List Mgmt. 2024 AFL Draft

The perceived strength of this draft and the actual strength may be completely different- have another look in 5 years.

Well yes that's 100% correct.

But modified DeLoreans have been out of stock for decades now so Clubs can only go on what they have in front of them. And the combined wisdom of all 18 Clubs is that this was a good draft squad with 71 players selected - the most since 2018.

And, as I said the entry of the Tasmanian Devils team in the 2028 season will not only severely impact the integrity of coming drafts before then but will also require teams to sign up talent on long term contracts in coming years to stop them being poached by the Devils (as well as using that talent to negotiate for required players while high draft picks are quarantined for the Devils use). This means that getting the very best outcome from this draft was essential for maintaining list strength over the next 5 years.

But I agree- hindsight, as always, will be the best measure of success.

So surely we invite R.Burgoyne, L.Montgomery, Dennis, McLennan and Watkins to train on. Who are the best mature tall backs we could ask also?

Before anyone says Grainger-Barras, I don’t think he nominated for the draft so I am not even sure he is eligible.
As a delisted player he (Grainger-Barras) didn't need to nominate, he can be taken in the pre-season supplemental period by a club of his choice. Narkle took this option with the promise from Freo that they would take him in the pre-season period.

Port promised Watkins a chance to try out for a pre-season spot. Hopefully the chance is also open to the others you mentioned. Seems a good way to build a SANFL side and to get the mosy worthy player on the rookie list.

Interesting draft. We pick up players rated 13, 17 and 25 on my list so I should be happy.
I like Berry as a play but I think we missed the chance to get a big body mid. I had Bo Allan at 3.
It could be worse as I only had FOS at 12.
Berry is a mid who can kick goals. I hate how everyone 180 and under is a small forward. A lot of Toby Greene about him in the way he moves but I don't think he has the speed and strength and the C U n t. Needed to get better at distributing an accurate handball when being tackled.
Spoke to another clubs recruiter today and he thought Port did very well and rates all of our picks.
Whitlock is going to be handy. Should work well with our forward line mix. Better than Lord with less athleticism. Whitlock should fill out to be a bigger body. Base value Jarryd Allen ceiling Jeremy hogan.
Moraes has a lot going for him. Jaxon Mead level but if he can sharpen his solid game by improving his turn of speed and/or improving his craft inside he could be good.
Tom has some trick and really knows how to get the ball. Needs to improve his Monday to Friday. If he can do that he could be the bargain.

The smaller the player the more talent required to make a successful AFL career.
You can’t be 174cm and meh.
I’d say good for the Port Magpies but I’d doubt he’d see AFL action.
And you could just as well select the next vanilla mid or a project tall that we delist every 5 minutes.

Credit to the list management and recruiting team. Turned a pretty ordinary situation into a good haul of young talent.
I think we got lucky with our second pick that Whitlock was still there.
If he’d gone earlier as expected it might not have looked as good.
Pity we missed out on Clarke,I reckon he’s going to be more than handy.

That Whitlock pick will define our main draft no question. The other 2 look like they both should play 100+ games. Whitlock could become a star or bust.

Well I agree with you about the vanilla types we tend to target.
That’s why I’d prefer bigger bodied types that we lack when the game gets tough come finals.
Best of luck to Benny but seriously there’s a reason nobody wanted him.
He at worst will improve the magpies so it’s not a total loss.

Nobody wanted Houston in his draft year either it's not an exact science.

If you were drawing up our list from scratch I think a KPD and big inside mid would replace two of our smaller forwards.

That’s in the margin of error really.
Big mids are always welcome but seriously if you can't get it done with Wines, Drew & JHF at the coalface supporting Butters and Rozee it ain't the personnel.

I'm the reverse

Moraes has the highest ceiling of the 3. Was a top 10 contender this time last year. Backed it up with a good year although not as strong as Smith, Langford, Smilie etc. I think he's got a lot of traits similar to Rozee. His real development will come through once there's a head coach change that would allow us to lower the eyes. Yeah he's got an interesting technique but I'd say it's normally good too.

Berry is a good small forward, I think he'll consistently kick 30 goals a year. I still stick to my point that he isn't a need but don't question the quality of the player.

Whitlock is a bit meh for me, I ultimately think we'll stuff up his development (or any tall's) anyways by swinging him forward and back. Consistent with what we've done for Lord and now Walsh.

Unfortunately, when players come into the AFL with questionable disposal skills it normally sticks with them throughout their careers. Boak’s been in the system for nearly two decades & he still hit numerous Swans players on the chest in the PF, & this has been a recurring pattern throughout the majority of his career.

Barrett got speed in spades, the x-factor and strengths to break away. Port have intentionally hidden him away in midfield which imo is an option for him like what Pickett does. Not sure why there's some dislike towards this kid but some of his ground ball work and his tackling pressure (averages over 6 tackles a game) is something that our forward line could do with. Would say if his development goes as planned he could well replace Rioli

I am not sure his disposal skills (to my eyes) are questionable. I think it changes depending on the position he plays. I like him as a half forward or winger and when he has space he really used his speed to effect and gives himself time to make the right decision.

Its when he's in the centre, like he was for Eastern Ranges, where his kicking was quite poor. But at Vic Metro level he played multiple positions, including HB and HF, and there it was a totally different prospect. If he goes into the centre bounce, he'll be using his handball more which is really good at in traffic.

Boak was an average kick at best regardless of where he played

There’s going to be a long line to replace Rioli.

It seems to be a ploy at getting Doug. FWIW, I think he has potential as well, so it isn't like we're picking up a complete spud, he could do well.

Maybe being Dougies brother does help.

Having him at Port prevents Tasmania picking him up and effectively using him as bait to get Dougie to sign up.

That said he does go OK and he's capable of making a name for himself. I'm sure he's going work his arse off to avoid being known as Dougies brother.
