Will Day for Adelaide's First Round Pick
We’ll demand 2 first round picks and I think clubs will offer that up.

He’s my favorite player at Hawthorn and I’m not sure we will retain him beyond this year.

In total, I think this year, we could end up with 5 or 6 or 7 first round picks and I think it would be good for the club if we did.

The How:

  • I think we’ll end up last and trade our first pick for 3 first round picks. Similar to what North were offered for JHF 2 years ago.
  • I dread losing Day but I think he’ll leave and we’ll get 2 first round picks for him
  • I can see us aggressively targeting GWS for their first round Pick & O’Halloran contract dump.
  • I dread losing DGB but we may also trade him for a first round Pick.

In total, we could lose Day & DGB and pick 1 and gain 7 first round picks and O’Halloran. (say something like picks 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13) We may push for 1 or 2 of those picks as future first round picks so we end up with 5 first round picks this year and 2 future first round picks.

It sounds crazy but that is possible and as much as I hate the thought of losing Day and DGB and pick 1, I’d do that sacrifice/deal for the long term benefit of the club.

We could end up at the end of trade and Draft period with:
Outs - Day, DGB, Pick 1
In: say, Duursma, Moir, Watson, Caddy, Archer Reid, O’Halloran and 2 future first round picks

Plus our current second round pick, and Will McCabe.

This means we end up with:
3 x KPP (say Caddy, Reid, McCabe)
2 x top end midfielders who can play forward (say Duursma & Moir)
1 x small forward (Watson)
1 x experienced mid (O’Halloran)
1 x Second round pick (say?)
2 x future first round Picks.

Love your style CK! Genuinely fanciful in the true spirit of the thread! If we can get 4 I’d be rapt so this is gold. Interested in that scenario that’s net 6 players in after dgb and day leave, who are the other 6 list changes?

I disagree.

To use hawks drafted in similar areas, I’d rather Josh Ward + Will Day vs Harry Sheezel (the effective player taken at their pick) + some plodder, even if sheezel is the best of that lot

Twomey and Beveridge suggest clubs could offer 3 first rounders for pick 1 this year, nothing heading back the other way. If one of those is in the top 5, as phenomenal is Reid is, I’d probably want to take it.

We need quantity of quality at the moment

I don't disagree with the idea, I just think it was poorly executed. There were 5 WA potential top 20 prospects in last years draft and West Coast managed to turn pick two and two early second rounders into two of them. I thought they could have got those second rounders involved and tried to get at least one more first rounder back.

Will was one of the first building blocks of our rebuild and will be in his 5th season next year whilst whoever we draft with that pick would be in their 1st. Just feels like we’re spinning wheels.
We wouuld still have Newcombe in that age barrack but I wouldn't want to active shop a player of Days quality during a rebuild.

Will Day for Adelaide's First Round Pick
If he wants a trade home to SA and It could happen because he hasn’t renewed his contract. We would want a lot for him but I doubt he’s worth a top 10 pick unfortunately.

Seriously I love the idea. The only issue is you have overvalued two of our players.

Day – We won’t get 2 first round picks for him. We would be lucky to get one at this stage. I love him as a player but he is all hope and potential ATM.

DGB – His first year looked like a jet and now he can’t get a game in the seniors. If we lose him, it will be for not much unfortunately. Unless he plays this week and consolidate a spot and starts taking big skelps the hype starts on him again.

I love your enthusiasm though mate. I’ll be daydreaming about this scenario playing out all year. Would be amazing.

Adelaide got:
Rankine
Pick 46
2023 4th rounder (tied to Freo)

For:
Pick 5
2023 3rd round pick (tied to Adelaide)
2023 4th round pick (tied to Adelaide)

Essentially pick 5 for Rankine with some shuffling of late selections.

There's no way we are getting two firsts for Day based on current output. He'd need to have a huge season to command that kind of package.

Heard a rumour on the Hawks Insiders podcast that DGB is certain to leave at the end of this year if he's not in the seniors side. Anyone heard anything like this?

Rankine's output at GC wasn't exactly Pick 5 worthy. They coughed it up based on his potential.

Nup - that’s why it’s merely a rumour on a podcast.

Pretty hard to leave at the end of 2023 when you’re contracted to the club until the end of 2024.

The only issue is there is no alternate universe where any club ends up with 5, 6 or 7 first round draft picks.

Absolutely ridiculous

You expect that’s right why would he stay to play box hill when he’s a walk up start at home for west coast. If we want him he needs to play we are giving reeves unearned games with an eye to the future why is DGB any different? You know at least you would get 100% commitment a trait sorely lacking last week

Not sure what it is in particular, but I think Watson would compliment our team maybe more than anyone else in the draft.
I really think we’re only four great players off completely turning the rebuild ship around.
A great specialist small forward - Watson (top 5 pick)
A Key position forward - King after next year? (The dream)
A game breaking MID - Trade / Draft
A great medium DEF who actually defends settling the back 6 so we don’t look baby gazelle like when the ball hits the deck - Maynard type.

I was told recently that his missus moved over here. On top of being contracted and the fact that he’s been on social media liking posts about how he should be given time to develop I find it hard to believe that he wants out.

Just on the salary dump, there actually has to be a decent salary for gws to consider that. Ohallaran would be on minimum chips, they’d never give away a decent pick with him. If Whitfield has a poor year that would be much more likely the player they would try to move on. But if you’re taking a 900k a year salary on the books you’d want a pretty good pick to come along with it.

Ohallaran is OOC at the end of the season.

Good to hear, hopefully that is the case.

Begs the question why that is submitted to an incredibly niche supporter group podcast with a few thousand listeners with such certainty.
