From the outside looking in seems there has been a shift in strategic planning and club trying to accelerate progress which on face value looks quite scatter gun.
Generally majority of moves are in the works well and truly by mid season I was involved on the outside at a club that internally overrated its list early hopefully the same is not happening but time will tell

lol. We closed on an sub-elite outside mid.

Weve missed on:
- Sheil
- Lynch
- Coniglio was nearly over the line
- Whitfield was nearly over the line
Elite players that were up for grabs.

There’s more, but I can’t.

Now for some of those - Sheil in particular - missing was a blessing.
But we wanted him, and didn’t get him.

We have trouble closing.
Shiel we walked away when Giants let it be known they wanted 2x firsts. Know this for a fact, because Grizzlym was in a meeting at the Carlton football club when they were told that Hawthorn had pulled out of the chase for him - they smugly thought they had him at that point.

Lynch we were never any great chance.
Whitfield was never close to the best of my knowledge.

Coniglio we had on the hook.

FP, my friend. You KNOW that's exactly how it works.
The whole board should be used to it by now.
It feels like we do this dance every year.

What ever happens, the HFC will be fine regardless.

I think we just wait for the official word on McKay or we inevitably go through a rollercoaster of emotions till he decides
People working themselves in to a frenzy these last few days when in reality nothing has changed... At any point

Some are in for a long month

I think we start working on 2024 trade period now if we haven’t already and forget this one there’s not much to be had apart from the suns pick. None of the players linked are world beaters so we have another year of development find more mid time for Ward CMac and Frenchy and draft in Duursma McKercher McCabe and Jiath.

I watched AFL360 just now Chris Scott went unchallenged for 2 minutes of absolute tripe. Journos please. Nothing against Scott he’s doing what he should to get a decent pick but Cry me a river! he doesn’t want to lose Esava because of the investment in him, this from the club and coach who has r*ped and pillaged for ready made players other clubs have invested in far more than any other. Then he said KPD market bare (true) but went into mention Esava from a draft value perspective in the same company as Tom barrass (an A Grade KPD) and Ben McKay (who is only valued highly because he costs not draft capital). What a campaigner!!!!😂😂😂😂😂

We had the best deal in front of him. Nothing eventuated.

His manager is a Bomber.

I think it's safe to say that they just wanted Essendon to raise their offer.

I mean, making the Bombers pay more for a player their fans aren’t even excited about is kind of funny I guess.

The positive on all the misses -For all the players the bombers landed and over paid for, it did not bring them premiership success.

Even with f/a free hits, payment balance is still important and plays a role in team morale and moving forward as one.

On the Tyler brockman board a tigers guy floated Allen for pick 3 and brockman. If brockman around 38 that values Allen at pick 2 so I’d want something like 38 back but I could do that deal. Especially if we give 29 and f1 for suns pick. Allen Duursma McCabe works for me.

No chance Allen is a WA boy and will be the eagles next captain

I am just expecting another 2 years of hitting the draft and picking up value players like we did with Impey. The 2024 free agent class isn’t all that exciting and I doubt we have any chance at Ben King. Time to hope our recruiters are getting the job done.

I am very interested in whoever we may be picking up in the draft but cannot muster much enthusiasm for any of the free agents or rumoured trades that we have been linked to by mainstream or social media.
The Wiz, Colby or Zane are our future.

Todd Marshall stands out as an RFA would be an ideal option next to Lewis.

Coniglio and Whitfield opted to stay.

That's not exactly the same as 'missing'. Missing because the players choose a different club is where the real frustration lies.

Also, we landed Patton, Wingard and Scully. Let's just say that sometimes it's better to 'miss' in the long term.

The free agent cupboard is so bare this year that I'm not even sure why Ben McKay has everybody on here losing their minds over his decision. I don't believe anybody thinks he is a game changer. He'd fit a role, but he's a far easier player to replace in our projected round 1 sides than Amon, who we brought in last season.

For perspective, who are our first choice wings for round 1 next season if Karl didn't come to us? That acquisition was a stronger one, and we nailed it.
