I think Melbourne go 6,11 JVR for Pick 1 and Darling and West Coast F2.

I think it’s good strategy and I worry about picks 2 and 3. There’s not a clear pick there.

Mckercher clear pick if not for Tassie thing. But there is a Tassie thing and if he’s a gun the afl highly likely to get him back to Tassie.

Curtin, same but with WA twist. If he’s any good they will be all over him.

Dursma not great from list needs point of view and I have doubts

Watson possible but too high for 2 and 3.

I’d think Reid is the best option as he’s local(ish), most likely to succeed and has said he’s ready to rebuild a club.

I said is the other night

2 + F1

1, WC F2, Darling with some salary

That’s the main part

Then either take 3 of trade down to Melbourne and we get to keep all out late firsts, a local talent at 6, then 11, 15, 17, 18.

If you want, make a play for the cats pick 7 as well.
What if the future first is 2 or 3 as well ? This F1 is some nebulous number presently but I cannot see us being better than 15th. F1 becomes 1,2,3 or 4. That’s a bigger question I think.

I appreciate that this time is an indication of a broader speed, endurance, or fitness concern but I have never understood why a 2km time trial is some sort of defacto proof of whether a player can play midfield or any other position. Many positions require repeat sprint efforts rather than running a good middle distance time at a steady pace. Clubs don't run 2km time trials every week at training. They do it at the start of pre-season. It's a good metric for taking a snapshot of fitness levels. But it's irrelevant late in the season when match fitness is the only thing that counts, not an arbitrary running distance.
Added to that, 2km gets a player through the first 15 minutes of the first quarter. The game has barely started.

The top clubs have around 8 players covering 13km plus but also with 15-20 sprints and 4 players covering 14km plus with 20 sprints. Lots of Fartlek training. We have Bailey Scott who does both every week - but we then have guys who run 14 km but don't sprint enough; and others who don't do either consistently enough.

What are players' times like from 6-10km and 10-14km? In the middle of the 3rd and final quarter when the game has opened up? Can they give 6 or 7 sprints a quarter in the second half or are they going lactic, head wobbling from side to side? 2km time trials don't find that out.

Our fitness has been discussed at length with Q and A sessions. They took more time during the pre season learning “how to play” and worked on that component throughout the year, this pre season is going to be HELL. Be the hardest pre season this lot has ever done. Many will be broken

Typical bigfooty hyperbolic response. I’m just critiquing the top end talent and who I would prefer. Reid may well be the best prospect but I don’t think he is worth the capital to move up one spot. Duursma is already rated the same or better than Mckercher and Watson by the ”experts”. Curtin is rated thereabouts too.

And yes, my opinion is based on watching limited video footage (just like 90% of posters), you got that right.
Saying one of the top rated players “can’t kick” is not just expressing an opinion, it’s plain wrong. No rules against that on here either, so go for your life, but it’s a bit rich to say a response to what you posted about the top group you don’t personally rate is “hyperbolic”.

Ablett snr, Dusty talk is a lot!

Do you remember how good Ablett was. If he was in a professional underage system he would make Reid look like Scott Clayton.

Harley seems like a great kid, hope he does well and sure he will. But if we are talking about trading 3 picks for him let’s be realistic , there is MUCH more chance he ends up like Jaeger O'Meara or Bryce Gibbs than Ablett.
Anthony Morabito is the lesson on banking on one player
The pick before cunners

Just keep what we have , we actually have a good group of picks already. The more you spread the risk on talented but unknown players at the highest level the better imo. None of us know for certain how player a, b or c will turn out. As my Grandma used to say “I don’t know, you don’t know and neither does the cow”lol

Reid can’t run, Mckercher can’t kick, Watson too small, Duursma and Curtin potentially biggest upside.

I think we will go tall with Curtin & Duursma and back our midfielders - give the likes of Powell, Phillips, Lazzaro a chance to have a massive pre season and show us what they’ve got for next year, and if they’re not up to it move them on next year - as apparently next year draft is a “midfielders one” and we still hold all our picks so far.

They're 2 that can pretty much play anywhere including 2nd or 3rd tall options that would go well with Sheez and TT who can play multiple positions.
That said i just cant go past Sanders so he and Duursma then make a play for a pick to get O'Sullivan.

MCkercher is too much in Phillips and Wardlaw mold for mine (although more outside than them). With Sanders we can have 2 full mid rotations of

LDU, Powell, Wardlaw
then
Sanders, Simpkin and Phillips.

Thats a good balance of burst, skill with in and under in each group. Of course all midfield groups have someone injured at any given time, so still plenty of opportunity for extra minutes for those in form.
The other niggle in the back of my mind is Duursma looks TT like and if Thomas does look elsewhere we still have one. Keep both with Sheez and we can put out fires anywhere.

You'd wanna be damn sure that pick wouldn't want home at some stage.
The other dimension is the environment that the number 1 pick is going into also.

This mob is a complete and utter rabble.

They won a flag 5 years ago and had about a dozen premiership players on their list this year but still lost 5 games by 100 points or more.

To put that into context, in the last 4 years, where we finished 17th,18th,18th and 17th, we lost a total of 3 games by 100 points of more.

It's staggering that Simmo's still there regardless how expensive it would be to pay him out. He'll have to be Barassi/Hafey/Jeans all wrapped into one to get his players back.

What's more staggering is the likes of the Fireman and Goggles Barrett, having made a living feeding off how toxic our Club was in 2022, have said absolutely nothing about the shitshow that will play out at that Club in 2024.

I feel sorry for whichever kid draws that straw.

That’s it, would go for us as well with Harley. You know Collingwood, Essendon etc gonna be into him contract or no contract.

Forgetting WCE supporters you can’t blame them they just want something to get excited about, for WCE to say no to something like a pick 2 and a 15 and 17 (I reckon NM would/will offer that Clarko overpays) they would be insane. Especially when he is a flight risk no matter what is said.

You get the 2nd best kid in the country, can take a pure mid, mid/tall, goalkicker in Dursma plus bring in two quality first round kids. The odds of looking back on that in 5 years time and saying taking REID was the right thing would be 10 -1.

Imagine we had of taken the JHF offer! And that was less than this.

I am concerned we are going to find a way to stuff this up. Maybe we NM supporters are just conditioned to expecting the worst.

I don’t really get how you can say Mckercher is too similar to Phillips & Wardlaw, whilst suggesting we select Sanders.
