AFL news 2023: AFL determined to have mid-season trade period start next year

The AFL is determined to install a mid-season trade period next year that would see players moving clubs for greater opportunities after finally coming together with the AFLPA for a week of complex negotiations.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan and CEO-in-waiting Andrew Dillon met with AFLPA boss Paul Marsh on Monday for talks on a pay deal.
That new deal could end up delivering a 30 per cent pay rise to AFL players over the next four years.

The AFL and union remain significantly apart on many elements of the collective bargaining agreement, with the AFLPA wanting a 32 per cent slice of certain agreed revenues.

That deal would be up from 30.5 per cent of combined revenue for men and women, with even the length of the CBA to be negotiated.

The AFL needs to broker a deal on five-day breaks for 2024 that would allow it to play up to 15 Thursday games.

And it is strongly in favour of a mid-season trade period for 2024 that would allow under-utilised players to secure a new start at a rival club.

The league believes it can find solutions for issues including how the salary of a player moving to a club with a full cap would be incorporated in their new club’s total player payments.

While the AFLPA is open to discussions around how a mid-season trade period would work, it is strongly against any player being forcibly traded against their will.

The AFLPA is keen for a four-year joint CBA taking in the men’s and women’s competition while the league’s first ambit claim was for a nine-year deal.

The Herald Sun revealed last week the AFL is resolute in wanting a 10-week AFLW competition starting on September 1 then agreed growth metrics that would see it gradually expanding the season.

Some AFLW players are determined to get a 12-week home-and-away season this year and a quick expansion to a 17-game season.

But other AFLW coaches and players are happy with a 10-week season if the AFL can prove it will expand the competition as soon as next year.

The league wants control of the season length under a brand revamp that will include rule changes to increase scoring and a smaller number of official AFL venues.

The league has also asked the players to fund a new concussion fund that it hopes will safeguard past and current players with brain and neck injuries.

AFL list managers are hopeful the significant expansion in the AFL’s TV rights deal – a $4.5 million contract running from 2025 to 2031 – will secure players a significant pay rise.

They are hopeful of up to 30 per cent rises across four seasons, with players keen for a large slice of that increase to be in the first season of the deal.

Players are currently operating on a CBA rolled over from 2022, so could secure significant back pay for the 2023 season when a new deal is agreed upon.

AFLPA boss Paul Marsh told the Herald Sun in April there were tough negotiations ahead.

“The gap between our proposals is really significant,” he said.

“The AFL proposal’s structurally worse for AFL players than the current deal, and it doesn’t meaningfully progress the AFLW vision.”

June 2024:
“Geelong announces 5 trades completed from lower teams: “No salary cap issues here, we have plenty of room”
In unrelated news, 5 new Ford dealerships appear in the greater Geelong area”

Let's hope like buggary this bloke knows what he's doing..

North Melbourne has appointed a new national recruiting manager, six months after three of the recruiting and list management staff departed the club.

Will Thursfield was announced in the role on Thursday after a five-year stint as recruiting officer at Richmond.

Thursfield played 77 senior games for the Tigers between 2005 and 2011.

Thirsty! Get in.

In the NBA they have tampering rules, though. You can't talk to contracted players about joining your team without permission from their team.

In the AFL teams could be calling LDU every week to convince him to demand a trade to St Kilda or wherever to play finals.

They also have a draft lottery, so the benefit of tanking is less defined, as well as a college system so that draft picks have a more immediate impact given they're generally not 18.

The AFL just pick and choose, usually for the benefit of the 'have' clubs.

Something like that existed for the current trading regime I think, but, like the frog in cool water gradually being heated, it eroded as 'everyone knows it goes on'. Can't see this being any different.

If Gc sack dew as per cowro
There’s potential to shake a few loose there, there would be players that would be upset about it. Find out who and target them

When does this ever happen?

Who was shaken loose from Hawthorn after Clarko?

Gunston, Mitchell and O'Meara left because the club wanted to trade them while they had some sort of value.

I think the far more likely scenario is guys like Flanders stay to play under a triple premiership coach for a season or two.

Last year just about proved the opposite true. You had Hill and Clark on the way out of St. Kilda before Lyon was appointed, and Zurhaar and whoever else from our club that stuck around to play for Clarko.

Before the Hawthorn bullshit dropped is more accurate.

I reckon we're going to go for some more experienced players, and I won't be at all surprised if the AFL gives us the currency to do it.

Better yet his a very left field idea to think about.
At this stage let’s say the NMFC have $1 Million of spare room in the Salary Cap and if an opportunity arouse if this was brought in that you can trade off Salary Cap room to another club or clubs for draft pick or future draft picks.
Examples:Let’s say Collingwood want to re sign 2 players and need and extra $500K a season for 3 season to pay the players in question and in return we get there number 1+2 picks or maybe a 3rd pick for 3 years depending on the players who they want to sign then Example 2: you have St.kilda who have the same situation but this time for example it’s King who wants a extra $500K over 3 years and in return we get they 1st pick for 3 years.
That’s 2 examples that could help our club by strengthening our draft choices and gets the NMFC up the ladder if this rule came in.
As if what the AFL want it will make it easy for top clubs to keep getting better
As if Collingwood wanted Goldstein for the rest of the 2023 season they would offer us a 4th rounder Pick in the draft and if St.Kilda wanted LDU they could offer a potential 2nd round pick which would be no good to us.
This is only an example for what could happen but whatever happens it needs to be done in the best interests of the 18 clubs not just for 1 or 2.

Whilst I agree TMB, I think it’s important why these guys work out. They are identified based on traits that fit into a good system.

We saw what Mason was in our “system”. Players like Markov would be Pittard 2.0 if we picked him up in the past.

We haven’t had a good/consistent system for 6 years. Hopefully now we are clear on our system and what we need.
Although I agree in part, systems fall apart if players can’t kick it routine 20m, so many times have we watched senior players miss basic targets by a couple of meters.

A lot is about the basics.

Yes a mid-season draft would be a fiasco, as are all AFL run projects.

Larkey leaves North mid year to go to Collingwood.

Gilligan, " well as Larkey missed 5 weeks with a hamstring injury he qualifies as under utilised".

It is definitely not the same sport a young and naïve TAO fell in love with.
They want to create a kind of mental space in peoples heads where they spend time thinking about trades and player movements as a valid part of the game. The way it happens in the US. They want to take up as much as they can of the public's market share pof sports entertainment time.

But that whole idea is a franchise idea. Teams that clubs develop are sposed to stick together and supporters identify with that in Australia. Well maybe younger ones don't but I reckon they probably do. Everything I've seen suggests that is the way it works.

But these campaigners are obsessed with American shit.

Imagine how dirty you'd be if you built a grouse balanced list, playing good sustainable footy, were favourites to win the flag, and then another club sells off every draft pick they've got and salary cap room to boot to pinch it off ya in the second half of the year.

If we were the club doing the pinching, I’d be ok with it.

You’d be not one of the big clubs…
Time to get some children signed up on kid’s memberships… better send club guys to all the kids schools in each capital city

Free agency was sold as an opportunity for struggling teams to pick up quality players on fringe of their current teams.
This is not at all how it has played out. It has seen good players leave clubs to go to stronger clubs.
I would imagine mid season trading would be as much of a debacle.

100%.

If you are a fringe player in a premiership/top 6 side I’m tipping you’d rather hang around for 6 months in the hope of playing in finals rather than go to a struggling club that’s non competitive. No decent player in their right mind would’ve came to us or West Coast this year, yet we would’ve had the likes of Collingwood trying to poach Goldy off us due to their talls shortage.

I suppose the other side of it is, they would pay more in season for him than out of season.

But over all I agree, the more flexibility you give the clubs the more leverage the bigger clubs have to assert their privileged position.

It's a tough one, I can see good and bad in it.

For a player like Paddy Dow, he could go and play senior footy at a club who need inside mids.
Mckay playing regular senior footy with us want's to go to Port because they're a chance of a flag just doesn't seem right.

We've also heard all year is how WC, Hawks and North are a blight on the competition and introducing a mid season trade period would further weaken the bottom clubs.

If it does go ahead you need some really strong parameters around it eg: been at a club for 4 years+, haven't played over 10 games in last 2 years
