Correct. But they could use it to split the pick and/or trade it for a future pick in a multi club trade.
Gold Coast have an opportunity to do the following:

Nothing and keep King and get Walter, Read and Rodgers

or

Trade King for pick 3 and get Reid, Walter, Read and Rodgers (assuming they trade picks 3/4 to WCE for pick 1).

Considering they got plenty of forward talent and a salary cap that might enjoy the relief of not having King's salary on their books, they might like this option.

I have no inside word or info BTW.

If it's not going to be used this year, why would you wait to use it next year? Ben King will be out of contract as well next year, so he'll have even less trade value.
That’s the gamble isn’t it? If we traded next years 1st and it turns out to be pick 8-10, the trade looks bloody good for us. Add King + Watson or Duursma to our forward line along with continued development of our current list…. I think we could push close to a finals birth.

Zero issue with trading our future first for King. Back ourselves to improve.

Even if we stagnate next season (ie. Another bottom 4 finish) we'd still have this years pick 3, King AND McCabe on our list.

I'll be stunned if we stagnated TWO years in a row, so not having a first round pick next year really wouldn't impact us heading into 2025.

The question of course is if a future first and something else is enough for Ben King?

I'm sure Hawthorn's list management would absolutely jump at King if he's available for pick 3 or a future first - King is proven quality (and even then, still developing) no one you draft is guaranteed to be better than him, and could equally be the next Dowler...

One in the hand and all that...

We won’t trade pick 3 for king the draft is too strong. That said can people commenting on the suns not wanting pick 3 because of Walter, please think beyond 1 step ahead. that pick is so valuable they could do amazing things with it like they are planning with their first. They would love it. Ben king for our f1 and something else is good business.
The Haynes salary dump is critical in my mind as it is our best chance to unlock a deal to get suns r1 and take 2 elite talents which is what we need if this is the last year of hitting the draft.

The main sticking point here that seems to keep getting missed is that Gold Coast don’t want a first round pick this year as it will get sucked up by their academy selections. Hence why they are open to trading their first round pick this year.

They wouldn’t want Hawks first round pick this year either for the same reason.

Could be a good move for Hawks to trade a future first round pick + likely other assets to secure King.
That would mean we keep this years first round pick.

Picking up King and Watson/ or Duursma would be a seriously good outcome for us.

That’s not even taking into consideration of the potential rumours of Gresham, Henry, Ryan, GWS salary dump etc.

Please read my post a few minutes ago. Picks can be traded more than once. Having 3 and 4 allows them to trade for pick 1 and get ahead of the bid. List managers think many many steps ahead.

Re- king, if the player is set on going to Hawthorn than usually clubs oblige as 12 months down the track the player could change his mind. For me, this year's pick 3 is untouchable but, we have future first in our pocket. So maybe, we somehow find another top 10 pick from a salary dump and hand that over as well. That imo, is very fair for both parties. Basically two top ten pix for King.
Grab pick 3 + King+ McCabe+ a FA like Gresham and that would be a great outcome for us. And then there's the Brockman for Liam move that could eventuate.

Two scenarios I think we would consider:

Pick 3 alone. GC can use it to trade up and we get a quality 40+ goal forward that is young enough to grow with our group.

Future First + Pick 29. Gives Gold Coast points this year and a potential top 5 pick next year. More appealing for us.

The problem is I think they'd be asking for two firsts.

I think my ideal case at this point to get King + keep our first:
GWS trade us future first + Haynes for salary dump
We trade Hawks F1 + GWS F1 + 29~ for King.

Given pick 5 will definitely be absorbed in a Walter bid coming earlier in the draft, I wonder if there's something we can do to sweeten the deal to land us that pick as well- I'm not sure what it'd take but I think it'd be very worth-while us looking at what players/what we can contribute to make it happen!

I’d very much hope that’s not what the suns would ask for King. Or that we’d pay that.

CJ and a F1.
