$1.4 mil is huge coin, you would be asking Melbourne to contribute the CBA % increases.

Our senior retirements would almost make it impossible for us to pay 95% of the cap next year with our current squad and new draftees. This should put us in the box seat with Oliver as we would be able to front end his contract, pay $6mil next year and then $150 bucks for the remaining 6 years?

What’s the big deal?

I agree, however, I would consider it IF there is a substantial discount due to his ridiculous contract. I want to * them like they ****ed us with Brown, a real fire sale offer. There is no way anyone is going to offer anything remotely close to market value. If they want him off the books and he comes cheap it means we don't have to play someone like Greenwood in the short-term, Jy can go back to half forward and there would be less pressure on the younger players.

If our starting midfield was: Oliver, Wardlaw, LDU with Thomas and Sheezel on the wings that would be nuts. I hope Phillips and Powell come on, but it would be far easier for them to learn and develop having more elite talent and a better structure around them.

This assumes we can manage/handle the offield stuff with both Thoma and Oliver. High risk, high reward. Potential for it to go bad.

If we got Oliver, I would be hugely surprised if at least one of Powell or Phillips wasn't traded out this year by an opportunistic club.

This articles pretty good, suggesting senior players have been contacted to see how Oliver would fit in. You can imagine it now.
Brady gets on the blower to Jye,
Jye mate, where are you?
Just sitting by the camp fire what’s up?
I’ve got a serious question, how do you think Clayton would fit in at North?
Jye: oh you want to speak to him he’s sitting right next to me.
Brady: good point, I might ring Luke instead.
Jye: don’t be stupid, I’ll put him on, he’s sitting across from me.
Brady: ah ok, hey Luke whats up? What’ve you been up too..
Lukey: mate, I’m great, better shape then Oliver at least, we took him out on the beers last night, poor ****er had his exit interview with Melbourne. Don’t worry we were completely responsible put him in a cab and sent him on his way.
Ain’t we all grown up these days.
Brady: ok I better go

There's a few other factors at play here when compared to the likes of De Goey and TT.

1. Even as damaged goods he holds significantly more value than either of them do/did. So any deal for him still has a real chance of rejuvenating their list with high end picks. They will be more open to trading Oliver for two top 10 picks than we would by getting lowballed for pick 20 for Tarryn Thomas. We can't afford to lose TT - there's an argument moving Oliver on might be best for Melbourne's list long term.

2. De Goey and TT, whilst on well above average coin, weren't on one of the largest deals in the league with 7 years remaining. That's a hell of a risk for Melbourne if he indeed is on 2 strikes or is off the rails. De Goey was a pre-agent and TT has 1 year left (2 years left if discussing last years rumors). Oliver will be on the combined wages of both TT and De Goey....
It's going to be interesting, it's really media suggesting his worth as there's no clubs actively chasing him (that we know of).

More of who's got the currency to get the trade done, than intel that those teams want him.

No idea about if he has strikes against his name yet, if he's getting a live in boarding situation at 26 years old for his own good, there's plenty of conclusions that can be drawn from that.

TT on Clarey coming on “hang on, these campaigners put me through a heap of bullshit, working a minimum paid job to improve my behaviour and then go out and grab this campaigner? On a 1.3 million dollar contract. Ive seen him out, we did bags together and that campaigner is way looser than me!” Yeh thats awesome North. Well done. Be ****ing dumb, could destroy the club forever

One of them has sent death threats to women before, the other if Clayton Oliver.

I reckon you want 4 KPF on your list

They had 5 this year and losing 3 of them gaining 1

ideally, 2 playing and 2 in development but they have King and they pushed Lukosius forward and they are going to get Walters who is an exceptional prospect and I think Ethan Read is a ruck/fwd that might go top 10 as well.

I can understand them moving on some of them. Their major issue is that King hasn't extended yet, has 1 more year and I am sure clubs have gone hard to get him.

I love how everyone thinks every AFL player is different to any other bloke in their 20’s?

Didn’t Ginnivan get caught racking lines and 12 months later wins a flag? You telling me he was out with the rest of the team and he was the only player partaking?

Maybe Oliver wants out which wouldn’t be for the first time… Was close to joining the blues 2 years ago?

Possibly, we still have room on interchange so they will have the chance to play, but that could be short-lived if we pick up McKercher.

They both show promise but still a long way off being consistent performers at a high standard.

The campaigner is a mess. Have you heard how he showed up to a Sporting Globe event? Not during, the state he was in when he showed up to it? Mate, its no good

This is the main issue.

The price is the other issue.

Ok, still a completely unacceptable and horrible thing to do.
Well, let me advise you. If Clareys behaviour is of any concern, those kinds of accusations or self demolition will occur. So if our club is serious about good role model adult behaviour, then Oliver should absolutely 100% out of the question. How will our BnF winner react when he knows how hard he has worked and then some “gun” yes, he is a gun, no doubt. Come in and shit all over the joint for 1.5 million a year (new cba)

ROO IN LIMBO

Kayne Turner became a life member of North Melbourne last month, but the utility will have to bide his time to see if he will remain at the club going forward.

The 27-year-old played 12 games in 2023 after being delisted after last year’s trade period before earning another shot via the Rookie Draft.

Turner was inducted at the Syd Barker Medal last month, along with co-captain Luke McDonald and former CEO Carl Dilena, after playing 130 games across 10 years of service.

After arriving at the club as a rookie and earning another shot as a rookie, North Melbourne will make a decision on an extension after the completion of this month’s trade period.

The Kangaroos have already made eight list changes this off-season with Jack Ziebell, Ben Cunnington, Aaron Hall and Daniel Howe all retiring, while Jacob Edwards, Lachie Young, Flynn Perez and Phoenix Spicer have been delisted.

Former first-round pick Aiden Bonar will also have to wait until later this month to learn his fate.

Veteran Liam Shiels has signed a one-year contract extension after continuing his career at Arden Street in 2023 after a decorated run at Hawthorn. – Josh Gabelich

So in 24 hours has the Oliver situation gotten cleaner or dirtier? Seems like it's become dirtier to me. Which comes across as a bit odd if Melbourne give a **** about him.

FWIW I don't buy that they want him out because of the contract inflating due to the size of the new CBA. They were already paying him 1m a year ffs and agreed to those terms with the new CBA right around the corner. I do think it's a contributing factor though.

IMO the situation is that they are balls deep into Reid but can't get it across the line and faced with some potential of "oh god oh **** Clarry imploded and we have to pay him 1.4m for another 6 years" the board has decided to shitcan him for the currency needed for pick 1. Remove one potential risk, get salary cap relief, obtain a prodigy. All in one simple move.

Someone mentioned earlier it seemed a bit like the Treloar situation to them, and I'm not sure they're that far off. Doesn't mean Oliver is a cleanskin without issues. He clearly parties hard and there are clearly issues. But I'm not as convinced anymore they are as insurmountably serious.

Opinion on going for him hasn't changed though. Serious questions need to be answered before they even decide on trying to get him across (plus I doubt he would be that interested in joining us) and if that gets a tick then they still face the draft cost of the trade, knowing Melbourne want pick 1 (spoiler alert so do we).

Trade period gets ****in' weird sometimes.
