AFLW 2024 AFLW season - Geelong & the greater league...

How is that not HTB? Feel like practically everyone has been against us and they've probably been there, but nothing the other way.

Freo are just grabbing the ball and not even trying to get rid of it knowing they won't be pinged.

There was 3 quick holding the ball calls early in the second quarter

Not much since then has gone our way in terms of 50/50 calls

There is no chance we make finals from this position now right?

I had ruled that out once McDonald was done for the season

No recognised ruck, our best forward & most consistent mid missing, was always going to make it an uphill battle on the run home

Add in that Pres is clearly playing under duress, it's not going to be our season

Need to turn our focus to next season and use our remaining games to get a look at the next gen

We have had a terrible season, really disheartening.

We've generated chances early in games but have wasted myriad opportunities and then let the opposition back into games with some leaky centre square work and a very shakey defense.

Obviously we're missing Amy McDonald and Chloe Scheer, but something is very wrong.

We'd be completely shite if it weren't for Aishling Moloney.

Will basically need to win every game from here on in and hope on other results - but considering we have to play Adelaide and Brisbane on the run home, that's nigh on impossible, even if both games are down here (not that KP is a fortress for us - 0-3 there this season).

Agree, but not sure this coaching group (or whoever puts the list together) are the right ones to get us there.

With both Bragg and O'Rourke spending the last 20 minutes plus on the bench, this would be the 2nd game in a row where we were 2 rotations down for a fair chunk of the 2nd half.

Darby, Featherston & Bragg have stayed to sign a few autographs, but otherwise the players had a quick huddle near the race, threw the signed footballs into the crowd and straight to the rooms

Even with losses earlier this season, they'd stay out for a bit, chat with fans and sign autographs but not tonight

It's the most sombre I've seen the group after a loss - it'll be interesting to see how they respond come Sunday, because this is definitely a lot different post match reaction to what we've seen previously

Even just before leaving, Bowen was chatting with Krock and Plummer is on the sidelines trying to get her to hurry up - maybe a message from Dan that he wanted everyone in the rooms for a post match address

There was definitely some strange tactical decisions tonight, and moves that probably should have been made earlier - but realistically execution was our biggest killer tonight; should have had 2 or 3 goals on the board in the first quarter and easily 5 or 6 by halftime to have killed the game

There's 4 rucks in the league averaging over 30 hitouts per game - Strom is one of them

Darby, Bragg & Featherston (if used in there) need to be crashing into her and just making it hard for her at every opportunity

We're not going to win the hitouts tonight, but we need to not let them have an easy time of it

Interesting that there's been 4 rucks averaging over 30 hitouts a game - and we're averaging less than 20 a game as a side.
The most hitouts we've had in a game has been 20 twice - tonight and in Round 1 vs Melbourne. The lowest was 14 on Thursday against Hawthorn.

It might be a bonus for us since Sydney's number 1 ruck is out with a foot injury for the rest of the year. We might look semi-respectable in the middle on Sunday.

O'Rourke clearly hampered all match by that shoulder and I said it during the match, but thinking the only reason we saw her during the 2nd & 3rd quarters was to assist with player management ahead of yet another 5-day break

Hopefully it's not a serious shoulder injury, but not sure we see her on Sunday

We've struggled to take a trick this season

The commentators on Foxtel mentioned that they think with so many players who are relatively new to the side playing tonight (ie. Kennedy, Kenny, Featherston, O'Rourke, Bragg and Thorne) that we lacked the cohesiveness we would normally have if the players were more familiar with each other.

Makes you wonder then why we never allowed some of the girls to play together more in the VFLW to build up that cohesiveness. I think last year we had a lot more AFLW listed players playing in the VFLW earlier in the season, and then in the last month or so pulled them out to rest them up for the AFLW, which is why the VFLW side crashed out of the top six, but at least it gave the girls a better idea how each other plays. I think we even had Chloe Scheer play a few VFLW games last year. I think this year we were lucky to have half a dozen AFLW listed players play any one week at VFLW level.

I know that when Sydney played a few games against VFLW sides earlier in the season, their team was stacked with AFLW listed players. Pretty sure Hawthorn did the same as well when they flogged us by 16 goals early in the season too.

Lowther, like Scott, seems to have a good, strong connection with the playing group, so not sure I'd be looking at moving him on

But maybe it's having a look at the assistant coaches and if we've got the right mix there

Thinking of someone like Rohan as an assistant - obviously when the two seasons were completely separate it allowed the time to focus on his AFL career, and then turn to the AFLW over summer. With the AFLW now starting in August, pre-season starting in June, how much focus could he give to his assistant coaching role compared with his playing career?

There's always tweaks to be had, but not sure it's always the head coach who needs to make way in the first place
