Jack Darling: West Coast Eagles forward on trade table as part of potential North Melbourne No.1 pick deal

West Coast has made veteran forward Jack Darling available for trade if it helps the Eagles turn pick one into a life raft of early draft selections.

As North Melbourne, Melbourne and Hawthorn clamber to entice the Eagles to part with the coveted first selection in the November 20 AFL national draft.

The West Australian understands Darling is on the table, but only at the right price.

Complicating the matter is the 31-year-old has a young family and does not want to leave Perth.

The Eagles’ premiership player also has two years remaining on a five-year contract, worth about $800,000 per season, which will also come into salary cap calculations in any negotiations.

The Kangaroos have already shown interest and insiders suggest Melbourne would also be willing to take on Darling to help solve its forward line riddle.

The Demons, Kangaroos and Hawks are desperate to gain the No. 1 pick so they can draft gun Victorian youngster Harley Reid.

North Melbourne added pick 3 to have 2, 3, 15, 17, 18, 57, and 65 to its suite after Ben McKay’s free agency move to Essendon.

It gives the Roos the whip hand to package up a deal, which is where Darling may come into play.

The Kangaroos have already made an offer of picks 15, 18, 21, and a future end-of-first-round for No. 1 — an ambit claim that was quickly rejected by the Eagles – with stronger offers expected to come in the last three days of the AFL’s Trade Period which winds up on Wednesday.

Darling could be an ideal addition to the North Melbourne attack alongside Nick Larkey as the Kangaroos look to add experience and depth to the forward line.

But Melbourne is also poised for a play at Reid and entered the bidding war when it secured pick 11 from Gold Coast to No. 6 which it landed via Fremantle last year in the Luke Jackson deal.

The Demons have picks 6, 11, 42, and 47 at their disposal and view a player with Darling’s experience as crucial with their premiership window open.

The Demons have struggled to kick winning scores this season with key targets Ben Brown and Tom McDonald missing large chunks and forcing them to park Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn in the forward 50. Jake Melksham is also out for 12 months with an ACL and Grundy has now joined Sydney.

Harrison Petty has knocked back an offer to move to Adelaide, but may look at it again at the end of next season.

West Australian Demon Jacob van Rooyen is contracted til the end of 2025 and is seen as a key part of Melbourne’s future plans, but might be expendable if Reid is the reward.

An offer of six, 11 and van Rooyen would be hard for the Eagles to turn down, unless the Roos slap down a trump hand.

Hawthorn is not considered in play for Darling as it chases Mabior Chol from Gold Coast and is in negotiations with Brisbane for premiership player Jack Gunston to return to the club.

The Eagles are also keen on pick two or three so they can secure one of their prime draft targets, Claremont defender Daniel Curtin.

Apart from Darling’s reluctance to move, the Eagles are also keen to hang on to experience, following the retirement of veterans Luke Shuey, Shannon Hurn and Nic Naitanui.

Darling was firm in his belief he wanted to remain a one-club player when he re-signed in 2019.
“I grew up supporting the Eagles, so to be here for my entire career is something I’ll look back on proudly,” Darling told the West Coast website.
“I always thought I was going to be a one-club player. I’m just really excited that the club has backed me in like they have my whole career.”
Darling has played 277 games, including 20 this season.
He sits on 510 goals and 265 behinds over his AFL career, third on the Eagles’ all-time list behind Josh Kennedy (712) and needs only another four to equal Peter Sumich in second position.
Darling’s 26 goals in 2023 was his lowest tally since his debut season in 2011.

Ever
Man if JVR is up for trade I’d love North to go for him. He’d be perfect for us.

I don’t think Melbourne would put him up though. Where did the JVR stuff come from? Was it a decent journalist or some WA tabloid hack?
WA tabloid fodder from Sumich back in July in the West Aussie > Reid or Van Rooyen? Eagles in box seat for aggressive trades

Typical, we are WCE, you are a Claremont boy playing for a top 4-6 side, come home to us the super rich, starting a painful rebuild that their fanbase still believe it hasn't started, we'll back our system to keep interstate kids but show no hypocrisy trying the go home factor on east coast base WA players!!!

Are they paying us draft capital to take Darling? He's the kind of player you take for nothing if keen, not a player you give up capital for when your best players are all 25 and younger.

Righto. Nothing in it then. Has about as much credibility as this photo a Collingwood supporter sent me yesterday. IMG_4633.jpeg

Yes, the entire article is built on speculation. But anyone saying there isn't smoke coming from the Darling fire hasn't worked out who our true ITK posters are.
I see what you’re putting down right there.

I agree and the person I think you are thinking of will break the story on this very board Tuesday afternoon. The story being we are linked to Darling but plenty to still play out.

The board will jump all over this revelation 😝

Lol not referring to not kingy…

Geelongs pick 8 will be in play on 2 fronts.

1. If Sanders is taken before pick 8 and I think it's a guarantee he will be taken before 8.

2. If Ratugolea ends up in the National Draft and Geelong want to split 8 just so to screw Port and pick him at 17 or 18 before Port pick at 24.

If we traded 15 and 18 for 8, then Geelong could really screw with Port by using their pick to select Ratugolea.

So Weagles now in desperation mode and trying to offload a 31 yo champion of the club.

If we wait long enough they'll throw in Barrass as well.

Like I said in a pist 2-3 days ago. They are trapped in the HR VORTEX.

They really want Mckercher at 1 but know the fans will burn the place down if HR isn't picked.

Hold firm Brady as the picks we have are too valuable to piss away. Let them come begging for 2 and 15 and tell em they're dreaming.

To be fair, we would have burnt down Arden St if the club took Adelaide or Richmond's offer instead of selecting JHF. Wooden spoons do that to supporters. An instant fix with a generational messiah is all that they can see.

During all the pick swapping did we trade out Nostrils?

Bold but I like the strategy.
Brady's trading all became very positive for us from exactly the same day Nostra was banned from posting.

The turnaround in our trading fortunes has been uncanny - maybe Nostra needs a ban during the season as well and we will start winning more games.

JHF is and will forever be a better player than HR.

He has explosive speed.
Great Mark.
Great Kick.
Tackkes Hard.
Compact solid Build.

HR skillset is below that of JHF in every aspect other than the DH aspect.

So stop comparing what we were offered for JHF pre trade. We were never going to give him up.

HR at best is worth a pick 2 and 15 and even then I'm not sold that he will be better than Kerch, Dursma,Sanders or Watson.

Has there been any patter about getting Gunston in?
A Brisbane pro-scout advised no to Gunston - on the basis that he's a cheat (no two way running) but was overruled. He did add that Daniher is/or was too. Hope we pass on Gunston - we need to turn the ship around with forward half turnover and he's a lazy, albeit skilled, campaigner.

Yep...and where did that get us? Port 2022 1st pick and F1st along with a season long pain, SA media personalities constantly needling him to go home whilst we kept inflating his head and selecting him when we shouldn't!!
Will never forget that game where he berated Todd like he was some 200 game superstar belittling a rookie...Todd should have smacked and told to learn his place.
Compare him to the two kids we drafted this year, same shite season but never seen their body language drop - good riddance!!

Reid has been the clear No.1 this year...had Daicos not been tied as a F/S, we would have picked him over JHF all day long!!

Interesting so based off that I'm assuming you have watched him live a fair few times then

I’ve got a funny feeling they will get a first rounder off the crows for Petty somehow (crazy I know) and offer their own first, the crows first and their own future first.

The only thing is in this scenario the Eagles don’t get Reid or Mckercher and are a chance not to even get Curtin, but on paper if you are rebuilding the trade looks good.
This is why North are the only club in with a shot at 1.

Did I see Harley Reid ran a 7.40min 2km time trial? I know he didn’t run at combine but earlier this year?

If so that’s slower than a Paul Curtis etc. Thats a concern, I worry he will get found out a bit at AFL level.

Reid can’t run, Mckercher can’t kick, Watson too small, Duursma and Curtin potentially biggest upside.

If he is running 2km at 7.40 he ain’t anywhere near being a midfielder. Does he just not have the tank or a bit lazy/unprofessional?

Talk of giving up 3 x 1st rounders for a mid sized forward who can’t run seems insane.

Clearly he has skills and if we had pick 1 you take him but that number is a worry.

North should do pick 2 for JVR and pick 6. It would most likely mean we get McKeercher or Dursma at 3, a key forward and Sanders or O'Sullivan at 6. Melbourne can then trade 2 and 11 to WCE for 1.
If that would get it done they should just take 2, 17 and 18 from us now for 1 and 22. Gives them picks to trade back up if they want.

I appreciate that this time is an indication of a broader speed, endurance, or fitness concern but I have never understood why a 2km time trial is some sort of defacto proof of whether a player can play midfield or any other position. Many positions require repeat sprint efforts rather than running a good middle distance time at a steady pace. Clubs don't run 2km time trials every week at training. They do it at the start of pre-season. It's a good metric for taking a snapshot of fitness levels. But it's irrelevant late in the season when match fitness is the only thing that counts, not an arbitrary running distance.

Reid has the potential to be a better player -maybe not as a mid but he’s streets ahead of Judas at either end of the ground.

I could see him being a clone of Ablett snr up forward.
