Gresh is a must keep. At the start of the year I was 50/50 if it got us a top 5 compensation pick but if we’re in the 8 and all in on a Steele-Crouch-Ross midfield it makes no sense to move our best players on.
Top 5 compo?
Ill drive him myself

What’s Ned McHenry’s contract position?
Bloke can’t seem to squeeze into the crom lineup but would be a lovely addition to the small forward/midfield rotation (Gresh replacement).
Loved him around his draft time and might just be that little bit behind Rankine and Rachele.
Massive tank on him too which Ross and co would love you’d suspect…

You don't get better by diluting the list. Unless he's got heaps of social problems I can't see how a pick around 20 at best is a better option. We still lack match winners and he's one of the few who has some of that.
Guess it depends on who we spend the extra money
FA + the pick

If Gresh goes it's for the payday. And honestly, I wouldn't hold it against him.
If we somehow got a top ten compo, I'd be stoked. Top twenty and I'd be content.

I think we need to get a contract in front of Hunter Clark sooner rather than later.

Balta under RTB and Enright could be anything - would be a great get!

He's very much another Dougal IMO. Looks great at times but absolutely shit at others. He's still young though. They'd want heaps for him and unlikely to let him go easily anyway.

You lose your compo if you pick up a FA. It would be Gresham for a swap at that point. The only player that looks potentially gettable and linked to us is the injury prone McKay. Pretty much giving away Gresham to pay a guy to sit on the injury list incase we play a 37 year old Hawkins.

Parish isn't coming realistically. He's the only one I'd want to chase as a potential swap.

I’d be matching any contract offers for gresh unless it was north of $800-820k (band 1 - 1st rdp). Playing strong footy and still a good age, probably will still be around when the younger guys are at peak age so we’d get this tilt at a flag and another one once crouch Ross wood etc drop off.

Unfortunately Dmac and Jones may not go around again and that’s $1m right there sitting in the rehab room so cash not much of an issue.

I hate the idea of TDK. Unless he came for nothing draft capitol wise and on a moderate short term contract. But speaking to Carlton friend who reckons they’d be wanting a mid first rounder lol

A top 10 compo pick can only happen if;

Gresh’s contract results in band 1 compo

And

We don’t make the finals ()

*the best compo pick we can get is a pick straight after our 1st round pick (eg finish 6th get pick 13 & pick 14 is compo)

What’s our max-out point with Gresh on current form? $650k - is that light on? I’ve lost touch with the common man.
As someone who is still very much in touch with the common man, I think around 650k is about right from our point of view

It would take an offer of around 750k for us to get band one compensation

The only way you get a pick higher than end of first round is when the AFL want to provide a thinly veiled priority pick. If we make finals they won't do that, realistically a pick around pick 20 to 22 would be likely even if he tips into band 1 compo. There will e a few FS and priority picks taken out before the end of FR.

If we threaten to match then you have to hope that you didn't just cost yourself $200k a year that you didn't need to pay when they tell you to piss off or do a Crouch and end up losing him for a shit pick.

10 years ago maybe but now I just think it comes down to the size and length of the contract.

I think the only way he'd get a band one compensation though is from a bottom side that has cap space and want to avoid having to trade for him

I can't see him wanting to go to a rebuilding club though so it's probably unlikely he gets band one. If there is not a lot of difference between the wage than you'd just hope he stays.

Free agency seems to have tightened up now for sure. The compo is getting less all the time. I bet if McKay goes and North finish last again, they'd find a way to give them a pick mid way through the first round or something.
