I'm fine with that

I'm not fine with throwing away good players for the sake of change.

Out of Gresh, Howard, Billings, Clark and Coffield, Coff is probably the last one I'd want to see go.
The only one I see that might get us above the odds return might be Howard on the back of a massive Ben McKay deal.

As for the others - trading any of those out for a mid/late second rounder is not risk/reward - its just bad trading.

It seems that many comments on here are looking for Saints action in both trading players and drafting in new talent. Understandably everyone is in favour of better draft picks and bringing in high talent players from other clubs.

The main sticking point from BF posters seems to be a fear of risk. Yes we want the club to improve our draft picks and recruiting of players, but are afraid of the risk. Seems many are in favour of the principle, but afraid of the reality, of trading Coffield, Clark, Howard, in case they turn out to have great careers elsewhere.

Without risk there is no reward. Yes mistakes may be made, but if we go for safe, go for the known, we will be here in the same spot not improving, or winning that elusive flag.

This is the time to take risks and jettison those who the club doesn't see will get us there, for those who they see will. I am up to moving virtually anyone on, if the risk / reward greatly favours us. It's time to be brave.

Part of the reason have never gone anywhere in 12 years is because we can't stick to a path or a plan. It's like getting 2 years into a mortgage then cracking the shits that paying it down will take too long. Then selling the house to take the money to the casino.

You don't have take huge risks. Collingwood keep their best players and push out the shit or fringe players, they have continuity, culture and a better list than us. Even with their salary cap clean out they have managed to make solid decisions.

The club doesn't alway know what's best. To me it's like the politician selling all of our public utilities telling us that it will make bills cheaper.

There is always reward for safe and steady and good decision making. Very rarely do premiership sides go off on high risk tangents and change tack every couple of seasons. Port Adelaide are probably the model for a side that let talent walk to get back into the draft. So far it hasn't got them far even though they have a few good players from it.

Jettisoning players doesn't get you those.

Collingwood got rid of Treloar, Stephenson and Grundy who were definitely seen as good players. I think they've taken a few risks along the way.

I think some of the challenge for the club is actually working out what trajectory they are on. I mean in 2013/14 with picks 3 and 1, the mood was buoyant and the only way was up. The club stuck to that path for a long time, it was buttressed in 2017 with picks 7 and 8 and some aggressive trading, new coach etc etc.

It is only with hindsight that you can see when it all falls apart and when the club should have changed tack. It is not too dissimilar now. We have a bunch of young talent that we think is the core of the future, we have made finals. Are we on a path to contender or is it a false dawn. Do we just tweak or do we aggressively turn over players to find the right combination?

I find it hard to decide where to land. But the one thing I keep coming back to is we have some very glaring weaknesses (in terms of being a contender) and I am not sure they can be glossed over with a passive approach to list management. Current list will not win us a flag.

And I don't think we are two years in. To be honest this is still a Richo/Ratten era team. This list is still carrying the ramifications of 2013 - 2017. RTB is a year in and it IS a new plan.

But what is the reward for moving on Coffield for a late pick? Hope we draft someone with the same level of potential who doesn't experience an injury during their career?

If we want to play the risk/reward game, wouldn't we be better in this scenario by offering Coffield the 2nd year guaranteed and risk that he has a good run with it? That way, we get the reward rather than hoping an opposition club doesn't.

Maybe Lyon doesn't rate Coff? He wasn't at the club when Coff was recruited. I guess we'll know when the 2024 preseason comes around.
Neither was he for Jones. Has seen very little of him, but apparently loves him?

Pies had no choice due to salary cap strife. Grundy’s deal was ludicrous.
Also, when you have a team with very good F/S’s in it with an exceptional one heading your way, it’s not quite as much of a risk.

The Bulldogs may swap a couple of their teen picks for Gold Coast’s #4. If we can collect a swag of 2/3/4 rounders for the likes of Coffield, Clark, Billings etc then we could trade those with GC for another 1st.

All hypothetical at this stage but that is the sort of flexibility I’m sure SOS will be looking at. As well as aiming to get Henry and Dow on board.

That was forced on them. They had to pick out who to lose and managed it well. It’s in a few years that it might bite them.

SAINT WAITING ON CONTRACT CALL

ST KILDA wingman Dan McKenzie is still waiting on a contract offer from the Saints, with rival clubs monitoring his situation following a campaign heavily disrupted by a series of soft tissue injuries.

McKenzie hasn't played senior football since June last year after battling ongoing injury problems including significant calf issues, but had been the side's first-choice wing option throughout the first half of last season.

It's understood a number of clubs have registered their interest in the hard-working wingman, confident the 27-year-old can overcome his injury problems and tempted by his status as an unrestricted free agent.

St Kilda has a number of key contract calls to make over the next month with Nick Coffield, Hunter Clark, Liam Stocker and Zak Jones among those still unsigned, while its star restricted free agent Jade Gresham is also weighing up his future. – Riley Beveridge

CUT POWER BIG MAN CATCHES INTEREST

DELISTED Port Adelaide tall Brynn Teakle is on the radar of a few clubs who are searching for a back-up ruckman this off-season.
The 23-year-old was cut by the Power on Tuesday following six games after arriving at Alberton via the 2022 Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
North Melbourne, Greater Western Sydney and the Western Bulldogs have all expressed interest in the West Australian as they prepare for ruckmen to depart during next month's trade period.
Jordon Sweet has already requested a trade to Port Adelaide, Todd Goldstein is expected to depart Arden Street for Essendon, while Gettable reported last month Matt Flynn has been pursued by West Coast this year.

St Kilda is also in the market for another ruckman to support Rowan Marshall, with veteran journeyman Tom Campbell out of contract.
Teakle endured a frustrating injury run at Port Adelaide, breaking his collarbone in his debut against Sydney before a navicular foot injury sidelined him in the middle of 2023 after he played four AFL games in a row.
The 204cm, 102kg Northampton product also spent some time as a key forward and key defender during his 18 months at Port Adelaide.
The Power announced three other list changes this week but ruck duo Scott Lycett and Sam Hayes are yet to re-sign with the club, with Port Adelaide also interested in Richmond premiership player Ivan Soldo.
Teakle can be selected as a delisted free agent when the window opens for a week at the start of November. Fergus Greene and Francis Evans both landed second chances via the delisted free agency window last year. – Josh Gabelich

I love this optimism, well played.
I see he has signed on for another year with the Lions - good on him. Thought he was OK as break in glass in emergency defender.

Its a tough gig to have to come in and play as a key defender only when all the other key defenders were out.

This is a good shout.

Im fine with a measured amount of risk (Billings, Howard and co would go with my blessings) but Coff because we wont give him 2 years just feels idiotically risky to me.

If its a matter of 3 or even 4 then id back the club in, if its a matter of him wanting a fresh start then ill wish him all the best.

I suppose everyone has their limit but i cant understand how 1 or 2 years would be your breaking point for a pick 7 who showed a bit, was balling out in pre season before the knee then had their rehab cooked by a bloked weve since sacked.

Hope he stays. If we get Henry, keep Coff and our first id actually be pretty happy if nothing else moved. I think most of our improvement in 24 will come from ongoing player development. Mitch, Pou and Windy more time in the middle, King and Camma a full pre season, Paton hopefully fully recovered from the leg. Hotton, Keeler and Van Es another pre season and some development. More time for Stocker and that back 6 system.

Even if we only get Henry in (we only got Cordy and the draft boys last year) theres plenty of other upside.

I dont mind him and he seems like a great clubman but hes well down the pecking order at Brissy and a very very long shot to play in their finals campaign.

No , Collingwood were forced to trade them because their Cap was screwed.

It wasn't getting rid of those players that made them better.
Those players didn't give them Daicos for example.
