Setterfield would have been a perfect match up for Dawson.

Very frustrating when we think about what we allowed to let go for nothing. He couldn’t have wanted that much money. We let him go to create cap space for TDk who at the moment deserves about 350. Not the rubbish numbers being floated around.
Setterfield...... seriously.....

Agreed - I didn't like the selected team (but was dissuaded from posting by the general positivity of the Preview thread); it wasn't balanced. No problem with bringing in Walsh, Kennedy and Acres, but we needed to bite the bullet and drop at least two midfielders to make room for them (rather than just one). Losing Docherty obviously hurt us in terms of leadership, but also versatility, being one of a relatively small number of players in our side that is genuinely proficient in more than one position (having kick-started us as a midfielder in Q3 vs North).

Plus, there must have been genuine doubt about McGovern throughout the lead-up - it's hard to believe that losing him in the warm-up was a total bolt from the blue. In that context, it's hard to understand why Plowman was the sole defender in the emergencies, given that the selected 22 was already one defender short. I cannot pretend to hold an informed opinion on Plowman v Kemp v Cincotta, but I reckon we need speed coming out of D50 (whether Saad is fit next week or not), and if Cincotta offers that, it's time to get him in.

Partly I just want to see us select 22 fit players. Laird thrashed Hewett, and that shouldn't happen if Hewett is fit. That's three poor games in a row: he needs to go out of the side, and get himself right. But smarter match-ups would help as well: I'm no coaching genius, but even going into the game, I'd have played Ed Curnow on Dawson, and Kennedy forward. Even if that meant rotating Cerra and Silvagni off half-back, it couldn't possibly have turned out any worse!
Kennedy to HB? Like wtf?

Cripps on Dawson...odd.

Plow before Cinc or Kemp reeks of conservatism.

TDK showing more and more he ain't going to be a 1st ruck...

I reckon both Cripps and Hewett (his hand presumably) are carrying injuries.....

JSOS....losing faith frankly.

Different scenarios. Setters was always going to get a better deal and more opportunities elsewhere, biggest difference was he was OOC, while Dow is still on over 500K+

Finished last year in great form. Kept Oliver from destroying us. Shut down De Goey. Has started this year in good form. He’s a nice size and can run. So yeah, would have been a good match up for Dawson for sure.
It's classic "oh if only we had" fantasy. You have zero idea if Setterfield the flake would have made the slightest difference against a red hot Dawson. Never seen such a middling player get talked up so much. The gap between your best and worst is drifting.

Didn't mind Plowman as a late change for McGovern, but I would also have preferred to see one of Cincotta or Kemp in the 22 to begin with (neither adequate as a Docherty replacement, but we had to try). Alongside the 3 ins we did have. For what it's worth, I'd have retained Ed and made Fisher the sub (with Honey nowhere), but obviously that was never going to happen in reality.

I am a bit more bullish on De Koning than most - yes, he is not a first ruck yet, but I still think he will get there. I don't think people have given enough credit to his opponent - O'Brien is a fine player who knows exactly what he can and can't get away with, and he demonstrated his superiority on Thursday night. Can De Koning do better against Rowan Marshall? I say yes.

But the most frustrating aspect for me is the selection of half-fit players based on their injury-free ceiling. There is not one player in our side who is good enough for AFL at 60-70% fitness - Cripps included, and we have known that since the Teague era (when we finally rested him, we won!). I get that Dow might not have all the answers we need, but if he's fitter than Hewett, get him in there!

might explain a few things about Dow eh?
I mean if that’s true I give up. He’s never shown anything that warranted a deal like that. I can’t figure out when he would have been offered that.

Media history says he signed a 3 year extension in 2018 that took him through to 2022. I presume that deal would have been decent but I’d have thought well less than 500. But at some point after he signed a one year extension to cover this year too. At no later point did his form warrant anything like what he may have commanded in 2018. So I would have thought it represented yet another drop.

And further if he is indeed on 500 then why the **** do we think we have salary cap issues???? That immediately frees up a chunk of change.

I don't know these details for certain, but I think Dow was contracted 2 years ago, for an extra 2. At that time I think he was in and out of the side, surprised if he got 500 a year when he was a bit 50/50 still on ‘making it’

You seem a bit hot under the collar. You ok?

The average player in AFL is now on around 400K. I would be ecstatic if Dow was even good enough to be called an 'average' player.

I think he means:

why do you bother following the club as he perceives that you see no hope. And if there is no hope what exactly is the point of following the club?
What has long been an issue here is easily phrased as everyone who bothers posting loves the club, everyone is different. People need to respect that others want to process and vent about the compounding 23 years of dog shit differently. It's an outlet.

It seems, that you are extremely unhappy with a large portion of our list and or our output over the last 12 months.

I never said I was unhappy, nor did I say that I see no hope. I simply put down in words what I see and express the club's shortcomings as I see it.

Its funny how people here discuss the Ross Lyon recruitment. Claiming that he wouldnt interview, and the process overrides headhunting

Sayers offered him the job. Board decided via Patty Kinnersley he needed to break his non disclosure agreement on what happened at Freo and thus interview for it.

The issue didnt seem to bother STK.

Whats even funnier, is that no one had an issue Sayers headhunting Clarkson...

Was Clarkson going to be interviewed!? Hmm no

And you know this for a fact?

I think it potentially has a huge impact...when you consider the home gound advantage the Adelaide and Perth sides already have...along with the fact they play home finals on their home deck.

Completely bogus point. Melbourne clubs have very little home ground advantage for most of the season. Granted it's not foreign territory, but when Melbourne teams play other Melbourne teams, it matters little.

When the SA teams play 11 games against an opponent in completely foreign territory, and now a 12th, it has potential to have a major impact.

If they do get to keep this permanently, don't ever whinge about having to play a GF in Melbourne...ever.
I would rather have my home ground as the grand final venue then a random extra match at home a year.

One game means a lot more than the other.

Agree with all of this, however after sleeping on it, I'm not panicking just yet. Let's have some perspective.

1. All clubs bar St Kilda have had a poor loss this year. Adelaide themselves were very disappointing in their loss to GWS, who lost Whitfield and Kelly to injury in the game. They then lost to Richmond by 5 goals at home who we drew with. Point is, everyone is raving about them now but they started the season 0-2 so things can change quickly.

Dogs started 0-2 and got smashed by 50+ points. Have since turned it around with good wins against Brisbane and Richmond.

Collingwood were world beaters then coughed up many soft goal against Brisbane and we haven't heard much about them this week.

Melbourne were very poor in their loss to Brisbane, down by almost 50 points at one stage.

Sydney got smashed by Melbourne.

Geelong were 3-3 after Rd 6 last year.

Let's not overreact to 1 bad loss.

2. We have clear deficiencies we all know about. But these are exaggerated when we simply aren't switched on. We saw last year our best is good enough. I really don't think Melbourne's midfield is much quicker than ours and they are a premiership favourite. Our perceived issue of a slow midfield can be overcome.

3. We rely on our home crowd. Think of the games where we kick 5+ goals in a row and have huge momentum and our tackling pressure is insane. Games like last year vs Sydney and Richmond. They all typically happen at home games, especially Marvel where the crowd noise is electric. It clearly gives our players energy that they seem to lack interstate.
Next week is a 50/50 game the players feed of the energy from our crowds. It will not be a walk in the park for St Kilda.

I dont think we are improving. Despite a few more wins. I dont think there are players on our list that are improving. Yet we turn them out every week expecting a different result. Our midfield is still Patrick Cripps or bust in reality.

Why do i bother offering an opinion? Its a football forum. Thats what its for.
This is the out I give Voss and the coaching group -- they haven't bought in any mids hewitt and cerra were bought before coaches started -- I believe they know they need a burst mid so have hopefully tried this lock down clearance style to play around the midfield we have -
First year
Kennedy surprised and came on fast during pre season so went before setters and hewitt cerra come on a 4 yr deal so you aren't going to not put them in .. hewitt was more defensive mid stroke stopper than a pure mid playing of the back of the stoppage -we been playing curnow that way this year which is strange .. setters had endurance so tried to re tool him he has left play his true position and is holding his own ..
if the answer was on the list we would be using it this up coming trade and drafting period will be very interesting as we have a lot tied up in pieces that aren't critical the Williams purchase for a break away mid that's not a break away mid may come back to hurt a little ..
As arrow said before last period we need run speed and foot skill we still lacking the last two

doesn't matter how quick your mids are if you can't get your hands on the pill.

The slow/quick thing is a red herring.

Our mids simply aren't winning the ball.
