How much? 900k for 6 years? What about the coming up players, and the salary cap? I'd be happy to pay him well and give him a leadership position, but I wonder how others feel.

So he has better stats than Jake Lever. If you had to go out and get 25yo Jake Lever what sort of money would he cost? A pick in the first round in a weak draft will maybe get us a better player but we won't know for 4 years. We will probably have to give up a future second round pick for Butts who is a B to C grade unidimensional back and a massive down grade.

This idea that letting Battle go is a positive is naive IMO. You pay him what the market is willing to pay minus the 10% or what ever players usually accept to stay put.

Our backline and rebound is the best line. In the next couple of years we are going to lose Webster and probably Paton as depth. We are looking at off loading Howard and Battle. All of a sudden that backline looks a whole lot worse and then awe also have guys like Hill coming towards the end. Making holes in the list means focus and capital have to go back to patching instead of improving depth and quality.

The dream.:
Another team goes totally crazy and pays a heap for Battle , we get first round compo, and amazingly Dustin Martin's 18YO clone is there in the draft waiting for us to pick him.

The reality :
We fall short of band 1 compo, we end up with some guy who will have a career like Farren Ray.
He's ok, but we trade him for a cold pizza after 3 years because he's not Dustin Martin.

The kid also had 9 clearances 18 contested possessions with a de% of 78, He is exactly the type of player we need. The next iteration of players seems to be moving from who will be the next Bont or Cripps to who is the next Butters or Serong.
I like Draper very much a Mr Consistent type guaranteed 200 game player but can he be that match winner we need?
Big fan of Lombard he is tank with speed, if we somehow perhaps perchance get another pick (cough Battle cough) I wouldn't mind placing a bid. You never know.

When our season is officially dead and buried after tonight. It just needs to be games into kids.

If we have any hope of landing smith. We need to finish 15-16th

I agree. He’s a good talent 18 contested possessions is all good at this level but it’s the next step up. Would have to put on significant size. Traits that translate to afl footy. Drapers xfactor is his burst from stoppage and gut running he sort of reminds me of Horne Francis in the way he can get from inside to out I like Jagga just more questions on him then the other 3. Need to see him take the game forward a touch.

And a bit of Butters IMO, Walsh seemed to get the ball and go a bit more than Jagga. Small mids are back in fashion again with Merrett, Butters, Neale, Gulden, Parish types all starring. For a while footy fetishised 6 foot plus mids.

There is something about Jagga that just looks like he will be a gun. Kids that get lots of the ball are usually really confident and driven to succeed. That's a massive head start. Possessions aren't everything but they are rarely a bad thing.
I’d say it’s more midfielders that take the ball forward and or explode from inside to out. Not really Darcy parish. Warner, butters, rozee, jhf, LDU, will day, rankine, even daicos this season all use there pace to take the ball forward from in to out. Jagga is a talent and probably has it in his arsenal but it’s something I’m sure they’d love to see more.

Jagga is small but all fast twitch muscling. I'd say he's the strongest candidate for that type of progression and at worst is a proven ball winner and high accumulator.
Being slight he'll have to play more outside to begin with so he'll develop that side of his game.

This is Davo-27 a draft expert assessment of Jagga Smith last state game -

Here's an example of no hurt factor, 32 poss, 57m gained, 5 score involvements, Levi Ashcroft 24 disposal 362m gained 8 score involvements and 2 goals, but you only heard about smiths 32 touches.... this was why the Hawks were open to trading Tom Mitchell, he struggled with meters gained too... good on paper with disposal numbers, but it gets worse once you look at what he does with it, I wish I had his season average on meters gained and score involvements to understand his ceiling

I watched most of the game & saying a kid has no hurt factor based on metres gained just shows how these armchair experts should probably stick to SuperCoach.

Jagga absolutely cut up the Allies with his ability to get the ball to players in the clear… Ashcroft being a beneficiary of this numerous times. His vision & ability to find space is elite. I’d understand if he was a plodder but his work rate to get from contest to contest at pace makes the comparison with Mitchell absolutely laughable.

Went with a mate to watch his youngest have a kick this morning.

One of the dads of a kid in his side is involved with Vic Country - he was saying we are all over Sam Lalor.

Says Dalrymple Sos and Gubby have spoken with the family and Sam abit. But absolutely love what he brings and the player he is.

This guy seemed to think he was a Dusty type of player. Explosive. Powerful. Front of stoppage clearances and goals.

Think that's a bit unfair. We need someone to get it out to our good users on the outside anyway. If he's available he looks good. I think Smilie, O'Sullivan, Draper and Trainor will all go top 4 and then he's the next best. Lalor is the only one you'd probably hope has a really strong end to the season and pushes ahead of guys like Moraes and Jagga.

Lalor is much more of the type we need. He's more a centre square bull. He sounds like he did a bit of a Bont with his school where he came back and kicked 7 goals. Hopefully he pushes up and makes us look at him because that's exactly what we are missing. There are a few good later options too.Harvey Langford looks good.

That's pretty funny because I was just thinking he's the right type. He's really the piece that we are missing as a type.

A backend top 10 pick - who has had some injury issues this year preventing him from getting on the park.

If the Saints take him 4-6 area. Sounds like a Dalrymple type of choice.

The guy from True Footy (a mad Eagles supporter) has them taking Trainor at their pick, leaving Jagga to us

He is a bit clueless but as an Eagles supporter he'd probably know more than us about who Eagles might take

That much for a 3rd tall defender - nah.

If we are gonna waste money I'd rather we add an extra $300k per year get LDU.

Could rise naturally anyway. Went back and showed what he could do for his school. Had comparisons to Dusty early on. I think we probably need someone a bit more dominant inside after the Friday game. Not many others are looking on track for the high end of the draft. Most seem to sit late first or second round.

Great to hear I didnt want to go to early on my love for Lalor, but he is everything you'd want in a midfielder. He has had an injury interrupted start to the year but he has all the tools we desparately need. He is a bull in the middle who can burst from stoppages and at 187cms he is good over head. The RMC summary liken him to playing a bit like Dusty Martin.

Yeah I love what lalor brings. Does anyone know why he didn't play vic country's first game? A decent size mid compared to most of this years top end, exceptionally strong overhead for a midfielder, powerfully built and ready to go. Tackles hard, skills look good for an inside leaning type mid, and he seems to have a little bit of breakaway speed. Kind of reminds me of Josh Dunkley the way he plays.

He's been injured. Foot and quad. I don't love injury restricted juniors. They tend to get more fragile with more exposure not less but he's a good prospect if he can string some footy together he'd be right in the frame.

Jesus just looked up Jonty Faull. His goal tally looks insane. Averages 5 goals a game after nine month layoff. He's not overly tall but he can kick a ball.

Interesting.

Was just a random to me, but people always love the little tidbits that come out through conversation.

So thought it was worthy to put here.

This could have implications at seasons end with the draft order.

Well IF North can replicate something like that first half form for the rest of the year they will win a number of games and move up from last place. Quite likely to go past WC and Tigers. Maybe even past us.

IF they keep playing like that it may also help them to attract a few established players. They certainly have young talent right through the team. And their bodies are starting to catch up with that talent.

Xerri is looking more and more like that we should have upped our offer.

I’m not going to consider them moving past us.

I was more referencing that north at 2 has to mean TRAINOR is a genuine possibility.

Which guarantees Smith Osullivan or Draper is left at pick 5
