Getting WA talent like Curtin will surely be high on their list of wants. I'm not sure they'll want to take the risk on elite interstate talent committing to a hard rebuild.
Not like player retention has been an issue for them for the most part in the past. I could very well be wrong but i think clubs need to back themselves in to retain talent and take the best available in this position. If a club offers an absolute stupid package of course you consider it, but outside of that i would be taking him.

Hypothetical trade:

Hawks get:
Suns 2023 1st and 2024 2nd.

Suns get:
Hawks 2023 2nd and 2024 first.

That would give the suns 3 x 2nds, 2 x 3rds and 3 x 4ths to match bids on the academy kids as well as bolster their draft hand next year.

Give us the opportunity to take 2 kids in the top 10. Say picks 3 and 7 + McCabe.
The Opportunity to bring in 3 high end picks this year and attack FA next year would be perfect for the profile of the list. Especially given this draft seems to have more players of need for us at the top end. (Rather than the usual 6 or 7 midfielders)

Why would the suns do that though
They'd only get rid of their first rounder for more assets (points) this year.
Eg Suns First Rounder for Two seconds

We also don't have our own second round pick. Ours is tied to the dogs

true that.. but suns need more points only if they are picking all 3 academy kids. If they make the finals, they can only pick 2 academy kids.

That would mean they may be happy with that trade as they will have enough points for 2.

On talent absolutely but positionally I wouldn’t say that they are different players. I’m no bramble fan but he’s a line breaker Ward is a balanced mid.
But CJ is a line breaker offensive beast who has also spent enough time as a defender. Combined with Weddle and Amon we will build an offensive and defensive set of wingmen.

Is 3 x 2nds, 2 x 3rds, and 3 x 4ths enough for Walter, Rogers, and Read? That's the big question.

I assume WC will take Reid with Pick 1. Then the big one is North with Pick 2. If they take Caddy or Watson and not bid on Walter (which could likely happen), then we hold the next pick (Pick 3). So maybe we make some sort of mutual agreement with GCS that we won't bid on Walter with Pick 3 (during the trade negotiation for the pick swaps).

That leaves Carlton (Pick 4), GWS (Pick 5), and Sydney (Pick 6). Idk why Carlton would bid on Walter but who knows. So he'd possibly go at Pick 5 or 6 let's say? That could do no harm for GC's sake imo.

Also a lot depends on how much Rogers and Read slide down the board. Hopefully we get a swarm of other bolters that rocket up the draft rankings, allowing for Rogers and Read to slide. So GC will need less points to bid on those players if they need to.

I think if all of the above happens (may or may not), GCS could have enough points to get in all 3 NGA players and have our future 1st round pick (which could possibly be a high pick). That might be enticing on their end, and obvs two 1sts would be great for us to develop these kids ASAP.

I did my ladder and had
18- eagles
17- Roos
16 -Hawks
15- GWS
14- Richmond (Giants pick)
13- Blues

If giants traded 4 and 5 for 1
Giants 1 - Reid
Suns 2 - Walter
Roos 3- Duursma
Hawks 4 - Caddy
Eagles 5 - Curtain
Eagles 6 - Edwards
Giants 7 - compensation pick for Himmelberg leaving

In this situation would we trade our future 1st for pick 7 to take Watson and would the Giants take that deal ?

It’s way too much
For us it is. Agreed.

We’re in a rebuild, not a “tear it down for 1 player”.

Trading out 3 players for 1 takes us backwards.
People need to let go of the Harley fantasy.

Himmelberg ain't getting them pick 7 in compensation!
