We should rename Carlton to the reverse Cyril Rioli club.

Unlike Cyril, we get a shit load of disposals, but do absolutely nothing with them.

Collingwood like using the corrodor. If we leave it as open as the Adelaide game, we will get an almighty pantsing.

Pointless exercise but still fun:

Out: Mots, Jsos, Cin, Ed

In: TDK, Boyd, Binns, Martin

Gov Weiters Newman
Doc Young Saad
Binns Cripps Acres
Martin Charlie Cotts
TDK Harry Owies

Pitts Cez George

Boyd Durds Matt K Walsh

Sub: Ollie

Experienced backline, Durds to play short stints at centre bounces, Martin to actually do football for 4 quarters, no mids to play back unless it's Doc.

TDK to stay forward as an aerial threat and can ruck at F50 stoppages only.

Edit: Just take the ****ing game on, only look to tempo if Collingwood kick 2 in quick succession otherwise lets see some derring-do.

Loved your post.

I mean, being human though,
Also means there's a good chance we continue to learn and improve?
So, with TDK,
I don't think we'd want him labelled and stuck in a box with his footy would we?
There's every chance he comes back refreshed and improved in a few areas. Then there is also our weird game plan that hasn't helped.

Maybe if he’d gone away and done well in the vfl you’d have a point.

But he got concussed and hasn’t really done anything in the matches he’s played in.

So he could come back and play ok, but he hasn’t shown anything to indicate he would.

Wasn’t Ed sent to tag Sinclair vs Saints. If so, if the instruction was a close tag hen based on Sinclair’s game, Ed has lost his one and only wood which means he shouldn’t be playing.
My memory is that Ed tagged him with Sinclair at half back in the first half and kept him quiet. Lyon sent Sinclair into the centre in the second half. Not sure if Ed followed him but Sinclair went O.K. in the second half.

A couple of facts about our forward line
- we are ranked in the bottom 10 for points scored, and even that is boosted up because of the west coast game.
- in the Voss era, in games where Curnow or McKay have not kicked 3 or more goals we have only won 3 games of football. They are R1 2022 v RICH, R9 2022 v GWS, and R3 2023 v GWS.
- we have 4 players on our list that have kicked more than 100 goals (Curnow, McKay, McGovern, Martin)

Well and truly time to play McGovern forward. Proven goalkicker, gets goal assists, complements Curnow and McKay and knows how to deliver the ball inside F50. What hurts is that we continue to play either JSOS or TDK who just are not gonna help us with our forward woes. TDK can’t kick and has no forward nous and JSOS has never even kicked 20 goals in a year, and barely has 80 career goals in over 100 games. And play kemp as the intercept who should never have been dropped anyway.

Obviously this isn't gonna fix everything, because we still need guys like Motlop and Durdin to actually pull their finger out instead of being ghosts every game and then popping up with a goal in junk time. Unfortunately though we don't have many smalls on the list replace them with so they probably won't get dropped, and jack martin probably needs more than a game against a bunch of 17 year olds to return. However, what we do have is a genuine 3rd goalkicking forward, and its time to actually make full use of this and give curnow and mckay some much needed support.

The boys have been waiting for this one since round 23 last year. This is the game that kickstarts our season.

It's either our grand final. Pretty much every Collingwood and Essendon game has been since the Pagan, Ratten and Malthouse era has been and we play exceptionally well then fall back to playing exceptionally poorly.

Or this is a game where we get a mother of a belting and that is the reality check we need and we start playing like we have nothing to lose again and start playing more high risk high reward footy and start winning again.

Or it's a game that solidifies our game style and that either brings about a big buy in and we start winning ugly most week or we continue on the same course.

So much can happen. Sydney next week at the SCG will be the game that tells the story.

Pies' last three opponents and their scores that game:
7.13 (GWS)
6.12 (Swans)
7.16 (Crows)
Total: 20.41

We might have to win with just behinds...
Which Daicos gets 80% of the kickouts for. He really does have some over inflated stats. Add this to giving the ball to him when he isnt in a better position and I can understand why teams havent gone all out on tagging him week in week out. DeGoey and Pendelbury are the ones who I think present more of an impact. Yes Daicos uses the ball well but I also think it has been slightly overblown. Might be just my refusal to like a Collingwood player though

For me I would make three changes. Fisher needs to come back in. Everyone had him as the source of the problems but the last two weeks have shown that not to be the case. He also had 21 touches and generated 4 shots on goal in his last senior game, albeit against weak opposition. He can replace Motlop or Durdin. I like them both but they are not giving us enough to have the both of them play particularly with Owies back. We just look sub standard without a second ruck so TDK comes back in replacing either JSOS or Young. Its a balancing act in defence if Young comes out, but the Pies don't have a lot of height back there. Jack Martin is likely to have more impact as a sub than Ed.

In - TDK, Fisher, Martin (sub)
Out - Durdin/Motlop, JSOS/Young, E. Curnow

Reckon he might have a ginger haired running machine within touching distance of him all Sunday afternoon. Matt C doesn't need to do that push and shove rubbish - just try and make him accountable for every possession.

100%. Adelaide missed a real opportunity in using Keays to hurt him the other way like they did to us when he plays on Saad. Daicos has less than zero defensive thought. Play through his man for the love of god. And agreed, Cottrell is the guy to do it.

Nope.
We got back into the game because the three smalls dragged us back in as much as anyone.
IMO It's clear Owies, Durds and Mots need to play together.

Sinclair had close to 20 touches to half time off half back. If that’s a shut down job then I must be missing something. There was also a play just before half time when Ed basically stopped running coz he was so gassed and Sinclair just slipped away with the ball. No thanks.

I see GWS won contested ball by +6, and lost by 65.

Seems like something Voss would be hanging his hat on in similar circumstances (which will probably be this time next week).

I’ve come to the conclusion contested ball is the most useless stat if you can’t kick the ball, other sides are happy for us to win the clearances so we just give it back to them.
We continue to essentially clear it for the opposition.

Except we clear it to a player from the other team in a paddock of space.

Tdk hasn’t played for 3 weeks and Fisher didn’t play last week. I’m not sure how those selections could be justified.

I can see there being no changes except Boyd for Ed as the sub as sadly IMO Ed is finished.

Ideally Martin plays 2s next week to put pressure on Motlop and Durdin. Tdk and Fish also need good games in the 2s.

I watched the flogpies win yesterday, and the biggest surprise of all is that Big Cox has surprisingly turned into a decent footballer.

I am toying with the idea of suggesting playing H in the ruck against Cox. He is roughly the same height, is far more athletic, faster, and has better endurance. H goes wherever Cox goes, negating his marking around the ground/in the goalsquare and then drags him deep into our F50 when the time is right. Pitto can play virtual 2nd ruck/decoy forward. We lose almost nothing by not playing H forward, as his goal kicking confidence is shot to pieces anyway.

People will say H is not good in the ruck. Neither is Cox, but Cox is a pressence around the ground, and H is even more of a threat/better footballer. H is a pretty good defensive player for his size, way better than Cox, who wouldn't have a clue. It might even instill some much needed confidence into big Harry.

It's a radical thought, but I reckon it could just possibly work.

Thoughts folks?

Ed Curnow possibly the worst choice for sub in the current competition.

Serious question, does anyone give us even the slightest chance of winning this game?

Cotts is the perfect match up, has the legs to go with him & the mongrel, strength & size to hammer him at every opportunity. Let’s see how he goes with someone he can’t outwork but is harder/stronger & keen to show it. Cotts would love the opportunity to go after him.
I’d definitely be giving Cotts first crack at N.Daicos, can hurt him goal side if the opportunity arises, maybe Doc if it doesn’t go our way?!

So what you are saying is that Sinclair who had 27 touches for the entire game had only 7 in the second half when moved onto the ball despite the commentators saying that he helped turned the game in the second half?

Pretty poor coaching by Lyon to move someone on track for 40 touches.

I'm in the process of heading to Darwin but will check the quarter stats and get back to you.

agree with all of that Jim.

so What would you do?
Make quicker decisions when you have the numbers in an area forward of the ball or take a shot before you're left with no space to manouvre.

Defensively, just don't overcommit in either direction of play. That would be the gist.

Probably would wind up tagging Dacos, or at least more tightly zoning him out constantly so they're force to use other options in transition.

Which do you see as indispensable- Motlop with his 8 touches and no goals or Durdin with his 10 touches and one goal?

Don't get me wrong I like both players. However I think that the issue us our structure and the hit and hope way we deliver the ball up forward.

If we don't change things up it's hard to see how we can better outcomes.
