I'd have:

1. Lalor
2. Draper.
3. Smith
4. Langford
5. FOS
1. Lalor
2. smith
3. FOS

Then finding it hard to split Draper and Langford , I think Drapers poor ball use and composure is more of a concern than langfords lack of speed . Think both have enough weapons to succeed though

I’ve got them so even , I’ll be almost equally happy with any of those 5

I’d also personally have Travaglia in that mix to make it 6 but club won’t be taking him

In most circumstances it’s a clear disadvantage to not spend the cap. And while there are carry forward rules, they are quite limited.

The biggest issue is we are talking about rejigging after the year wrapped up. Even then, our 2024 cap would have been largely locked away from 2023.

My view is they would be trying to get as close to 100% each year with a small amount for contingencies - I just don’t think we have much wriggle room at all, not even to squeeze out a Burgess.

There was a poster on our board who as part of their employment dealt with the mechanics of the salary cap - can’t remember the name. Would be interesting to hear what actually goes on in clubland (including what tweaks they can do during the year to re-allocate) rather than hypothesising!

Yeah, common sense says that clubs utilise the entire cap, and if they have a young list, then they're looking to front load contracts so they have flexibility later.

The exact kind of flexibility that allowed us to make the kinds of offers that won us three mature players this off season.

Likely he makes it past pick 1?

I really don’t know as everyone seems to be playing their cards close to their chests.

FWIW Cal Twomey seems to think he’s not locked in yet and I’m guessing Adelaide feel the same way.

do you think a trade with north will happen?

I don’t know, but it makes the most sense for them.

They’ve knocked other approaches back from Richmond and St Kilda (the latter because they didn’t want to slide back to 8), so if it’s a small slide back of just two picks and they secure a F2(?), then it’s ideal.

It does seem like semantics though in justifying Tauru at 4 instead of 2.

For us yes
That's a fair call. To me more than anything else we simply need a midfield gun. We have enough solid midfield contributors now to build around the strengths of whoever we draft.

If all other things are equal, then sure, look to our other needs such as speed, strength, explosiveness. But IMO there's just enough gap in talent between FOS and Draper that I'd be taking FOS even if Draper slightly suits our needs more.

If they want Tauru, even though they don’t rate him #2, they should get the best deal they can for 2. Otherwise they’re just burning the excess value of the pick.

The pick trade also need to guarantee they can get Tauru, North probably think Melbourne will select him at pick 5 given May is close to retirement.

You interviewed with Lalor again today.
