At this stage I highly doubt Barrett’s a threat to go before 40. The question is going to be if he’s draftable.

There’s sub 178cm guys who light up their draft year and still don’t get drafted / get drafted to late, much less guys who aren’t even making their state side.


Corey durdin was fairly dominant pre-draft (dominant as an underager and played seniors if I can remember in his draft year) and went pick 37 as one example.

We'll 100% pick him up as CatB at a minimum.

I kept a pretty close eye on Louie Montgomery today vs Vic Metro today and he really doesn't appear to have an AFL future. Did not show any speed, does not get his hands dirty and just floated up and down the ground out of position on most occasions.
Rookie chance at best on this outing which would only be based on his surname.

• Walsh makes things look more difficult than they need to be.

It doesn’t take much imagination to see the brothers running around for Carlton for the next 10 plus years.

It will be interesting to see where they fit into the draft.

Powerful midfielder/forward Cooper Hynes used his strength to bust through stoppages and finished with 19 disposals, while Harry Charleson, the brother of Port Adelaide's Lachie, had 23 touches.
Forward Jacob Newton was also lively with 3.2 from 13 disposals for SA to show his wares in front of recruiters, while Louie Montgomery, who is eligible to Port Adelaide under father-son rules where his dad Brett played, had 15 touches.

Father-son prospect stars as SA falls to Vic Country

Inaccuracy in front of goal proved pivotal as South Australia succumbed to Victoria Country by eight points in Game 2 of its 2024 Marsh AFL U18 National Championships campaign.
Having conjured a gutsy come-from-behind victory against the Allies in Game 1, the Croweaters appeared set to repeat the dose when they booted the final four goals of the match in the fourth quarter.
After snatching the lead midway through the third term despite trailing at the opening two changes, Tony Bamford’s charges undid their hard work leading into three-quarter time when they booted a match-defining three behinds as their rivals kicked three goals.
It left the visitors with too much work to do in the final term, when they fell behind by as much as 27 points early in the last stanza.
But the South Aussies refused to give in as crafty forward Evan Bradley snapped truly, before Tyler Welsh nailed two of his four majors for the match either side of a Ned Bowman set shot to give the Croweaters an unlikely sniff of victory with five minutes to play.
However, the Country boys managed to steady as they chalked up a win in their first outing of the Carnival, leaving SA with a 1-1 win-loss record after two starts.
SA – which had 10 more inside 50 entries despite having 66 fewer disposals – was led strongly in the midfield by Ben Camporeale (27 disposals, five clearances) and Sid Draper (26 disposals, four clearances).
They received great service from ruck inclusion Alex Dodson, who impressed in his first SA U18 outing with 19 disposals, five marks, three clearances and 20 hit outs as he moved around the ground with ease.
Angus Clarke (19 disposals, six marks) and Tate Delmenico (13 disposals, five marks) were composed under pressure in defence while in attack, powerfully-built Jacob Newton was a constant threat at the feet of Welsh as he booted three goals to go with 13 disposals and six marks.
Crows father-son Welsh kicked 4.2 from his seven kicks and five marks while exciting bottom-age prospect Dyson Sharp was again solid with 17 disposals and eight clearances.
The Croweaters will now return home to host Western Australia (Sunday June 16) and Victoria Metro (Sunday June 30) at Alberton Oval.

It doesn’t take much imagination to see the brothers running around for Carlton for the next 10 plus years.

It will be interesting to see where they fit into the draft.

After Carlton pick them up for 12 fifth round picks the AFL will change the rule to force clubs to use first round picks.

Probably has something to do with the lack of strong sa rucks the last decade (I mean who would be our options for soo rucks if we were picking tomorrow? Draper … and then …?

And the fact rucks take a while to develop and non-Sa born players leave the crows quickly.

I’m adding 1+1 and thinking they’ve been hesitant to draft non-sa rucks and they haven’t seen too many Sa rucks they’ve liked.

They could almost work a worthwhile trade for pick 1 from North.

Gold Coast get pick one ( Smillie) plus their Academy players make out like bandits.

North get Ollie and maybe 3 very good picks left over ( I don't think they see young mids as a need so Smillie is neither here nor there.)


Port get a worthwhile pick for Ollie.

I think Norths would want something in the top five, plus extras for pick one.

They did trade pick 1 and JHF for pick 2, 3, a future 1st, plus extras. How much of that was for JHF and how much for pick 1?

SA has never been a production line of genuinely tall rucks and KPPs. We could kill you with rovers though.

Can’t speak to the breeding practices of the colonial era but SA does seem to struggle to produce talls.

Wonder if it’s a development issue?

This year's Draft is basically a non-event for Port.
A few F/S with mid/late picks and that's all folks!
Who even knows if those guys are top notch anyway.

As of right now none of our f/s picks are flourishing.

I said they were all mid - draft to rookie chances at the start of the year and with all of them not really firing in their draft years they’re looking like rookie pickups.

We’ve got a 2nd and 3rd rounder, and we have needs to fill. Definitely need to go after some talent with those picks.

We need Half Forwards who can kick desperately and we don't have much midfield back up coming through.
