West Coast finishing last probs rules Georgiades out, but that's ok
I can’t believe I forgot we can’t now Walk To The PSD. I take back everything I said.
After Clarksons comment about previous Number 1 picks being in premierships I can only see 4 since 1990.

1992 - Banfield
1998 - Headland
2001 - Hodge
2013 - Boyd

Not great reading
Hawks traded Croad to Freo for that pick 1, and Sydney traded the Banfield one, and Boyd was pick 1 for the Giants, so only Hedland is a relevant example of the bottom team rising with their pick 1 to a flag.

Of course if by some miracle Carlton win one soon, they’ll wreck the stat a bit with Weitering and Walsh (I think the only ones remaining). Plus if a ball had bounced the other way in 2010 Saints would have done it with Riewoldt (not Goddard as they didn’t finish bottom the year they got him at 1).

who, who and who? never heard of those blokes
Hopped on here last year initially to say Montgomerie had been invited to the combine by North - I was itk cos his stepdad's mates with my dad. Reckon we would've passed over him seeing that Drury was available with pick 1 in the rookie draft

surprising to see he didn't get a chance at Essendon. Wonder if he'll go back home to SA or what

+ Cam Rayner (and our very own Jason)

This isn't going to be popular, but Howe gets another year.

Was important in the clinches in the win, yes makes Howelers too, will verey soon be replaced by far better kids.

But until Wardlaw and the kids we get this year are a bit more seasoned, there's a clear role on the list for him.

Especially with the amount of experience going out.
Edited for a cheap pun.

Plus I agree. I'd keep him as a rookie for a year. The AFL gave us extra rookie spots for senior players so getting rid of the senior players on the rookie list might not help convince them we need those extra list spots. As the year has gone on Howe has looked better too.

I meant the only remains Blues #1s from a long list. But this year again Jason wouldn’t count because they traded him in.

Interesting then to note that no number 1 draft pick has been drafted by a club, gone on to win a premiership for them and then finished their career at that club.

So those three were the reason for the combined 196 points in defeats in the last two weeks, nothing stopping * now they've been jettisoned 🙄

Under the Dodoro Bus they go.

Here's some random thoughts that add very little..

1996 #1 West Coast - 2006 Premiers (note: they weren't spooners)
1998 #1 Brisbane - 2001 Premiers (note: but merger, zones etc)
1999 #1 Collingwood - 2010 Premiers
2003 #1 Dogs - 2016 Premiers
2004 #1 Richmond - 2017 Premiers
2008, 2009 #1 Melbourne - 2021 Premiers

What does it all mean? Probably nothing.

But those are some weird examples (excluding WC who didn't have a proper #1 pick) of sides having a #1 pick then winning a premiership an average of 10.6 years later....

Lesson: don't book holidays for September 2032....

Edit: fixed eagles flag year

Technicality ? Still got drafted at 1.

It's a tricky one but I can see why H2H and others split it.

Wooden spoon side takes a #1 pick (eg Saints 2000) -> you judge the whole odds of them working together (shit team + best young player) to achieve success.

Random side trades for the #1 pick (eg Hawthorn 2001) -> less informative, basically a side who could be in the finals, on the edge of the finals or out on their arses adds the best young player. Doesn't give you much data to generalise from.

HAWTHORN is making a play for Fremantle speedster Liam Henry, who continues to weigh his options after a strong second half of the season.

The Hawks are understood to be among the clubs with interest in the 21-year-old, who is out of contract after considering his options last off-season.

St Kilda has long been linked as a potential suitor for Henry, with list boss Stephen Silvagni placing a bid on him when he was at Carlton in the 2019 draft, while North Melbourne has also been on the lookout for wingmen.

The Hawks are expected to be aggressive in the off-season after a promising campaign under coach Sam Mitchell, with AFL.com.au revealing their interest in key defensive pair Ben McKay and Esava Ratugolea in recent weeks.

Hawthorn also holds pick No.3 at the draft on the indicative order at the end of the home and away season.

Henry played the first four games of this season and then returned to the senior line-up in round 13.

The No.9 pick at the 2019 draft went on to play the last 12 games of Fremantle's season, averaging 22 disposals in that block and showing his speed on the wing. The Dockers have been keen to retain Henry, with coach Justin Longmuir saying last week the club was anticipating his exit.

"'Belly' (Fremantle football boss Peter Bell) has been on record saying the longer these things go, the more likely they don't go our way," Longmuir said.

"It's frustrating. But in the end, we've given Liam a lot of opportunity and tried to develop him the best we can to get him to this point where he's playing consistent AFL footy.

"He's been at the club for a long time now – since he was 13. It would be disappointing if he goes, because this is the best place for his career and for him to continue to develop."
