Arnold was picked up by the Swans in the MSD.
Doesn’t mean he can request a trade back home to play for us :p

I would be ok if we had a crack at Brandon Parfitt as long as the cost was low, I think he would be better depth at the least and in front of the likes of out of contract guys Cocky and Matho who are in roughly the same age bracket.

Parfitt is a no from me. If he couldn't even be made to look good in that Geelong side then he has no hope with us.

Any word on Dev as yet?? West Coast deal looks pretty good......I hope he stays. He is just starting to get some continuity in his game and time in the1's

While Wash is out he keeps his spot, Wash can have Zorko's spot mid to late next year.

Reckon Dev might wait through finals. If he plays all through to the GF it may swing him one way or the other

I don't believe in hunches, but today I feel dev is definitely gone.

Sad.

One big problem IMHO in recent years is that the midfield is seen as the pinnacle for all players (who aren’t 194cm+). I’m one person who doesn’t think McCluggage makes a real midfielder. He is an outside mid or winger. Bez, Rainer and Bailey are also not mid-fielders. Will, Dunks and Lachie are our midfielders. It’s OK to be specialist winger, flanker or tagged. We roll too many players through the centre. I don’t know where Dev fits in. I would like another big bodied midfielder for rotations.

I'm not big on Parfitt, although I've also been on record as saying that if we think we will still be in the window next year we need to have at least some depth, given we're likely to lose Matho, Cockatoo, Lyons/Zorko getting older/possible retirement etc, as well as Will missing half the year;

Also I think it makes it even more critical that we bring in an extra mid or two as depth if Dev leaves, otherwise we're hoping like hell a Lachie/Dunks/Hugh doesn't suffer a similar long term injury or we are starting to look thin in there.

Edit. Just on this, Sam Flanders would be the one I'd be real keen on and would have no issues handing over our first pick next year, given we're going to lose it anyway. He is one who looks like he could be about to become a real star.

FWIW which is probably **** all, Sumich has named him in WC's first 22 next year on the bench.
But he may have a better chance to be in their first 22 going forward. I think he is best 22 because of some of our team weaknesses, but without some improvement, I could see him being overtaken by others. Like I have said before, the boys on Kick Ons have identified Fletch as being a future inside mid because of his hands and the way he contests. So with that in mind, Dev may look at it that he will be forced to play defensive running roles for as long as he stays here rather than getting as involved in the play as he would like.

I think the nature of the workload in todays game means that it is more or less a requirement to roll multiple players through the midfield, regardless of if it is their best position or if they are natural inside mids.
FWIW Bez at his best and with good shoulders is an inside mid IMO.

I’ve seen a few people mention Flanders here recently. Are we really any chance?

Surely the Suns hold onto him as hard as they can, he seems to be the third to Rowell/Anderson that they’d want to build on

We need to figure out if we are going to go with 2 tall forwards or 3. Its blatantly obvious that Gunston is probably not going to be a factor as a 32 year old forward next year. Daniher is going to be 30 years old next year. Tex is 33 and playing some of his best football. Hawkins is 35 and kicked 1 fewer than Joe. Given Joe missed so much football earlier it could be possible for him to keep kicking 50 goals as a 35 year old but lets assume we have 3 years of Joe left. If that is the case we need to be playing a youngish forward as a third tall so that they can build into a Joe replacement in 3 years time. We need to target someone in a trade who is in that 20-24 age bracket so that we can fast track their playtime. We really should have given Fullarton a go at least once or twice when Gunston was first out just to see what he can contribute at the AFL level. If we are committing to the 2 tall forward line then we can get away with drafting an 18 year old and letting them build up for a 3-4 years before they get introduced into the AFL as a second tall behind Hipwood once Daniher retires. We really need to manage this transition period carefully.

Agree with most but not all of your assessment.
We are all guessing at the end of the day.
Our lack of draft capital (at present) will be a bit of a drawback, but clubs usually can work something out.
It does not always cost much to get a suitable AFL player with a late 2nd or early 3rd.

I don't think it would be hard to find someone to replace Joyce.
Adams + Joyce = 1 player for mine.
I am sure the club would have been looking all year for that type of player replacement.

Zorko defiantly gets another year if he wants to play on.
No one in the VFL close to what he can do.
His year was fine and most likely plays 19/20 games for 2023.
He may hit a brick wall like Rich, but Zorko is a fitness person unlike Rich who relied on other skills.

Bit of an old article but chances of finding a 100 game player from pick 30 onwards drops to like 33%. if we built additional demographics relevant to Adams/Joyce like key defender, mature body, strong build to be able to play on gorilla forwards etc - I believe the percentage will go down even further.

As a comparison there was lot of hype on Harry Arnold who got picked up in MSD by Swans. Swans have had a crippling key defender injury list but for whatever reason Harry hasn't managed to crack the first 22 over the last 12 rounds even when they had a clear need at various stages over this period. I believe the Key Defender market is pretty thin and anyone we pick up fresh off the street could still struggle to fit in.

Putting all these factors in table, I'd prefer to hang on to Joyce who appears durable, no major injury concerns and does a job when we call him in. He would've built some good relationships within the team at present. He can be retained fairly cheap and he'll find it easy to continue with the rest of the Irish crew like Madden and McKenna.

I think Parfitt will be a good replacement for Zorko. He can win the footy in the middle if needed, go forward and has decent pace. Not sure about the X-factor side of things but worst case we are adding another mid with decent ground coverage who will run back to defend.

LOL!

“We’re looking at guys like Deven Robertson, who shot to fame with the ripped jumper at Brisbane. He’s out of contract and the Eagles are chasing him,” Cleary added.

Separate to the Reid-Pick 1 discussion, Cleary said a “forgotten factor” in West Coast’s trade plans, having officially finished 18th, as it circles the likes of Brisbane’s Deven Robertson and Hawthorn’s Tyler Brockman, is the Eagles’ extra bargaining power with the first pick in the pre-season draft.

If Dev wants to leave we won’t hold him back.
But we will expect fair compensation.

That’s what I was thinking. Massive outbreak in the second half of the year and dare I say will be more expensive than just a slime first rounder. Same age as Rowell and Anderson so absolute priority to lock him down for the Suns.

All the reporting on Flanders has been he's more likely to stay with Dimma coming in.
