Neale is over $1m this year (or "believed" to be).

There's about a dozen midfielders over $1m already, and that's without many new contracts signed to take advantage of the salary cap jump.

Averaged $800k/yr according to this

Was about to make the exact same point. $1 million/year under the new salary cap isn't the same as it was. More and more players will earn a million plus, and the cost to replace McCluggage with an equivalent player would be at least that much money, plus whatever draft picks were required.

Total no-brainer to re-sign at that price.

Either way, Neale is reported above $1m as of this year.

Would winning the Brownlow hit triggers for more $$$ do you think? Don’t they have incentives built in around AA, B&F, Brownlow etc?

They can. No idea about the details of Neale's deal beyond what's reported.

FATHER-SON UNCHANGED

Clubs expect the AFL will only change its bidding rules for father-son and academy bids next season as Brisbane looks set to scoop the father-son pool this year.

The league will avert the headlines of Gold Coast’s quartet of star academy players this year with fewer academy players likely to be top-five picks.

But Brisbane’s Levi Ashcroft is expected to be a top-three pick as a clone of his brother and No. 1 overall pick Will in a huge boost for the Lions.

‘Devastated’ Dees star retires after brain scan shock
He hasn’t officially committed to the Lions yet but is expected to join his brother, with the Lions also hopeful academy midfielder Sam Marshall has a strong season.

Carlton’s Ben and Lucas Camporeale are not expected to be top-10 picks but are both elite runners who are in the AFL academy.

Adelaide key forward Tyler Welsh, son of Scott, is a quality talent while Gold Coast’s Leo Lombard is a solid talent but not as highly rated as fellow academy talent Jake Rogers, taken at pick 14.

Wasn’t Will taken at number 2?

Just to make it look like we are thieves.

could see melbourne coming very hard for mccluggage with the brayshaw retirement

Angus would not have been on the biggest contract. Based on the recent article on Hugh they’d have to stump up significant overs to get him there, then you have oliver, petracca and Gawn in that midfield on decent money.

Their culture sure is tempting tho!

Lombard looked pretty decent last night, and looked the same build, albeit not as tall, when standing next to Ah Chee.

Hope they don't change the F/S rule. One of the things that make AFL interesting.
They won’t be changing the Father Son rule, it will be the bidding system/points matching system that will be changed.

There's still also a lot to go under the bridge as to how Brayshaw's contract is going to be worked out cap wise. They signed him through to 2028 at reportedly ~$600k/year.

Clubs need to take some responsibility for given out 5 year deals to a player like Brayshaw with concussion issues, but on the other hand concussion is a sensitive topic for the AFL given the lawsuits.

If a person is medically retired due to concussion then there should be concessions as to how that players deal is managed in the cap.

Paywalled.... But last part of the tweet is interesting around changes to Father Son rules.

It won’t be changes to the father son rules.

It is more likely to be changes to the bid matching process, changes to the points system, changes to NGA eligibility and where bids can be matched, etc.

Clug has also recently stated emphatically he wants to be a Lion for life and it's just a matter of getting the numbers sorted out in the interests of both parties.
