I think Nicks wants Smith around 2025, even if just in the reserves. It's that simple.

There's zero doubt that the list management group are happy with where the list is at. Added some missing pieces and we are contending. We saw us as contending before adding the 3 walk up starters to half forward, half back and midfield.

We can't even play all our kids now. With anb cumming and peatling into our side + melira.

Am fine with us only taking pick 4 + welsh. Just no room to blood youngsters atm.

What a load of crap so the coach is meant to know the contract status of every player on the list Gtfoh thats the list managers job fmd i read some crap on here but that takes the cake .Simple fact is should smith still be there probably not but he is end of story

On SM-G996B using BigFooty.com mobile app
I imagine the policy is that Reid doesn't come to the coaching team with opinions on who should be getting played.

It's probably up for Nicks and the panel to decide who to play every week. I don't think anyone comes and tells them to not play someone thst they want to play, because we need to be managing contract situations.

Of course, they probably should ...

Bold sides would come up with a remedy to this. I am not knocking our trade period, we have brought in 3 players that add to our list in areas of need - big tick. BUT, the obvious thing was to not resign certain players so early and we would have had that coveted list spot for another crack at this draft...
Yeah, it's thrown a shadow on the great success of the trade period.

We didn't really have any good picks, but I guess we could have solved that with future picks.

I mean, we’re both clearly making assumptions here. You have no idea either way if it was or wasn’t Nicks’ intentions to get Smith to his trigger

If anything, Nicks saying the ‘big part of our future’ stuff showed that he clearly did (stupidly) rate what he brought, up to a point

I’m just believing what I see is the most plausible scenario. Agree to disagree
I think Nicks saying "he's a big part of our future" is the same as a chairman saying "the coach has our complete support."

I know he said that - but I don't for one second think he believed it.

What coaches say to the general public, and what they say to the team behind closed doors, are two VERY different things. Anyone who watched that Netflix documentary on the AFL COVID season knows just how diametrically opposed some statements are.

That statement was about Nicks showing public support for one of his players - nothing more, nothing less.

Nicks' actions, in dropping Smith back to the SANFL very shortly thereafter, show how he really felt about Smith's performances. As with all AFL coaches - look at his actions, not his words.

I honestly don't understand why people keep quoting this statement, as if it actually meant anything, or was honestly believed by Nicks at the time. The fact that it's quoted so often speaks volumes about the stupidity of some supporters, and says nothing whatsoever about Nicks' thought processes.
To an extent. You can support your players publicly, but you don't say a 30+ year something player is a "big part of our future". That's just a nonsense. Now if he were to say "helping us to develop our juniors in the two's" nobody would have a problem with that. It really was a stupid decision by them to keep him on the list, IMO.

Fair enough if it’s the women’s team, we are talking men’s

It'll be a sitewide scripted rule that automatically replaces all instances referring to the football club by "Adelaide" with "Kuwarna", set to last until the end of the week

You're probably right... which doesn't make it any less ****ing stupid!
