Would rather Parish than TDK
What chance Parish actually leaves though?
Most FAs don’t leave for a team in the same state generally.
Would be nice though.

Elite big bodied midfielders don't grow on trees and most are not top 7 picks other than Petracca. So take FRD pick and go to the draft.

We got Crouch cheap and has been a great get as he had a drug stigma and Adelaide were rebuilding. Steele was a 2nd round pick GWS used and we paid around that for him. Wood DFA Hill from Freo we paid a premium to get but finally showing to me he was worth it. So there is always players around other clubs looking for a fresh start that fill a need that do not cost a pile.

Be careful of the rich bauble al la Shiel over rated and under delivered. However Taranto and Hooper are delivering for Tigers....but Tigers do have a fair stack of good young players coming through....so they could afford the risk.

We have Bytel who will be at least a GOF potentially Seb Ross level. Hotton who knows but is rated. Pou will be good so will Owens and Windy not far behind these two all show potential to be full time premium mids.

Be nice to get a 23 year old bull gun mid.....so would every club.....as well as the one he is at.....so you finish up paying potentially paying too much. DeGoey we almost got and if Pies had finished bottom 6 reckon he was probably ours.
Glad Hunter stayed and we are seeing the results. Cheapest way of getting a gun is through the draft and hoping you get lucky otherwise you tend to overpay.

There are always plenty of GOFs out there that you do not have to chase and pay too much.

I worry about Ben King as he will cost all of 2 FRD picks and that reduces the potential to get that premium mid we all desire. There is the romance of it and be great if he could play CHB as a POD....but not sold on him as yet.

Going to be interesting when Jones Billings DMac King Caminti Coffield Hayes Webster are available who the pecking order is. That's 1/3 of the first team selected last year. Then we may get an idea of who is surplus to requirements as schlepping around at Sandy waiting your turn will not cut it for some and they will want the door. Probably 4 of them will not be here in 3 years for a myriad of reasons.

We are a good side who have finally got the drafting right the coaching right and the playing group pretty right, now we just have to be patient and see where the improvements need to come from.

Do you think he is worth a shot with a late 2nd rounder? Or future 2nd?

Hard to say. He'd be a wingman/ high half forward/ rebound back longer term. It looks like he's not a great user so ideally he would replace Wood in a couple of years as he winds down. He's a decent goal kicker from what I have seen and gets them a lot like Wood, snaps or long range set shots.

He looks like he's having an ordinary season so far and not stepped up. You might get lucky if he wants out and his form is average and get him for a third. On current form you'd have to have a think about what players there are in the draft around our second pick before you did the deal.

You are buying on potential and he's probably just stepped over that promising kid point in their career to might not be as good as you'd hoped stage. At this point of the season he's looking like a bit of a GOP but we'll see how he goes as the year rolls on. Port are playing him so see a future for him, they have plenty of depth.
Can't see us getting him for a third. A 2nd rounder is fair value if we make finals.

He hasn't come on like he looked he would in pre season but he's still been solid and is only 21 years old.

Jesus, imagine if we were to bring in Fyfe and give a big contract to TDK

I'd be wanting to James Gallagher back

I'd be very keen on Ben Hobbs

I was very keen to take him in his draft (although I'll admit NWM has worked our well for us)

Looks like he's getting the same treatment Parish got early where he's played mostly across half forward. I reckon when he eventually gets unleashed into the middle he will be a jet.

The other thing to like about him though is that he can push forward and kick goalssohes not the type that is midfield or nothing.

Since Bassat's review the question that he asked, "What do we have to do to win a flag?" (ok. maybe not a roper quote). The question that I have asked myself is can I see this group of players/coaches win a flag?

We've made the coaching changes and they deserve the time to show their merits, the same for the changes in recruitment/player management.

The on-field changes are a different thing, the game against Port hasn't changed my thinking, the same issues keep coming up.
Lack of a tap ruck man, lack of a breakout midfielder, lack of a key forward, one big key defender needed.

Remembering that Bassat has said that we're comfortable sliding down the ladder this year, that we look to be in the finals next year and competitive the following year.

If I look at the list however some of those questions about rucks, key defender, key forward may have already been answered, in three years with Keeler and Heath we may have the ruck men we need, with Adams and VanEs we may have the big key defender we need, with Keeler and Caminiti we may have the key forward we need.

What we don't have is dynamism in the midfield, or at least not to the level of competing with Melbourne or Brisbane, or Carlton or the Bombers or Port or the doggies and probably not Adelaide either. Port beat us by playing finals football, high pressure one on one competing, and Windhager aside we don't have young mids coming through. What we do have is a puzzle and maybe the answer in Phillipou and Owens.

As the season goes on King comes back, Hayes comes back Caminiti comes back Hayes comes back, Keeler potentially comes in, they don't push Owens and the Pou out, they push them to more midfeld minutes. As Coffield, Billlings, Webster come back, they add further pressure in the midfield, through injury Van Es or Adams come in maybe they do push Battle and Howard.

The argument becomes "What is our best midfield in three years' time?" because we're building a list noy just for next year but for where we will be in three years' time, who we draft this year will be our midfield in three years
Because in three years
Zak Jones will be 31
Jade Gresham will be 28
Brad Crouch will be 32
Seb Ross will be 32
Brad Hill will be 32
Jack Steele will be 30
Jack Billings will be 30
Mason Wood will be 32
Jack Sinclair will be 31
Hunter Clark will be 27

Regardless of who we trade out there will be 8 that are coming to the end of their careers, or already at it. Above all we need to draft really good young midfield talent, while I'm not intrinsically against getting Fyfe or Whitfield they can only be short term answers, Fyfe will be 34 and Whitfield 31. They are very short term prospects interesting, fun even and may be great for a year or two, but not the answer for three years time. If they cost nothing but a salary ok but as list managemnet they're very meh.

Of the above, regardless of their current merits who do we invest in or just keep, who do we trade? The only ones that have trade value i.e. early second or first round pick would be Gresham and Clark. The complicating factor is Ben King, the more we want him, the more we pay for him the more we need to get back in other trades to find the mids that we need. All of a sudden the focus becomes not the just the midfield but who we can afford to trade out and still be at strength. The development of Adams and Van Es is crucial because we may need to make a choice on Battle or Howard, because they will have trade value, Caminiti will have trade value where will he sit if we get Ben King, or does getting Ben increase the pressure on the backs because we want to play him back.

In the short term our midfield is our greatest weakness, in the long term the midfield is our greatest weakness, in the long term it's the easiest to fix through the draft, we need to be very clear and clever on who we draft and who we trade.

I would trade Battle, Clark and Gresham, not because they are poor footballers but because they are good footballers, we can cover their loss and they will get us a return as draft picks. The draft picks that we need to invest in higher potential midfielders.

If we don't win a flag in the next 3 years we need to rebuild again and then you could trade all of them if you are going that far. I reckon we need to keep adding talent not removing it. Getting kids in just prolongs the wait and by that time most of our bests will be over the hill.

A better tap ruck makes our midfield better....getting a good HBF to replace Sinclair lets you put him on ball and Owens, Windhager, Phillipou etc haven't been tried. Some depth of ready to play talent means you can cover for holes at least.

You could even try putting Marshall in as a tall back like Lyon used to use McEvoy if you get anther ruck in, he's a star but not as a tap ruck. I reckon we need to start adding pieces that fill holes and getting creative because the moment will pass us by if we don't move fast.

I see our issue a little differently

I think we have the players to have a very strong midfield, but some of them aren't playing in the midfield. What needs to happen is Sinclair needs to become a full time mid and Owens need to play mainly in the the midfield with maybe a bit of time forward, not the other way around.

I also think Windy has a heap of potential, and I still think we haven't seen the best of Bytel.

But who of our current midfielders can do we push out?

Crouch gets 30+ regularly, and works his arse off, but how well does he use the ball.

Clark has X factor and is a point of difference.

Steele is currently a long way off his best. He's a ball pig but has never been a great field kick.

Gresh has X factor and can play forward, but has had a poor start to the year, although was better this week.

What would I do? I'd build a midfield around Sinclair, Owens and Clark. I believe that would be an upgrade as a midfield unit on anything we've had for a long time.
I tend to agreed. I'd like that Van Es could rapidly integrate and they push Sincs into the midfield. Likewise when King returns l hope Chito moves there too.
We're a bit stuck with the older guys being in career best form but hard choices are good to have.

Parish & Himmelberg both FAs and both offer more then TDK

Adelaide has a couple of good rucks in the SANFL that don't play seniors so does GWS. I wouldn't get crazy and over pay for TDK either.

Surely we don't even talk to Fyfe

The only thing I imagine they might want him for is his leadership and standard setting. He's a proper Rooey type high expectations general. Looks absolutely cooked but plenty are saying Freo are letting him rot.

As far as filling up now it's a fair call and a roll of the dice no matter which direction we go. The only problem I see, there's two mids that have trade value now, Dougal, Battle and Coff as defenders that have value, in three years none of the mids will have any value at all.

What do you make of the comments that Ross wants a lot of draft picks this year? Are they for trading or for drafting? Is gettig Bing a good idea or rather at what price is he a good idea?

I think we were all in on rebuild but some on field success could make them start to bring the time line in. If we finish top 4 it's going to be hard to sell a lot of list changes.

Getting Bing would be fantastic, but not necessarily the best way for us to go.
