight after his name is called out on draft night!!

They are "free hits" that we can ill afford to waste. They are also 'free hits' that in all likelihood will never be granted to us again.

We absolutely have to make best use of them. Don't just burn them because we got them for nothing/on the cheap.

If the draft was uncompromised and we picked purely on your rankings and assuming we get McKay compo at pick 3, we'd end up with

Reid
McKercher
Murphy
Hall
Sanchez

Not too bad at all. Plenty of other choices available from pick 14 onwards as well.

And acknowledging by us getting pick 3 the draft is compromised... the point though; is more the impact of academies and father sons.

Edit - noting i haven't accounted for picks getting pushed back...

My September Rankings:

Will do an updated list & rankings post the combine. This list is missing a few players like: Joe Pike, Will Dawson, Charlie Edwards, Zane Zakostelsky ect.

They are "free hits" that we can ill afford to waste. They are also 'free hits' that in all likelihood will never be granted to us again.

We absolutely have to make best use of them. Don't just burn them because we got them for nothing/on the cheap.
You've completely misread my post, punch yourself in the balls..

Nah, that's a gamblers mentality who wins $10k and considers the $10k a fee hit if they go and lose it.

Pick 3 is absolutely not a free hit once it's sitting in our draft hand.
No they're free hits to use on upgrading to a future superstar..

In terms of key forwards, who's the most reliable set shot in the draft?

Jed Walter, but he isn't in the open talent pool.

Of the key forwards that are available I'd say that with Logan Morris has the best/most reliable set shot routine, Riley Weatherill would be next best imo. Luke Lloyd is another that has a good technique. Luker Kentfield seems to make the most of his set shot chances, but he doesn't seem to get a lot of them.

Caddy and Archer Reid are very very inconsistent with the set shot routine. Caddy has the capacity to kick them from anywhere, but he can also spray them from directly in front.

Here is the goal/behind totals for the year at under 18's level for each of the key forward.

Jed Walter: 18.6
Nate Caddy: 25.19
Jordan Croft: 23.17
Archer Reid: 16.11
Logan Morris: 30.15
Riley Weatherill: 37.22
Luke Lloyd: 21.11
Archie May: 29.15
Luker Kentfield: 11.1 (colts), 8.1 (seniors)
Sam Van Rooyen: 22.18
Liam Fawcett: 32.15

I'm still keen on Petric, think he could become a player.
He's a good height, can play forward and back, but looks to have settled down back.

I'd be happy for us to have do a pre-season with us, along with Ethan Phillips. In the hope of being a SPP selection. Don't think he gets taken in ND or rookie draft.

To those having greater knowledge on this stuff than me, what is it about Reid's game that puts him so far ahead of McKercher's game, bearing in mind that speed, contest to contest running and kicking stood out like dogs balls in this year's GF, that we'd pass up on having 2 of the top 3 selections? (assuming we get Band 1)

Looks like some great value options there. Perhaps even another Larkey like draft steal!

Would love to see some footage of Archer May, Riley Weatherill and Luker Kentfield. Having a contested marking key forward would be the perfect compliment to Larkey. For me, I think accuracy in front of goal is critical as Larkey has shown us.

No way know is pick 3 a free hit. Pick 3 is an opportunity to get the 3rd best player in the open pool on draft night. The list of brilliant players taken at pick 3 is extensive from Judd, Martin, Didak and Shannon Grant to Mills, Jackson and Sheezel.

We need to ensure we get maximum value with this gift as history shows that most players taken with this pick will play at least 150 games. We don't want to stuff this up.
Maybe I should've worded it better.

Pick 3 should actually be Pick 18/19/20 because that's all BMac is probably worth on the open trade market.

The fact we've been so shit and ended up second last and the fact the sheer dearth of KPD's this year Bmac has become extremely hot property is the ONLY reason we'll (hopefully) lob pick 3.

Any other year we get buggar all for him and we end up with picks 2, 18ish (Bmac trade), 19 + + so having pick 3 is a luxury and it allows us to be creative with our first two picks to hopefully secure a freak like Harley (pick 2 will be involved) and another gun at pick 3..

That's all I'm sayin..

I'm no expert but he has better hair. At least until he has to cut it off when he gets here.

I'm more confident there is value there for key forwards rather than key defender. The key defender pool gets very shallow very quick this year.

Riley Weatherill thanks to noobermensch
