I would not count on Phillipou having an Owens like second season. Though yes we all hope that he will.

However,

1/ Phillipou is actually 15 months younger than Owens. Not just 12.
2/ Owens is a training/gym freak who join us very strong. Players like Steele all comment on just how strong he was for a young draftee joining us. Whereas Phillipou looks quite boyish.
3/ Even Owens faded somewhat late in the season.

The academy kids have had extra years in a pro environment too. They should have been partially developed physically and mentally.

Sure that makes sense.

They have more players walk out on them than any other club too. Every year someone wants to get out. Ryder, Daniher, Fantasia, D'ambrosio, Jerk-Snatcher etc. I think there was talking of Bryan and others too this year. Sounds like Shiel would like out as well.

My 2c

Tassie coming into the comp in a few years which will comprise the cr@p out of the talent pool. As much as I would love Oliver we are not a chance at winning the GF with the aging midfield of Crouch/Steele/Sinclair etc.

We need to invest in quality Mids that are kids so that we peak at the right time when Tassie is about to enter. Then we stock up on Free Agents.

We have a lot of list building to do in the next 2 or 3 years to really be at peak form. We have a decent amount of young core players, just need to draft midfielders. Get rid of Gresham/Clark/Billings/ Coff (if we get a decent pick) and hit the draft hard.

Keep Jones and McKenzie for another year for depth and see if they can get fit as they would all be upgrades on the above and it won't comprise our list.

Except there is a gigantic question mark around tassie ever coming in.

The AFL have made them entering contingent on the tassie government handing over hundreds of millions to build a stadium.

Tassie taxpayers enmasse dont want their government to do that.

The league are just setting it up to fail- so they can say 'we tried... but it's the tassie gvt's fault- not ours'.

With every other expansion team- the AFL were the one pushing it to happen... the league don't want a tassie team.

They just want to kill off the idea of it once and for all- without getting blamed for it
