The 2020 top up remark relates to Higgins and Crouch.

Higgins grew up a mad Sainter and wanted badly to play for us, and Crouch cost us no draft capital.

On others, McKernan replaced Abbott so no change to the list profile there, and Frawley was a mistake in hindsight which had some basis in sentimentality.

When you get a player of Higgins age and profile, its not topping up.
Was Jason Gram a top up?

Top up players we've brought in were Carlisle, Hannebury Ryder , probably Jones.
Depth players we brought in were : Brown, Rowe, Frawley, Campbell, Abbott, Hunter. ( For those wondering why we got Rowe, i think the team wanted Gilbert to go round again but he didn't ).

Punter wasn't making assertions, he was hypothesizeing on another post.
I'd argue we've never topped up anyway.

Correct Higgins is from the same draft as Clark and Coffield and by the look's he has been a fantastic pickup and the Crouch free agent deal could well be one of our best ever trades considering his price , contract and performance.
The club needs a pat on the back on how they turned a vanilla list to one of the youngest and brightest in the AFL.

Also I don't really care what they call top up players when you pick up guys like Wilkie for basically nothing and a delisted guy no one wanted in Wood who is currently one of the best players running around.

And now with a lot of the younger guys getting to the age where they will show there best the sky is the limit with our new coaches and game style.
With this core of young players who knows how many A grade players we have - King , Owens , Milera , Clark , Coffield , Higgins , Windhager , Battle , Paton , Bytel , Byrnes , Hammer , Heath and so on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the last 2 drafts. I'm just not sure about how clear the list management strategy was. Maybe that's just my cynicism coming through.
Yeah maybe, when we are looking at flatlined results year in year out, you have every right to br cynical.
I stand to be corrected, but I was sure the strategy was to trade hard in 19 and start FA and hard draft in 20 going forward. We were saved from ourselves a bit by Bing resigning with GC.
The two provisional firsts we needed for him basically went on Naz and Pou. North also saved us a bit by knocking back the Clark deal.
So why I am relatively happy with the strategy, we have had some sliding doors moments where we were a bit lucky.
Also our moneyball picks, Wilkie, Wood, Stocker, Hammer, Heath (in time), have or will come up trumps as well.
Hasn't been perfect, however it is not disastrous as some try to make put for inexplicable reasons.

We had one season where we traded in a number of players (all of who were young enough to play 100 games for the club with one exception).

That’s not topping up. It was targeted trading to fill significant holes we had (outside run, midfield depth & run, tall defender, ruck & small forward,) Every single one of those blokes who were brought in have made a solid contribution & 4 of them are best 22.

People seem to ignore the fact that clubs regularly identify drafts that are thin & trade out of them. The Swans & Cats are expert at it… Richmond did it last year after loading up the year before. We obviously thought that 2020 was a crapshoot so brought Snags in, who was a talented young player in his own right.

The strategy can, and is at times, both trading & drafting.

There wasn’t a U-turn, just a return to a focus on drafting (especially with the stronger, deeper drafts of 2021 & 2022).

We should go hard for Parish

In 2020 we clearly tried to top up and go again and that didn't work.
In 2021, after a mediocre season they looked confused about rebuilding or going again and as a result did nothing apart from getting a few picks for Windy and Owens. We drafted the best player available with Nas which turned out to be a great pick.
In 2022, it was much of the same as 2021.

We didn't actively look to get in more draft capital, we were just in this weird holding pattern where the club didn't know which way to go.

Not trying to get more draft capital or not prepared to trade players we didn’t want to lose?

Who should we have traded last year that would have got us decent picks?

Maybe, l dunno. Is that the year we took Chip and Smack too?

They weren’t added to put us into premiership contention… they were break glass in emergency types that pretty much every club needs.

You don't need to give up a whole lot to generate more capital. I just don't think we're very savvy when it comes to moving up the draft. On the other hand, maybe the club didn't identify any gaping holes in the list that needed to be filled. But as a general rule of thumb, I'd assume moving up as high as you can is the way to go.

Nothing... except we've already got two in steele and crouch.

Merrett would have been much better for our needs.

Dare I say it- but the kind of mid we really need is.... a josh kelly type.
Don’t sleep on Parish, he’s no. 1 in the league for clearances and averaging 3.3 more than Crouch. Crouch will be 30 before next season starts. Ross 31 next year.

Despite a nice start to the year we need to maintain bringing quality through the door. We’re going okay, but could go better.

As long as Parish doesn’t ask ridiculous money I’m in. Clear some cap space by moving on Zac Jones who has been occupying a list spot without giving anywhere near an acceptable return on investment.
