I'm seriously surprised we signed Sharp seems highly unlikely to be given games

He'll make it. We just have to invest more games into him in the next 2 seasons. Sharp could take the other wing spot of Berry or we push one of McKenna/Wilmot to midfield and see if Sharp can slot into defense. I'd like McKenna's x-factor through the middle doing something unpredictable like what Zorko did all these years. There'll be openings for Sharp to get into the team.

We have a good line of depth now past the first 22 - Fort, Smith, Sharp, Tunstill, Gardiner, Lyons, Madden, Prior as well if he stays one more year. I hope we keep Joyce too, he'll be handy insurance for next couple of years covering tall defender role as Gardiner has been up n down injury wise. Answerth will be around for one more year - hope he's back to full fitness next year.

We're likely to lose Adams, Fullarton, Zorko, Rich. Blake Coleman and Carter Michael are on 1 year deals too. There's plenty of spots to backfill already.

dont think ive seen a single article or snippit about JL being up for trade or being interested in a trade
I thought JL was after a coaching career after footy, I could see him get an offer of 1 year playing and a 1 assistant coach or something like that. I actually thought that was the hint here at the Lions that he would follow that path with us. Somewhere like the Eagles or North, even the Bombers that have to re-build a midfield might see the merits in having him getting the ball out to the younger guys until their bodies mature a bit.

Rhys Mathieson is an UFA so wouldn't be surprised if another club offered him 2 years and chance of playing more senior footy.

Agree with most but not all of your assessment.
We are all guessing at the end of the day.
Our lack of draft capital (at present) will be a bit of a drawback, but clubs usually can work something out.
It does not always cost much to get a suitable AFL player with a late 2nd or early 3rd.

I don't think it would be hard to find someone to replace Joyce.
Adams + Joyce = 1 player for mine.
I am sure the club would have been looking all year for that type of player replacement.

Zorko defiantly gets another year if he wants to play on.
No one in the VFL close to what he can do.
His year was fine and most likely plays 19/20 games for 2023.
He may hit a brick wall like Rich, but Zorko is a fitness person unlike Rich who relied on other skills.

IMO if we win the flag Zorks will pull up stumps... great note to end a fantastic career on, don't go one season too long Dayne.

I do agree that if he gets through the rest of the year injury free and we don't win it he will deserve and get another year.

I would be. He could have been signed as a DFA when we moved him to the rookie list, and even in trades would have gone for a nothing pick. No one bit at any point so what's different now other than he's been stuck in the reserves for an entire year.

Can't see who is offering Fullarton a best 22 spot. Might as well stick around
I thought the rumour was St Kilda.

I would be very surprised if another team offered Mathieson 2 years.

The game is moving away from slow, one paced inside mids. Especially those lacking endurance and kicking skills.

JL has a young family and is settled in queensland now, i cant see him uprooting for an extra year at a club in the doldrums personally. would hope he sees an opportunity to do some apprenticing under bruce as a stoppage / midfield coach and sticks around the club for a few years once his careers done if he has aspirations to coach

A question for people who are far more across all the draft and trading rules than I am (looking at you briztoon & dlanod). I know we don’t have a first rounder to use this year after using it on the Dunks trade, but are we allowed to use our first for next year, knowing we have Levi coming in, to either bring another mature age player or move up in the draft this year?

Only reason I ask this is because I thought there was a rule around how many first round picks we must use in a 4 year period or something? Does Will count as “taking” a first rounder last year even though we didn’t have to use a first round pick?

Edit. In other words is our first round pick next year on the table, or more to the point, can it be on the table this year given those rules?

Yes. We took 2 first round picks last year and 2 in 2021 so are fine on that front.

We have drafted 4 players in the first rounds of the last two drafts.

There has been some suggestion that the AFL will look to tighten the rules around bid matching father son players, I have read speculation that teams may have to hold a pick in the round that their father son is expected the be bid on. Obviously that would prevent us from trading out our future first if that rule is brought in.

Let's wait and see if any such rules are brought in, typically announced in grand final week, then revisit this topic.

So Parish anyone? Surely we can free up enough salary cap to look at another inside midfielder with the class of parish

I don’t think he has the foot skills to fit into the play style of the team. Dunkley is quite a bit better kick and it’s probably the weakest part of his game.

Strange he hasn't been given more of a chance in the midfield. Looked very good.

Yep. If Cats want to let him go, we should definitely ask. he'll be a good fit and a bargain pick up.
