Yeah would have to hang onto Coff you would think.

Not easy on the back of a couple of dead seasons. He could easily be looking for a change.
Won't Coff be starting pre season with a whole coaching staff he's never played a game under? Surely that's enough change.
AFL lockers probably aren't that different...

It seems that many comments on here are looking for Saints action in both trading players and drafting in new talent. Understandably everyone is in favour of better draft picks and bringing in high talent players from other clubs.

The main sticking point from BF posters seems to be a fear of risk. Yes we want the club to improve our draft picks and recruiting of players, but are afraid of the risk. Seems many are in favour of the principle, but afraid of the reality, of trading Coffield, Clark, Howard, in case they turn out to have great careers elsewhere.

Without risk there is no reward. Yes mistakes may be made, but if we go for safe, go for the known, we will be here in the same spot not improving, or winning that elusive flag.

This is the time to take risks and jettison those who the club doesn't see will get us there, for those who they see will. I am up to moving virtually anyone on, if the risk / reward greatly favours us. It's time to be brave.
Agree. My reticence on Coff is the complete lack of anything we’ll get. I’d trade Chito if we could get an early 3rd rounder.

The only one I see that might get us above the odds return might be Howard on the back of a massive Ben McKay deal.

As for the others - trading any of those out for a mid/late second rounder is not risk/reward - its just bad trading.
Yep. If Cats are asking (but not getting) a first rounder for Esava, then we should throw in Dougal, his kids, his car and some chips.

The only problem with getting a pick for Dougal is that we're then a team without a full back.
If one thing came out of the gws match I hope it's that the idea that we can just source another tall defender any time we like might be done.
Certainly haven't seen any "I prefer Zaine cos he doesn't have brain fades" posts recently...
McKay getting massive money on a long contract should help some be more realistic about the trade we did to get a well preformed full back.

We had a injury prone aging Hannerbery on the list for 4 yrs and played 18 games , pretty sure Coffield is worthy of 2yrs
hannaberry had a contract for those 4 years and as soon as the contract finished he went. . nothing similar. also differetn coach.

We should retain Coff and try him out as a Mid to see if he can make it. Have already enough players that can play that intercepting defender role.

If he wants a fresh start then fine, use that pick to get Henry.
that was tried, it did not work.

Barrett: "Someone outside that list is going to be a Saints player."
Which player we haven't heard mentioned yet will be at the Saints?
Another question...If Gubby and SOS paid Cordy big incentives to shake the tree at his old club, which coconut would you like to fall our way? I'm sure ex players often have a sniff of who's gettable or disgruntled.

It's a weird word, disgruntled. We never describe content players as gruntled. Maybe we should. "No chance of getting Ben King this year, seems very gruntled with his mates at GC."

Sorry, you would trade Mitchito Owens for an early 3rd rounder?

You on crack my guy?

This is a good shout.

Im fine with a measured amount of risk (Billings, Howard and co would go with my blessings) but Coff because we wont give him 2 years just feels idiotically risky to me.

If its a matter of 3 or even 4 then id back the club in, if its a matter of him wanting a fresh start then ill wish him all the best.

I suppose everyone has their limit but i cant understand how 1 or 2 years would be your breaking point for a pick 7 who showed a bit, was balling out in pre season before the knee then had their rehab cooked by a bloked weve since sacked.

Hope he stays. If we get Henry, keep Coff and our first id actually be pretty happy if nothing else moved. I think most of our improvement in 24 will come from ongoing player development. Mitch, Pou and Windy more time in the middle, King and Camma a full pre season, Paton hopefully fully recovered from the leg. Hotton, Keeler and Van Es another pre season and some development. More time for Stocker and that back 6 system.

Even if we only get Henry in (we only got Cordy and the draft boys last year) theres plenty of other upside.
The frustrating part is the late national draft pick we'd be bringing in for Coff would get 2 guaranteed years so why not offer the same to Coff. Looking at what Brisbane or WB have, it would be about pick 60 and at that range, you are unlikely to get more than 5 games out of them in 2 years anyway.

If we offered that to him and he still wants to go, then best of luck to him and we move on. But if we lose him because we held out with a 1 year deal, then I would be furious.

I think the thing for Coff is he probably feels he needs to and wants to play if he's going to revive his career.

With us right now there would be no guarantee he's in the best 22 come round 1 or though I'm sure there is a pathway back it might not be easy.

If there is a club that tells him, we will play you round 1 then I'm sure that's very tempting for him.

Didn't stop Lethlean, who has been a 100% better operator than his predecessor.

Never needed to leave a position for a better job elsewhere mate. Always ran my own companies.

What didn’t stop Lethlean?

He bided his time til Finnis left of his own volition.

Finnis had just been appointed in Bains’ case.
